- ChessiePlease do not answer unknown numbers!!! All they need is a live voice at the other end.
They are robocalls......all they want is someone to answer and your number is sold to other telemarketers. So just don't pick up phone.....after awhile it dwindles a bit and is annoying but now I just let it ring and check caller ID. Later and delete them- Call type: Telemarketer
- Steve Wilson replies to MaryThe problem with the DNC list is that the FCC didn't want to do anything for the last decade, based on that administration. The FTC has made an effort but is underfunded, without the amount of authority and enforcement resources it really needs (read: "smaller government").
- Steve Wilson replies to MaryHow are you "blocking" the number? Through your carrier or your actual land-line phone? If the former, it should not ring through. If the latter, it should not ring more than twice (amount of time to "recognize" the Caller ID).
- LKY| 1 replystop calling - I'm never going to answer.
- Call type: Debt collector
- Steve Wilson replies to ShannonIf you answer or press anything, it confirms a "live" number/person. They can then call you with any scam or sell your number.
BTW, if you do not answer and it goes to voice mail, whether or not they leave a message, it confirms a "live" number that can be sold.
The DNC list needs to be updated with more teeth (including big, hungry dogs being let loose in telemarketing rooms).
(1) The possession, sale, trade or sharing of any call list outside of a specific company, including parent, subsidiary, or any other related company should be a Federal offense subject to a mandatory large fine, say $1,000 per number.
(2) Use of any automatic dialer, without the written consent of the person called...ditto....$1,000.
(3) All non-profits, charities, religious organizations, and political organizations would also be subject to the same rules (If I want to receive their calls, I'll give them written permission. And I don't want to hear any crying tales of woe from any of them. They had their chance and failed to police themselves.) - Demented GeezerForged calling number ID since calling it gives a "not in service" message. The recorded message concerned some kind of senior emergency call device, but spent more time saying I would receive $1,000 in grocery coupons than it spent talking about the device.
This is about the fifth time they've called. The calls started a few weeks after a medical emergency in which I used the town's fire rescue ambulance. They might have gotten that information from public records and used it to find hot prospects for that kind of service.- Caller: "Senior Life Alert" or something like that
- Call type: Telemarketer
- RPWTired of these scam calls day and night. I don't answer calls from numbers I don't know. I had to get rid of answering machine because of these calls. We can be forced to pay for others insurance but the government can't control these people.
- Caller: New York no scam name
- Call type: Telemarketer
- UncleFesterThe losers won't give up, they call with a 212 number, but no name on caller ID. Been calling me for 3 days now, and don't leave a message when I let the answering machine handle it.
- Caller: Dumbasses
- John replies to LKYThe scammers don't run this site, and WHO is it that you would prefer they not call--are they supposed to look up LKY in the phone book? Another doopa.
- Rural NY replies to John| 1 replyHere in rural NY, we are also impressed when we get calls from those sophisticated people down in The City. We don't answer either.
- SAmElite Information Solutions from Orlando FL ....again again again ?
- Caller: Elite Information Solutions
- Notachump| 2 replies#1 - DO NOT ANSWER any number that has:
A) ONLY the number
B) Number and city
C) City
D) Unavailable
E) Private
#2 - REPUTABLE people/companies will have their names and numbers CLEARLY marked on the Caller ID.
#3 - AUTO-ANSWERS - These are the calls that ring and ring, and then sound as if they have "hung up", but then you here a "beep, beep". The Caller ID says "Answering". - Kopiscammer read this forum too. They could get tru after 5 rings and left message.
Now they know,it's 'live.' number and will keep calling.
If not this number 212-677-5122 will be other spoofed numbers.
Will have to increase to 7 rings so robocall will hang up before the answering machine picks up message.
I bet there are some senior citizens fall prey to this scheme, otherwise they wouldn't be calling.
- Call type: Telemarketer
- Windy MasonWe live in rural Virginia...This number calls our house EVERY DAY :( When we answer, they hang up on us. - Peeved| 1 replySo, I get it that this is a widespread and well known scam, but how can consumers put a stop to it, especially since so many like myself is on the no call list?
- Caller: NEW YORK
- Billie replies to PeevedLikely, the best way to at least slow down the calls is to spread the word of these and other scammers, so they run out of potential victims, making it unprofitable for these druggies to continue calling.
- Lucycall every day.Must be very hungry that the victims are getting scarce because of this 800notes site..
Scammers also have to eat too, folk
keep reporting. - John replies to Rural NYYou, myself, and others that visit this site obviously have internet access and caller id.as a first line of defense against fraud. God help the low income and the elderly, the main targets of these disgusting scammers, who many times, possibly due to financial considerations, cannot afford that luxury. Passing on the word of these lowlifes can help others to avoid being victimized.
- Steve Wilson replies to Notachump| 1 replySorry to disagree with you. It would be nice if "...REPUTABLE people/companies will have their names and numbers CLEARLY marked on the Caller ID." I would love to block all Caller IDs with "Unavailable" or "Out of Area".
Unfortunately, many people have no idea how to work the technology they use every day. Examples: they have no idea how their Caller ID appears to others / they do not know how to turn off their ring tones in a public place / they are oblivious to the fact that the screen on their "smarter than they are" phone acts like a spotlight in a dark room (think movie theater).
Many companies, especially small businesses, have no idea how their Caller ID appears to others. I blocked a doctor's office for 6 weeks before I realized who the number belonged to. After almost a year, they still have no idea how to change their Caller ID.
