Some dude who's not from around these parts was trying to scam me with some kind of cruise. No thanks. Who falls for this stuff anyway?  BTW, this guy's voice was hilarious, well worth answering the call just to hear it.

Ohh..... I just read through the other comments and I see this guy was running the windows scam.  Crap, I couldn't hear a word he said.  I thought he said something about how I "won a cruise with windows" which was an odd way to phrase it and I thought he meant a balcony stateroom, which sounded nice but a little fishy.  Oh, I get it now.....  He must have said something like a "what  want to do is fix Windows" or something like that.  Man, I couldn't understand a word this dude said.  Joke's on me I guess, but it's pretty funny.  They should teach these guys to aspirate their consonants before calling America.

Took a call from a guy with an Indian accent trying to tell me he was with Windows and doing a "check up".  I interrupted him and told him to take his useless scam elsewhere and hung up on him...  What a moron.

I'm sorry to say that I was dumb enough to actually let this gal and guy (Mark) gain access to my computer. While I feel like a total dumbass for doing so, I'm posting here to tell you all to just hang up on them. My laptop is now useless and I will have to have it wiped and Windows 7 installed again. I got the same spiel about being from Microsoft and he was diligent about going through and showing me my "infected" files and how they were going to make my computer crash. He really tried to get me to spend $262+ on this "fix" and I refused. My impression was that the man and woman were working as a team, and there were very loud men talking in the back ground, like a call center. Who knows, could have been a local card game. The end result was that I didn't fall for the scam, but he trashed my computer and made it unusable. The really sad part is, I thought I was savvy enough not to fall for this crap, but here I am.

It's not legit.  Legitimate computer repair stores do not cold call people and tell them their computer is sending out error messages/viruses/malware, etc.

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/avoid-phone-scams.aspx

Cybercriminals don't just send fraudulent email messages and set up fake websites. They might also call you on the telephone and claim to be from Microsoft. They might offer to help solve your computer problems or sell you a software license. Once they have access to your computer, they can do the following:

Trick you into installing malicious software that could capture sensitive data, such as online banking user names and passwords. They might also then charge you to remove this software.

Take control of your computer remotely and adjust settings to leave your computer vulnerable.

Request credit card information so they can bill you for phony services.

Direct you to fraudulent websites and ask you to enter credit card and other personal or financial information there.

Neither Microsoft nor our partners make unsolicited phone calls (also known as cold calls) to charge you for computer security or software fixes.

Telephone tech support scams: What you need to know

Cybercriminals often use publicly available phone directories so they might know your name and other personal information when they call you. They might even guess what operating system you're using.

Once they've gained your trust, they might ask for your user name and password or ask you to go to a website to install software that will let them access your computer to fix it. Once you do this, your computer and your personal information is vulnerable.

Do not trust unsolicited calls. Do not provide any personal information.

Here are some of the organizations that cybercriminals claim to be from:

    Windows Helpdesk

    Windows Service Center

    Microsoft Tech Support

    Microsoft Support

    Windows Technical Department Support Group

Microsoft Research and Development Team (Microsoft R & D Team)

How to protect yourself from telephone tech support scams

If someone claiming to be from Microsoft tech support calls you:

Do not purchase any software or services.

Ask if there is a fee or subscription associated with the "service." If there is, hang up.

Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you can confirm that it is a legitimate representative of a computer support team with whom you are already a customer.

Take the caller's information down and immediately report it to your local authorities.

Never provide your credit card or financial information to someone claiming to be from Microsoft tech support.

What to do if you already gave information to a tech support person

If you think that you might have downloaded malware from a phone tech support scam website or allowed a cybercriminal to access your computer, take these steps:

Change your computer's password, change the password on your main email account, and change the password for any financial accounts, especially your bank and credit card.

Scan your computer with the Microsoft Safety Scanner to find out if you have malware installed on your computer.

Install Microsoft Security Essentials. (Microsoft Security Essentials is a free program. If someone calls you to install this product and then charge you for it, this is also a scam.)

Note: In Windows 8, Windows Defender replaces Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender runs in the background and notifies you when you need to take specific action. However, you can use it anytime to scan for malware if your computer isn’t working properly or you clicked a suspicious link online or in an email message.

    Will Microsoft ever call me?

There are some cases where Microsoft will work with your Internet service provider and call you to fix a malware-infected computer—such as during the recent cleanup effort begun in our botnet takedown actions. These calls will be made by someone with whom you can verify you already are a customer. You will never receive a legitimate call from Microsoft or our partners to charge you for computer fixes.

Received a call from 309-474-0863 and a guy said he was calling about my computer.  I asked "what computer", and he said "your windows computer".  I said "My work computer" and he said yes.  I asked "Do you work for "Name of my company"? and he said "yes".  When I asked "which office", he hung up.  Clearly a scam.  Don't answer any of his questions.

I get these phony calls a lot, even though I diligently report the phone numbers to the FTC/do not call list. So today I decide to play along even tho I didn't have the computer on. When it got to a point where he asked me what I saw on the screen, I said it's an error message, its says warning the guy on the phone is trying to scam you. Needless to say he immediately hung up. They try to impress you that they know things about you by telling you your address, but this guy had the zip code for another town. I used to get mad and hang up, but I decided why not just waste their time and keep them on the phone as long as possible, maybe they will eventually give up and take my number of their list, but probably not, so just have some fun and know that you have frustrated them instead letting them frustrate you.

309 is new number for my area.  I block area codes BUT the scammers just call again using a new fake number.

I never answer unknown numbers or unknown caller.

They are not interested in removing your name or doing anything nice - they are searching for personal data to use illegally.

I got this number on my caller ID 3 times in the past month saying Varna, Ill. I didn't answer the first two calls since I don't know anyone in Illinois but I answered the last one. Was a man with a thick Indian accent. He asked how I was doing, I said fine. He said he was from a company, said the name but was fast and I couldn't understand it. Then told me that he got a report from my computer that Microsoft has a virus and my computer will crash soon if he doesn't fix it now. I told him I have protection and my computer is fine. He told me, rudely, that I don't know what I'm talking about and that I have to listen to him. I said that my protection is the best and I haven't had a virus in all the yrs I've had my computer (which is true). He asked my if I was a technician. I said no but my son is. He got very rude and yelled that I know nothing. I yelled back and told him, with several curse words, that he is trying to scam me to get info and money and I was going to report him. I hung up. He called back right away and I took the call and he yelled "why did you hang up on me!?" I told him he is a scammer and if he calls back I would call the police and hung up. So I looked up the number online and found this site.

Maybe we should all report all such calls to the FCC. Then maybe they'll put some teeth in the DO NOT CALL laws. Or maybe figure a way to forward all of them to our representatives in Washington. Hmm ....

This person had just called me. Says Varna, IL  also a bunch of #'s on caller id (12022040484). Not sure what the #'s mean.

A man called with an accent, hard to understand him as there was alot of talking in the background. All I understood from him was that he was calling about my computer. I told him I did not have one. No reply - so I hung up on the bleeping idiot.

I am on the DO NOT CALL list.. Yes works very well.. lol  not.

LOL!! This number keeps calling our business - I pick up the phone and keep punching buttons without saying a word until they hang up. Then they hang up and KEEP calling back. After calling six or seven times in a row, I think they gave up. We were having a good time with them too, darn it....
