There is an attorney in Florida and Michigan that can help,   I had a major issue with a collector in VA about 2-3 years ago, and he successfully got them to stop harassing me,   He does not charge at all, and if he wins in court, he will actually pay you $1000.  Which is the maximum allowed under the Fair Debt Collections Act.   I got his number from this website,  I don't have the documentation anymore, but his name is Mike something,  Very good attorney to work with.  He is licensed in both Florida and Michigan.

An interesting solution would have the courts require them pay off the outstanding balances for all accounts they are collecting. If they could do that, then why not have an independent observer in the office when they make the calls. That salary would be paid by them also. This is getting much more creative and is really protecting the citizens of the country.

You cannot deduct a fine from your taxes.  The government does not help you pay your fines.

You really should try to find the name of the person. Mike something is very hard to find and if he is as good an attorney as you say he is someone here may need his services...How can they get him if this is all the information that you have?

Telephone companies get paid for every call, scam or not. They also get to charge victims a nice monthly fee for call display (which the scammers will spoof anyway). Very profitable for the telco. Why would they want this to stop?

Perhaps, if the penalty were permanent disconnection of telephone service (instead of a piddly fine), the abuse would stop.

Why don't you just pay your bills or If you can't pay them which I understand for whatever reasons, I do, do something about it. File bankruptcy or call the people you owe money too and tell them you can't pay. I don't get the fact that grown men and women hiding from a debt collectors calls. Just answer the phone tell them who you are and tell them you wont be paying anything and you want calls ceased. Most legit debt collectors will say okay and remove your number. They would rather move on to talk with someone who actually wants to clear their name of their debts. It is ridiculous how this company behaved but at the same time these people have a right to get their money back right? You are allowing the harassing calls by being too scared to just answer the phone. If your that scared just say it isn't you and they have the wrong # and that should stop the calls for a bit but at some point a new agency will get your debt and they'll start calling all over again.

What if the person, got divorced, furlough at your job,  and parents and brother got gravely ill with cancer, stroke, and heart attack, not to mention you have children to take care of,  and one credit card that cant be paid but hope in the future will not negotiate and you are trying hard to negotiate what you can pay and they keep adding up the interest and won't take a lower amount that you want to pay until you can get back on your feet, they won' take a small monthly payment as good faith until you can pay more,,   and  bill collector looks up phone number of your same last name and calls sick family to find where you are...Things happen sometimes beyond our control, and we can try to pay bills,  but it is not always straight forward as you think!
