- Toni replies to TimoThank you so very much for the advice! Usually, I just change up my accent, claim I just got the number and have no idea who they're looking for, and then hanging up on them. Oh, I do block, but these people either spoof these numbers, or they're doing these calls illegally by having their numbers say that they're a plumbing service. These people need to be shut down and permanently!

I'm in awe of your expertise, but what exactly is a 1099-C? I thought that had something to do with self-employment. Every single phone number that I don't recognize, I immediately Google it, and I'm getting calls from California, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Illinois, etc. Sometimes I get a hit on the number, and mostly it says that it's a personal landline from either a Jane or John Doe.
Is there any possibility that you can email me what you typed out on the first page? I suffer badly from migraines, and trying to read the small print aggravates them. I sincerely would appreciate it. Thanks! - Mike-in-MD replies to Toni| 5 replies1099-R is for self employment as a contract employee and is also used for pensions, annuities and the like. 1099-C is when an entity owed a debt writes off all or a portion of the debt and reports it to the IRS. They are required to issue the 1099-C to the debtor and that amount is considered income for tax purposes. It is used when at least $600 of the debt is canceled, lesser amounts are not reportable.
- Toni replies to Tamara| 1 replyOnce it's charged off, they cannot collect. The company has already filed on that debt, meaning that they were paid for it. That's what they're trying to do to me.
- Toni replies to Mike-in-MD| 2 repliesI never received any 1099-C for a couple of debts that were charged off. I wonder why I never received one. Is it just certain states that does that, or all states must comply with that? Thanks!
- BigA replies to ToniYou are confusing a 1099-Misc with the 1099-C. The former is usually issued for self employment such as when a subcontractor does work for a general contractor. The GC then issues the 1099-Misc. to prove to the IRS that it paid the money out and can thus deduct it as a business expense. The 1099-Misc is also issued for a lot of other reasons as well. The 1099-C is limited to forgiveness of debt. For instance you have a $5,000 credit card bill that you never paid. The bank will write that off and send you a 1099-C for $5,000. This is now considered income and must be declared when you file taxes.
- BigA replies to Mike-in-MD1099-R is not for self employment. 1099-Misc. is. You are correct about the rest. https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1099-misc
- Mike-in-MD replies to Mike-in-MDThat should be 1099-Misc not 1099-R. I have the latter on the brain as I get ready to file my taxes this year.

The way you stated it, that is not correct. The only way the debt cannot be collected on is if they issued you a 1099-c or you declared bankruptcy and had it discharged. Charged off is simply an accounting term. It basically takes it off the books so that the company is no longer declaring it an asset. I don't know where this "they were paid for it" comes from. Who is doing the paying? I know that when I was in business and someone stuck me no one ever paid me simply because I charged the amount off as a bad debt.Quote:Once it's charged off, they cannot collect - BigA replies to ToniIt is up to the creditor to issue them. Some don't bother. IRS rules and regulations are Federal and apply to every state.
- Gunnar replies to ToniOnce a 1099-C is issued the debt is legally "Dead". It can no longer be collected by any debt collector. Debt collection outfits know this. They never want to give up the chance to collect on that debt. Threats of sending a 1099-C are almost always empty. It's a last resort for them & will only be used for large debts that might be useful for a tax write-off.
Unless you have huge debt a 1099-C is nothing to be afraid of. You'll only pay the taxes on the debt & those will be based on your tax bracket & circumstances. I doubt that you have anything to worry about.
Gunnar - odieleft no message...added to reject list....portfolio recovery...
- Fed upThese scums call from different numbers every few days. I never answer and they never leave a number. What I can’t figure is why they call me. I have never been late on any payment to any creditor and never had a bad debt and all my credit reports show this.
- Caller: Portfolio Recovery.
- LexiThey call but never leave a message. The phone screen shows account services. However, when you look them up by number, it never shows that it is from Portfolio Recovery. So, this is a scam.
