- Jo| 13 repliesI received a phone call at work from a John Watson who had an Indian accent. The number I had to call back was 409-655-3009. He proceeded to tell me that I took out a $385 loan in the time frame of 3/2010 or 4/2010....he only had the time frame...not the exact date. He knew all my information. He had my former phone number, but not my current one. He didn't even use my cell phone number. Said I took out a loan from a parent company called paydayusa.....but the loan was with firstcash.net. It was with a bank I have not done business with for over a year.
They keep calling my place of work and I just cannot take this nonsense anymore. What should I do? Has anyone else received a call from this number?- Caller: Did Not ID the company

If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1. The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2. Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3. File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone. Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4. File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5. File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)
By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

Scam alert: Bogus debt collectors
By Leslie McFadden • Bankrate.com
Monday, Aug. 3
Posted 2 p.m.
Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry.
This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.
The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately.
What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references.
"The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.
Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology.
The BBB offers these tips:
• Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.
• Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.
• File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
• File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you.- Caller: 409-655-3009

- Anonym| 4 repliesSo...these f'ers keep calling my work and harassing me. They called other offices of my job and threatened me. The number they called from is 409-655-3009 and 206-336-7231. The guy i spoke with and who called was "Officer" John Watson...when i called i got someone else who transferred me to him. When i asked for his name he said it was John Smith...then they transferred me to someone else who said he would call my boss and say bad things about me because i took out a loan at us cash advance...which is not the case. he said that i got the money and there is something wrong with me because i wouldn't pay it back...but i told him if i did get the money i wouldn't be arrested because they would send me to collections. He said he worked for the Bureau of Criminal Investigations...which i am calling now to report these people and hopefully they will research the scammers. The last person who kept calling me said his name was sam jefferson and i told him do not call my work and that my attorney would call them....they hang up on me when i ask for his address because i said i would serve them. the last call before i hung up..."sam jefferson" said the time starts now and i will be arrested in 45 minutes...suuuuuuure riiiiiiight.

4 a pay day lone that i did not take - NOT EASILY FOOLEDI received a call from someone named Officer Michael Black from the Bureau of Criminal Investigations. He had a very heavy Indian accent and threatened to have his "investigator officer" come to my home and place of employment, if I did not call him back @ 409-655-3009.
He stated that I needed to call within the next 2 hours or pay the consequences. He stated his investigative officer was going to track me down and that they were not going to create a good scene.
HA HA HA!!! A real debt collector cannot threaten or harass you over the phone. Obviously, these guys are not located in the US or they would know about fair debt collection practices.
I am not intimidated nor scared that someone is going to track me down because I know the law.- Caller: BCI

- sactoo replies to JoI have had the same experiences as you all, initiated by Officer John Watson then Officer James Brown. They threatened me with arresting me, wouldn't provide me with a copy of the "Signed Affidavit" or any other police report they have filed. I am filing a case of fraud with the FBI (http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx) - although this site is for internet crimes, as well as local PD case of harrassment. I hope it helps.
- Augster| 1 replyYup, SCAM 409-655-3009. [***] guy w/ Hindu accent called my place of work. Said I took out a loan from Cash Advance USA which I never did. My info was leaked on the internet one day when I filled out a loan advance application online. It was distributed everywhere. Hindu dude said his name was Michael Black from the Houston, TX Bureau of Criminal Investigations. Said he was going to file criminal charges and asked how I wanted to resolve this matter. I told him to continue w/ filing the charges, that this was my work number, and to stop calling.

- Legal eagle replies to Jo| 1 replyWell I have recieved numerous calls today at work from "James Brown". James had a very thick indian accent and claimed that he was calling from the B.C.I. (Bureau of Criminal Investigations) in Texas. He advised me that I was going to jail for a cash advance and cited me my full social security number. I advised him that I have never been in Texas and that he is mistaken. I promptly hung up. Then he called my employer back and I had his message placed into voicemail. The idiot left a voice mail message claiming I was going to jail again and that he was sending mobsters after me. He left the same number of: (409) 655-3009. The hilarious part of this is that I work for a law firm. I promptly called my boss and notified a few other attorneys and had them listen to the voice mail. We all concluded this is a scam and notifed the authorities. So whatever you do, do not pay these people money. Notify the FBI and you local police and if you can get them to leave you a message.Reply !
