Revenge on the Indian Call Centers
- BigA replies to shloime| 4 repliesYou are partly right. The pop up comes from an ad on a web page. Delivered by Javascript. However sometimes people cannot
Many times they have to do a hard shutdown of the computer, restart after disconnecting from the internet and then clear out the cache, cookies, and history. Using an ad blocker would have stopped that from even happening.Quote:just close the window or the app and they’re gone. - Robert replies to Mrs. John Sharpe| 1 replyProbably the best way to address the Car Warranty scammers is when they say your car warrantee is expiring, press ONE to speak to someone, I just Press ONE. And when they ask for my vehicle, I just tell them that They Called ME-so tell Me what it is. Then they hang up.
I have even tried to tell them that I had to sell my car since I have Glaucoma and can long longer drive. They say I will be taken off the list-and a month goes by and we start again. - Tobehelpful replies to RobertAn even better way is to get the actual name of the company that's calling and then put thd info that they're illegally telemarketing on their YELP and BBB pages. This is very effective for those of us who go after them in court. Check out the BBB for "Matrix Warranty Solutions". It's a prime example on how it's done

Ad blockers definitely help. However, some of the nastier ads I've experienced involved a redirect from a legitimate web page to a page that would either try to spread malware or display a message that a call to a toll-free number (presumably answered by someone at a Southeast Asian call center) would supposedly resolve the issue while using synthesized speech to loudly speak the displayed message on a constant loop until the user either killed the browser process or did a hard reboot. These almost sounded like browser or DNS exploits of some sort, but I'm not 100% sure - especially after malware scans found no infections. I'm just glad they seemed to disappear after I tweaked my network settings and installed an ad blocker. *knocks on wood* - BigA replies to OfficeFlunkyI have been using an ad blocker for years and have never, ever had one of those pop ups. I haven't run across and redirects either. Maybe one of the computer nerds that hang out around here could address that? :)
- Alfred E. Neuman replies to Mrs. John SharpeI always tell them that they called my land line, and I have a roommate (I don't), so I need to know whom they were trying to call. This is to determine if they have my name. Half the time they don't. An honest business person at least knows the name of the person he/she is trying to call!
- Bilbo replies to NoorInNJCan backfire, I told a South-Asian scammer off once, giving instructions of what he could do to his mother, and they launched a denial of service against me with like two dozen calls in a two hour period. I had to call Verizon technical support to make it stop. They need to identify the CEOs of these scam operations, lure them to the States, and then put them in jail for lengthy periods with cellmates who answer to "Bubba."

- SilentOneI like to play with them; perhaps I should get better at it. At any rate, they don't like me at all, usually hanging up when i answer. They probably think I'm from an insane asylum or something.

Probably. Unless it was an unblocked script running on that webpage. In that case, uBlock or NoScript web browser extensions could have stopped it.
