I just got this SAME CALL not 5 minutes ago.....I let the woman go through her whole schpeel, telling me that I was elegible for this $7,000/month grant because I had never committed a crime. She gave me a confirmation number and asked me to read it back (I read it back wrong intentionally). She told me I was all set, and that they would need my bank card or credit card number to send the cash to. I laughed and said to the woman "does this really ever work on anyone??"  Sadly, I'm guessing it does.

    It is a scam.
The government does not offer grants to individuals for personal use.
It is a scam ran by off shore con artists to trick you into sending unrecoverable money to them.
They will say you need to get prepaid money cards, like Green Dot and load them with you own money. Once you give the details from the card to the scammer, they clean out the card. You loose your money, you get nothing.

The only legitimate avenue for government grants is through www.grants.gov which is the official US government web site for grants.
    From their FAQ concerning fraud:
    http://www.grants.gov/web/grants/support/general-support/grant-fraud.html

    Please note the following:

No government grant-making agency will make phone calls; send email or letters to solicit money or personal banking information from a potential grant recipient.
There are no processing fees for federal grants.
Federal grants are not issued for personal use, but are intended for institutions and non-profits to carry out projects with a public purpose.
Know who you're dealing with on the web.  Scam artists will often post a website with a name similar to a legitimate site.
If you have provided personal banking information to anyone claiming to be associated with a Federal grant agency, call your bank immediately to prevent unauthorized access to your account.

If you receive a call, mail, email, FAX, or any other form of communication soliciting you for a grant, STOP.
    It is a scam.
    Report it to the FTC:
    http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0113-government-grant-scams

File a complaint with the FTC. If you think you may have been a victim of a government grant scam, file a complaint with the FTC online https://ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ , or call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261. The FTC enters Internet, telemarketing, identity theft, and other fraud-related complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure online database available to hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

Sadly, these thieves can clone a number to make it look as if they are actually calling from that area - in this case, Washington, DC. I suspect they were calling from Barbados as I had a missed called from Barbados a few days ago. They hung up fast once I started laughing at the rediculousness of it. Glad to see that so many people were smart enough to Google the number to check up on it!

Oh no, Larry!!!  No reputable agency will EVER ask you to input your SSN!! If they are wanting to verify it they will ask you for the last 4 digits. I hate these idiots for trying to swindle people out of their hard earned money!!

A lady called and said the Government was going to give me $7,000.00 grant because I did not owe taxes and I did not have a crime record.  I cut her off and said the Govenrment just don't give you money.  She got up set with me and asked if I wanted the money or not.  I told her NOT and she then tried to get me to giver personal information about my self, but I declined and she hung up.

Got a call from this number earlier today. It was too noisy to hear what the person was saying. They hung up on me. I called back, and found it was the Department of Treasury number, however it says right there in the recorded message that they will not call individual taxpayers on their personal cell phone, and if you are returning a missed call, it is fraudulent. Also received one of those stupid (000) 000-0000 calls. If they call me again, I'm reporting them.

Scam caller with faked US Treasury phone number on Caller ID.

Folks speaking in background sounded like call was originating from India, like so many other phony telemarketer calls we receive.

We let them all go to voicemail so they don't waste our time.  We only answer calls with Caller ID from people we know.

My daughter in college just received this same call from the same number. They told her that as long as she owed no bank and had not been collected of a felony that she is eligible to receive a grant for $7000 minus 200 something dollars. She refused to verify information and when she asked why isnt the Dept of Treasury sending via mail because the phone was listed in her name, they evaded her question and instead attemppted to get her to agree and do something at a moneygram place. Scary that they can call from numbers that appear to be from the US Treasury.

Just posted about my daughter receiving a call from this number a few minutes saying the same as others listed. I called the number bavk and like you said... it is the Dept of Treasury but they do say in their automated message that if you received a call from someone saying they were with the Dept of Treasury that it was fraudulent as they conduct their operations via postal mail.

Offered me $7000 FREE! Was calling from the U.S. treasury office.  Must be my lucky day.  He started asking about my contact info and I interrupted him and said, "wouldn't it be easier if I just gave you my bank acct # and routing info? Also I could give you my favorite online passwords in case you want to verify I am who you say I Am?? He stuttered and stammered a bit then said, "uh what???"  I then said, "I SAID, YOUR NUMBER LITERALLY APPEARS ON HUNDREDS OF FRAUD ALERTS WHEN I GOOGLE IT, YOU HEAR THAT?".   For some reason he hung up on me?  How rude.

I just got a call from this number on my cell and answered it on the first ring. I heard ringing as though I was calling someone, so I immediately hung up and googled it.  Glad I didn't waste any of my valuable time with an idiot.
