Ummm, if they "confirm" the debt is yours... they can open it up on your credit report like fresh debt.

Best to block and ignore in the future..

If you know its them, you can answer with.... "Per the laws of the state of (your state) i need to inform you that this call is being recorded for all purposes as allowed by law, including violation of telecommunication, telemarketing and debt collection practices. If you do not wish to be recorded you should silently hang up, otherwise SPEAK NOW!"

Likely they hung up by the time you got to STATE.

I love when they then tell me they're recording me... to which I say..." ILLEGALLY UNLESS YOU DISCLAIM IT... What city, state and company did you say you were calling from again?"

    Click.

Portfolio debt collectors keep calling me looking for Vanessa Money (yes, that's the name she uses, whether real or not).  They don't listen when I tell them she hasn't had this number for over 5 years; they repeatedly call because they think I'm lying, I guess.  This broad must have been using my number for years after she gave it up.  Oh, I even got a couple of booty calls in the middle of the night from men that used to hook up with her.  Sounded desperate (funny).

    Mr. B.
Rouge debt-collection scam.  “Portfolio Recovery Services” (or someone claiming to be calling on their behalf) calling about alleged debts. Whether these [***] are the real P.R.S. or just another boiler-room bill-boy claiming to be them doesn’t really matter since neither one is a legitimate bill-collector anyway.  They both buy up old expired, or bogus accounts for pennies on the dollar, and thus have no actual legal recourse against anyone who knows their rights under the law.  They have been sued more times Harvey Winestien and have about half his sense of professional ethics, so don’t waste your Sunday manners on these scum, just cuss them out.  Do not forward any messages or give any info Hang up and block.

Listen. Do not ever, ever answer, a single question. The only way that you ever respond to a question, is with another question. If you get a call, any call, that starts with, "may I speak to....." enter your name, or whoever you are protecting... You say (in order to be polite in case it is an important call), "may i all who is calling... This is designed to make them either to demand to speak to that person, say that it is a" personal business matter", say that "this is an attempt to collect a debt" and/or "this call is being recorded", or finally, to say what the nature of their call is. If it is the first the things, or if their business is to collect a debt, then you do not want to answer that you are the person that they are looking for, and you NEVER admit to anything! If it is a company that you owe money to, and I mean a company that you agreed to pay a certain amount to, and not someone else that they sold the debt to (debt collector), then it is up to you how you want to deal with that. If you want to pay that debt back, which is always a good idea considering that everything else that is important your life has been taken care of, then do what you must, but be careful what you agreed to. Don't let them pressure you into agreeing to something that is going to cause you any kind of difficulty in meeting previous commitments, or living a decent life. What I am more concerned with, is that debt collectors. First of all, anyone or any business that makes a living of of going after people for someone else's money, can do so of they are making money from the company for their time and efforts, as long as they are ethical, and do not use, tactics that leave people scared, hurt, or traumatized. However, companies that buy debts for a lesser amount, and then tell you that you owe them money, are just short of being crooks, and I am defining them according to the law. According to me they are crooks. If you never made any agreement with these people, that you owe them money for any reason, then you don't owe them money, and it won't do you any good to pay them. They may tell you that will help your credit report and this and that, but it won't. If you're going to pay a debt back attempt to pay it to the company that you owe. If they tell you that they written it off, then tell them to take it off your credit report. I'm not saying they will, but they should. With these companies that collect debts that they bought from other companies, you must never tell them that you are who they are looking for, and you must never agree to anything. You were not obligated to talk to them. If you are called by someone, and you cannot determine that they have legitimate business with you, then never say that you are whoever they're asking for. Simply tell them that you do not wish to talk to them, or that you do not wants to be recorded. They make it hostile, they may say if you're not so and so they won't record you, or whatever the case may be. Just ignore them, hang up the phone, and block the number. As long as you cannot ever agree to be that person, or never make any kind of confession or any kind of agreement, then they have no legal hold over you.

Started calling a week ago. My phone immediately identified the call as probable Debt Collector. I have LifeLock and another credit monitoring service. All are clean. I assume they’re trying to resurrect an old debt of my in-laws who passed away in 2013 and 2015. They had a BK in 2012. I was executor of the estate which is settled. Apparently these guys fish for old debts (illegally) and try to make quick cash.

It  is a zombie debt collector. They will robo-call you everyday from a different number. You can either ignore them or get a new phone number to get a break for a little bit. Once they located the new number they will call again. If you can get a phone which is not in your name you will be good.
