If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1. The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2. Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3. File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone. Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4. File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5. File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)
By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

Scam alert: Bogus debt collectors
By Leslie McFadden • Bankrate.com
Monday, Aug. 3
Posted 2 p.m.
Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry.
This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.
The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately.
What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references.
"The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.
Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology.
The BBB offers these tips:
• Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.
• Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.
• File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
• File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you. - KARLCaller says he is Richard White

- MS. HA HAI got a phone call from this number earlier today(11-3-10) at work with the caller saying that I was being sued for a payday loan. I asked him when I took the loan out, and what company I used. He got upset and starting yelling at me...telling me that he would send police and investigators to my job with paper work and he would see me in court Monday. He didn't give me the name of the company I supposedly had the loan with; but he didn't like the fact that he couldn't collect from me and hung up. He had a lot of my personal information which I don't know how he got it. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU DO ONLINE!!

- Jake Miller| 1 replyI received a call today from them. I wasn't at my phone but it went to voicemail. They said that my father had recently taken a loan out and there were some legal issues. (I couldnt really understand over his heavy accent). The guy told me to contact my dad and have my dad call him back. This guy also called my sister. We know not to respond to them but is kind of scary how much info these guys actually have.

- kathy replies to SheilaThank you for posting this it helps people like me. The date today is 11/5/10 and yesterday my daughter recieved one of these calls saying she was going to pay a debt she owed or they were going to sue her mother kathy and friend crystal my daughter owed no debt they gave her a badge number and a phone number but when she kept arguing she didnt owe he started screaming profanity i am not allowed to put on here. On her phone she has record and she turned it on so it is all on tape we have it saved in case.she called very upset to tell me and they even rambled her ss # off so they have all this information,as i went listening to this recording my home phone rang i answered and sounded just like the man i just herd on recording so i told my daughter to hold and let him proceed to tell me he was prosecuting me for my daughters debt took me a bit but finally got acs advanced cash service out of him so i asked what type of business he said they represent people who have been robbed murdered and he has me my daughter and a girl name crystal on video surveilance. I asked doing what i didnt do a thing and laughed.then the real abuse started. I did a reverse search on google for the phone number and it is in brooklynn new york even gave me a map.so once i seen thse posts i thought id share best way to deal with them since the law wont i called him back so much to let him know hes a fraud and give him heck that he hangs up on me now lol i did and will follow up on this with bbb and att general and everyone else this happens to much.In reality if i can find out that it is a land line 1 person owner no other lines why cant the phone company shut the number when this happens asap and maybe so many people wont have to deal with it or get screwed in some people cases.
- kathy replies to lametoh yes it is my daughter got a call the even at the end of the abusive call told her to die and we have it on recrding.they told her they were going to prosecute her mother and she called upset then my phone rang as i am listening to her recording and its him telling me he going to prosecute me because of my daughter if i dont pay her debt i laughed he said he has me and my daughter and another girl on video surveilance i laughed again and said do you want me to help you get started and call the police because i did nothing and i know it he got very irate and said things i cant put on here.i reported to bbb and att general and all agencies but they act like they cant find em well just type in number and do a reverse search they are in brooklynn new york and if i pay a dollar i can find the exact address so why cant the law the phone company do something.
- kathy replies to Jake MillerI agree same thing with my daughter we both got hem saying she owed and he was so abbuse in language i cant use it on here but once i laughed at him he knew he was getting nothing but yes he has all info there something up there.
- kathybest way to deal with these guys is to laugh and laugh hard i told them i would call police for them to get them started and laughed now i just call them to laugh more to tell them what scammers they are and back off my family.laugh some more they wont be calling me no more.

- AngelaThese people are saying they have a lawsuit against me and my ss number. The guy that called's name is Ronald Martin with a company called ACS. They called my job and I was off and told a coworker that I need to go to court. I reported them to the FTC because this is not the first time I have gotten these calls, it is someone new every couple of weeks. I never should have applied for a payday loan online.
