Getting more calls after signing up on the Do Not Call List

Several credit card firms have had data breaches in the last few years.  The data compromised was more than just credit card numbers.  It included names, dates of birth, social security numbers, addresses, and phone numbers.  If your data was stolen you got a new credit card number, but you didn't change your date of birth or other personal information.  The scammers may now have access to that information.

Yesterday, my father complained of telemarketers, so I looked up the DNC list and added his number.  I figured since I was at it, I'd add mine as well.  Before today, I'd usually get 1-5 cold calls a month.  Not horrible.  Since yesterday, I've had 4 calls.  It has only been 15 hours!

So here I am looking for validation of my hypothesis:  adding my number has caused more calls to come to my phone.  I am agreeing with the original poster too.  They are likely related.

Honest companies DO follow the DNC list.  Scammers do not - they are thieves so would you expect them to follow the law?

You can say it isn't possible, but the fact is it DOES happen. We used to get literally hundreds of calls a month, sometimes as many as 20 a day even though we were on the DO Not Call list. We moved last year, and for about 9 months we only received maybe 3 or 45 sales calls in that entire time. It was great! Then one day I remembered that I hadn't yet registered our new number on the DO Not Call list. Well the old saying that if it ain't broke don't fix it really applies here - we are now getting multiple calls daily...so don't tell me they aren't getting a hold of the list and using it as a source, they absolutely are!

    Ummm, I meant 3 or 4, not 45! Oops.

You know,  I am pretty sure this is the part of the movie I walked in on.  Grab a beer?  Pray for Strength?

We have had an unlisted/unpublished phone number for 35 years.  We NEVER got telemarketer calls until we bought a new car.  Bought the car and financed through Capitol One.  Within 30 days we were receiving at least 3 telemarketer calls a day.  They have ruined the use of our land line.  I think Capitol One sold our phone number and always will.  We never do business with them, all for a 0.9% loan on a car.  BTW, have been on the DNC list since it started, received no calls after going on DNC.  Just after doing business with Capitol One.  Now just keep phone connected to fax so they can talk to the machine and not us.

Never fails to amaze me on how quick people are to blame the DNC list and don't stop to think where ELSE they've given out their number.

HEY-I think I just made this whole thread redundant with one sentence!

When  you apply for jobs online, some sites require you to allowed to be contacted by third parties for special offers.  Also, if you enter drawings, and provide a phone number, guess what...?  No one wants to take responsibility for their actions, and  are quick to blame other, because they weren't paying attention.

I've noticed that the few telemarketing calls I get often come in clusters.  About 6 months ago I got 4 pests in 3 weeks, a record high for me.  I haven't gotten one since then.  The people who notice an increase after signing up for the DNC list may be catching a random cluster of calls.
