Received call with my own name and number in caller ID!

We also have had this type of thing happen. All I did was open the line and set the receiver down. They don' have any idea what is going on. They also try to hang on by saying "is anybody there"? If you don't recognize the number just hang up.

We received 3 calls from them yesterday using our name & phone number. They said they were microsoft and I needed to change my IP address because the crooks were already using my IP address to scam people. What a bunch of crap. My husband held the line until some India speaking person came on the line. He told that guy not to ever call us again and we haven't heard from them today at all.  It just makes me furious that they can use my phone number and then try to scam us on top of that!

To be clear, they are not using your phone number, only displaying it in your caller ID.  The idea is you get curious and then pickup a call you should have blocked.

Now that you have interacted with them, you can expect more calls - some with your number and some with other spoofed numbers. These are crooks and listen to your actions (answering calls from suspicious numbers) not your requests to stop calling.

SAME THING happened to us 3 times today so far. Caller has a foreign accent saying they are calling from Microsoft. Yeah right. We are on the DNC lists (Fed and state), not that it makes any difference.

Do you know why it makes no difference? Because scammers neither know nor care that you're on the DNC list.

Called the FTC, at 877-382-4357, www.consumer.ftc.gov, spoke with a rep., about two calls I have received at 5:07pm, & 12:15pm, on Wednesday, 5/22/19.   Both calls had my full name & home telephone number in the caller ID, however, no message from the 12:15pm call, but the 5:07pm caller, was what I believed to be a male prompt, I could be mistaken, it could've been a live male speaking.  He stated that I should Press 1 to get further information about suspicious activity on my social security account, etc.  I don't answer calls I am not familiar with.  However, it was unnerving to see my full name & telephone # in my caller ID!   I did speak with the rep at the FTC, who directed me to contact the credit reporting bureaus, my medical provider, social security, banks, etc.  When I receive unwanted calls, I, *57, to have them traced, or I do report them to the "DO NOT CALL REGISTRY, at 1-800-382-1222(follow the prompts to report complaints and/or register your number with this agency)."   FCC, 888-225-5322, www.fcc.gov, I have written to them, the FCC, FTC, and the local Attorney General's office with these unwanted numbers & any messages mentioned.  Today, I received approximately, five(5)unwanted calls.  Your expedient response & attention in this matter will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Just so you know, most of those "Social Security Administration" scam calls are made from computers using VOIP apps in India. Most numbers that ask you to press 1 are spoofed, but not all.

Mike, just a heads up, might be better to say 'overseas' instead of singling out just one country. India may do a lot of scam calling, but it's by no means the only perpetrator of such calls-nor of scams in general.

CD has a point. It used be India or Pakistan and that seems to have expanded.

Well to be fair, I did say "most of those "Social Security Administration" scam calls".

I'll admit I missed the 'most' bit but to merely call out India...look at the intelligence of some of the posters here. They would see your post and probably miss what I did and think that India is the only one. Plus, I've seen scammers elsewhere and India isn't the biggest one named-it's Africa (Ghana, South Africa and Nigeria), not India.

I do see the intelligence of many posters here, but I am not going to alter my way of commenting to accommodate  a few who can't comprehend what I am saying, by 'tippy-toeing' and just generalize with simpleton statements. I am confident the majority can comprehend what I say without further interpretation, if they just read all of it.

I don't even know how this became an issue worth debating over, but for the sake of the debate, I am talking about the Social Security Administration scam specifically and I will maintain that India has the majority of reports that the scams originate from that country.
Scams of all types are world wide and no country can be 'finger pointed' as the sole perpetrators of scams in general, but there are some well known countries for specific scam types...Jamaica is well known for Travel and Lottery scams, Africa is well known for " Nigerian Prince/King will give you $1 million for your help" email scams and India/Pakistan is well known for Tech Support and SSA scams.
