- anonymous| 1 replyI received a voicemail from Nicole Smith (which also has an accent). She left a number to call back at 323-443-2442. She says I should call back or my retained attorney and if not, my case will be downloaded to the courthouse. She to wished me good luck and good bye.

If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1. The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2. Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3. File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone. Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4. File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5. File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)
By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

Scam alert: Bogus debt collectors
By Leslie McFadden • Bankrate.com
Monday, Aug. 3
Posted 2 p.m.
Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry.
This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.
The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately.
What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references.
"The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.
Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology.
The BBB offers these tips:
• Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.
• Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.
• File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
• File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you. - EunyceeI have had the same thing happen to me today. I was told that I owed money to a payday loan company and they were about to press charges on me and I will go to jail for fraud among other criminal things. they said the total amount would cost me 5000.00 if I went to court but if I paid $1048.00 within 1 hour they would not press further charges. They had me horrified! I am a single parent and can't afford to go to jail along with pay these astronomical fees. Luckily my friend told me to not pay the fee and just wait to go to court; then we did a reverse search on the number which lead me to here!
- Eunycee replies to anonymousI had the same thing happen 2 me today from (323)443-2442 he said his name was Alex Rodgers. It took a few times for me to understand him because he had a heavy accent. He told me I owed money to a payday loan company and I was being sued, he also said he was on his way to the court house to file the complaint and I will be picked up on criminal charges(many at that). I was scared of course, he said unless I sent him a certified letter which he dictated to me what he wanted within an hour, and $1048 dollars 2 hrs after that I would be arrested and once taken to court I will end up owing over $5000 dollars. Luck for me a friend said don't do it, because I was about to empty my account...she also said go to google and do a reverse search on the number given and I did, thank God!! This is crazy they shouldn't do people like that!
- Eunycee replies to lametThank-you so much for this post, I just received a call like this today on my job! A guy name Alex Rogers from a firm I couldn't understand told me I was being sued and would face criminal charges, he also said the company I worked for would be notified. After pleading with him I had an hour to send a certified letter saying I wouldn't refute this charge and 3 hrs to send $1048 dollars if I didn't I would be sued for $5000 can you believe that? It scared me half to death, if it wasn't for a friend telling me she thinks it is a scam, tell them I will see them in court, she also said do a reverse search on the number if it weren't for that I would have emptied out my account and sent him all that I have.
- Michael FabelaMy mom called me in tears today about debt collectors saying they were going to take her to jail for some money she owed. I got all the info and called the number back (under *67 of course) and never got an answer. I did a search for the name 'Sean Marks' which was the name of the caller and didn't find anything, then did a search for 323-443-2442 and discovered THIS web page... I can't believe this is happening to innocent people.
- Caller: Ken Company ?
- Call type: Debt collector
- Luke ZalewskiMe and my brother were hanging out, and these people called him saying they were going to press charges and he was going to get arrested. Not only did this startle my brother, this startled me. Me and my brother are very close so I was worried for him. If you get a call from Kimmy Mactell, laugh, hang up the phone and don't worry about it.
