Got a call from this company saying that I owed the phone company money under a business name that I no longer had.  Called the phone company and verified that NO money is owed.  Scam or mistake? I don't really know, but the phone company advised me to file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the FTC.  This company is not even in the same state as I am!

As with all debt collectors, if it is not your debt or belongs to someone you know, contact the FTC and file a complaint.  Explain that you have no bad debts or they are calling about someone else's debt, which is against the law, since it is a violation of privacy.  The FTC will send your complaint to the company and you can handle from there.  I recently was successful in getting a company to stop calling my personal cell phone looking for someone I know.  How they got my number, I have no clue.  This is another company I need to handle about the same situation.  I am NOT related to the person they are trying to contact and it is against the law to contact me.

Wow, fourteen months it took for the crabby shill to "PPPPPP" on her back an tell her it's only rain. Note the typically low reading comprehension skill. Neither mother nor daughter was identified as an alleged debtor, and it's not a given that any valid debt was outstanding. Also note the cheap distraction of blaming the victim so we won't notice any likely FDCPA violations.

How do you "know (you) owe them money"? It was a consumer debt? You have a paper dunning letter? You have validation on paper from the original creditor? Those are but two of many FDCPA rights. For sure MB&W did not lend you funds, and it may not represent that lender but a debt buyer.

Naturally you don't want to pay bullies and liars. The CFPB and FTC don't expect you to. Compare what you've experienced to what the laws allow, then decide if you want to comply with or resist the collector.

In my case this turned out to be a valid call.

Initially I was suspicious as they called from a cell phone and not the company number.  In any case I called the main line back and provided my reference number.  The person (Laura) was cordial.  I asked for information on the debt it turned out my business registered agent bill had gone unpaid and it was sent to them for collections.   I paid the registered agent directly and not the collection agency.   Registered agent pulled it back from collections.

That's totally believable. I can see how you forgot to pay considering this so called Business Agent never sent you a bill or reminders of that overdue bill, or even possibly called to see why it wasn't paid. Instead he chose to send it directly to a collection company that probably took a third of the amount due to him.

They call, and call it never stops.  The caller states he is with MBW, that he is an attorney.  Very rude, will not let me speak one word, he goes on and on. They have only called once today, makes me wonder what’s next with this company.  Just want then to stop their harassing calls..  I tried to block number, but my system says it is not a valid number??????

I keep getting calls, which my phone blocks spam and telemarketers from getting through, then they leave a voice mail stating what everyone else is saying. I tried to call several times, but get recorder. I don't leave messages! I have learned a lot about what to do about them from all your comments. Thank you very much, I'm going to try your suggestions.

2018-05-18 Got call on my cell from [to me] odd area code, so let it go to voicemail.  They were looking for "AAA Septic Service", left a different callback # and case#.  Called back on my land line, explained I was not them, which they did not find surprising and promised to remove my number from their system.  2018-05-31, same thing happens.  This time I first ask them to spell the name of their firm: McCarthy, Burgess & Wolff.  Are you bill collectors?  "you don't need to know".  Again they promise to remove my number.  "Why did you call me again after promising to remove me after the 18th?"  Now he says they called me on the 18th, but I never called back.  This may well be what his computer screen is telling him, but I dispute it.  Either they have a bad computer system, or are too pressed/not motivated to update it.  "What do you want from me?" he finally asks.  "just don't call me again".

Some lady called my office and I told her we no longer handle the business she was looking for. I got her the information she needed and I tried explaining to her that we don't handle it. She said that even if she can't get ahold of someone she is going to call my office back. What part of WE DON'T HANDLE IT did she not understand. She got rude when she didn't like my answer and hung up on me. I hope she calls back so I can hang up on her. Good luck with getting your job done with your crap @ss attitude. So much for being helpful.

Debt Collectors for Cox Communications. They installed fast internet here at our office, they also installed a FREE WiFi for everyone, including people from the street, they never told us there was a FREE WiFi for the public here at our office as well, we noticed a bunch of strangers and cars in front of our office almost 27-7,  we discovered this later one, placed an complaint, they disconnected us and now they want $5,000 dollars for their equipment and Breach of Contract. Well, good luck !....we are forwarding this issue to our attorneys.
