    PRA
This group of scammers has purchased bad debt for cents on the dollar.  They prey on people that they think will pay them---elderly, disabled and sometimes just anybody with a telephone.  If you have caller ID and see Portfolio Recovery, DO NOT ANSWER.  Sign up with DoNotCall.gov and start filing complaints with them because they go directly to the FTC.  If you have time, send letters to them as well, but do not put your return address on the envelope.  These people are not trying to recover money for banks and financial institutions, they are recovering money to put into their own business, which is illegal in every way possible.

Here's something interesting and just what I suspected.  Portfolio Recovery calls appear to call from different places in the US and Canada, all with different numbers.  But its really a "boiler room" in one or maybe more places.

So I tracked a few missed calls from my home phone carrier and forwarded the calls back to PRA.  They all came up as the same phone number after I forwarded them even though the numbers from caller ID were different.  Let's see what happens now.

Third time I received a call from this number.

Called cell phone, left no message.  No name on caller ID, so it was probably a scam / telemarketer call, or debt collector trying to scam someone on a zombie or nonexistent debt.  Posts here identified caller as Portfolio Recovery a debt collector.  Which explains why robot didn’t leave message: it’s illegal for debt collectors to call cell phones.

If you receive many calls from Portfolio Recovery, check the internet for attorneys who specialize in suing debt collectors.  A friend of mine in California did so, and received about $2,000 in statutory damages.  It was a contingency case so he didn't have to pay anything up front.  Keep copies of cell phone screen shots and keep a log of all calls and messages received.

Second call today at 5:26 p.m., this morning's call was at 10:39 a.m.

I'm logging Portfolio Recovery calls, might file a lawsuit against them.  Doesn't do much good to call them.  A friend received constant calls from Portfolio Recovery for a debt that wasn't hers.  She called to complain, but to no avail.

After several years, Portfolio stopped calling.

Company has a bad reputation for trying to collect non-existent or zombie debts.

Since I relocated 2 years ago and got a new phone number, I have been receiving numerous calls from a lot of debt collection agencies. I started keeping a log about a year ago, and Portfolio Recovery has called the most times, from different numbers and caller IDs. If I answer, there's no one there. I usually don't answer and they never leave a message. I'm assuming that they are looking for someone who used to have my phone number.

A few months ago I drafted a cease-and-desist letter but I decided not to send it. I think I may just make matters worse by sending a letter that gives my name and address. Right now all they have is my phone number. If I ever get a human on the line, I will ask who they are looking for, but I will still never give my name. I have had perfect credit for decades so I know it's not me they want.

Never, never give these people any more information than they already have. If they have your name, chances are they have your address too. All you need to do is calmly tell them to send you a letter giving the information about the debt. If they won't do that, then they are not in compliance with the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act and you have no obligation to talk to them..

    Um ...
If you send them an appropriate C&D letter, and if they do not comply, you can take the next step and get money FROM them!
Re-read the FDCPA for more information.

The caller is DEFINITELY, Portfolio Recovery,  Lowest of the lowest SCUMBAGS around!  They are CONSTANTLY masking their number with local area codes in addition to other USA area codes, rarely do they call now from 800 numbers.  I can't stand these filthy people. THEY BREAK THE LAW, Call before 8am, and refuse to stop calling even when you tell them they have the wrong number.  Blocking their number does little good, they simply use their computers to scramble another number and end up getting thru. Blocking has become out of date, if someone has your number, blocking "their' number doesn't stop a determined caller, between textnow, pinger, and the countless other similar apps around, its easy to get around being blocked.

Called cell.  ID shows Ross, Pennsylvania, did not leave a message.  Fourth call from this number.

Portfolio Recovery calls once or twice a day.  Caller ID shows PRA has called my cell phone from the following locations:

    Ross, PA
    Birmingham, AL
    Bells, TN
    Oakland, CA
    Boone County, KY

PRA didn't call for four days, so I figured its robot gave up.  No such luck.

I received my first PRA call on March 10, 2016.  PRA has called me for four weeks.  I'm keeping a phone log, will eventually hire an attorney to sue them, or sue them myself.

Another call from my robot buddy at Portfolio Recovery.  No name on caller ID, showed Ross, Pennsylvania.  Sixth call to my cell from this number.

Portfolio is notorious for cold calling people and accusing them of owing money in an attempt to illegally collect on a nonexistent debt.

Called twice in a row today. "Portfolio Recov" is what the caller ID said. They have started to really harass the business. When we answer though, nobody says a word and they hang up on us. What is the point?
