If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
    1.    The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
    2.    Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
    3.    File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
    4.    File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
    5.    File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

    Scam alert: Bogus debt collectors
    By Leslie McFadden • Bankrate.com
    Monday, Aug. 3
    Posted 2 p.m.
Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry.
This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.
The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately.
What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references.
"The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.
Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology.
    The BBB offers these tips:
    •    Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.
    •    Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.
    •    File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    •    File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you.

I received a call for this person saying his name was Mark, and he was from some Crime Prevention Company, and that this was a serious matter. I could not understand what he was saying, because his asian, or indian accent was so thick.. But it was not for me, Mark wanted me to give this message to a friend of mine, evidently they put my name down as a reference. When my friend and I called this number, no one answered. Until we dial *67!!( number does'nt show up) then we were told that my friend was being taken to court by a Pay Day Cash Company.

These folks can sound convincing so there are many that fall for this especially if they are working with legitimate creditors to resolve unpaid debt. Any debt collector will be able to provide details about the unpaid dept and provide documentation for it; these people will not. DO NOT provide payment information over the phone. If its too late, notify your bank and look for charges from a third party billing company. This particular group will run charges through "Business Impact Marketing".  Hope this is helpful!

The gentleman that called for me on my fiance number was Jason Lee, please an indian with a name like that? think about that.

So what do we do? they have all our personal information and that scares me.....

I get a call from these idiots every week. They give me some american-sounding name, with a thick middle -eastern accent.  I usually let them say their mumbo jumbo foreign jibberish, then they threaten me with a lawsuit or that they will drag me out of my work, kicking and screaming. After that, I ask them if anyone is actually stupid enough to pay them, and then they go crazy: cuss me out, threaten me more, or tell me how bad americans are. Then they hang up on me. It kinda makes my day. I'm not too worried about my info; the bank acoount number they have is no longer in use. My credit has been down the drain in the last two years, so they can't get a loan on my social, either.

    Confused
I just received a call for these people. He left me two voice mails on my work mailbox one last week one the other day. I really couldn't understand him and I didn't take it serious. By today I picked up and he tells me i took a $300 payday loan out in June and they tried talking the money July 12th and I had no funds. He said this was a serious matter, talked about fraud, jail time, theft. I keep asking questions because I was confused because he knew all my information, social security number yet I didn't know what payday loan this man was talking about. I asked him for the number of the company he said it was US Cash Advance.I never heard of them he said they had over 100 different company under them but couldn't tell me the name of the company. I call the number he gives me because I think Im calling the company yet its the Crime Prevention people again. he called me from 772-324-7138...company name number was 321-348-2058 (which turned to be them again) I told him I would look at my bank statement and call the company and get back to him an he threaten jail time some more insisted i settle out of court and just deal with it. SMH can't believe they have my information.

Again a call from the same people.

From the number +052593371 this time instead of 321 348 2058

And again he said well then they will take me to court etc. So i then freaked out and told the idiot that i went online i found this website and told them to stop their [***] and phoning me and that i was tracing the call, and that it was a scam and if they ever called or used my information ever and where they got it from really got me even more mad, as that is personal information. He then said and i can not believe turned around  and said to me well i am sorry you feel this is a scam, but its not and you will be sued etc, and then i said stop wasting my time my name is clear so take me to court or f right off. And he then said well thank you for your time have a good day... ugh have you ever.

It worries me so much that they have all my information, where do they get it from?? And they sound so convincing...

    Someone explain how this happens????

Getting constant calls from this number saying I took out a loan. They said I owe money but I have proof and records showing I never got a loan. When trying to talk to someone they are very rude, threaten to throw me in jail, and hang the phone up on me. Said they would email proof about a loan that I apparently took but never recieved. Also beware, they have my social, email, address, and phone number. If they are calling you then it is possible they have your info too.
