- SpaceThey just tried calling me from this number. They called me from 559-457-0453 last week and in an unguarded moment I answered the call and they brought up a bill that I paid-off twelve years ago. I told the caller "this was dealt-with years ago please don't call me again. Goodbye." and then I hung up.
They're trying to get someone to answer so they can pin a debt they probably bought from some scammers so they can wring-out more money from people who don't have it.- Caller: Portfolio Recovery

You can stop the phone calls using the federal government regulations. Dept collectors do not have the right to call you or harras you. Write a letter to them stating it must be by mail only. There are many more rights you may not know about so please read. Save yourself the heart ache I went through and find out from the goverment how to protect yourself. - Wont Pay Portfolio Recovery**This is a long post...follow my advice**
DO NOT let these buyers of time barred debts intimidate you. DO NOT speak with them. Hang up immediately and do not confirm or deny your identification. Debts have time limits for the original creditor to file for legal remedy if a debt is not paid. If you were not sued within 3 or 4 years after the debt became delinquent, you won't be sued regardless of the threats. Each state is different on times to sue, so research the statute of limitations for your state. ALL negative entries fall off your credit after 7 years. These aged debt buyers purchase debts discharged in bankruptcy, charged off, etc. for a few pennies on the dollar. Ex: A $10,000 8 year old credit card debt purchased by Portfolio Recovery for less than $200 may not show on your credit report but that scum will use predictive dialer systems allowing their computers to calls thousands of numbers per hour all day long. The profit margin is there for PR to contact the debtor seeking any payment to recoup their investment. Rarely will a person come on the phone to immediately speak with you when you answer because there are multiple calls being handled by one low paid desk jockey. These debts have no standing in court and can easily be defeated via statute of limitations or laches defense. However, these leeches at times will try to sneak a suit past the debtor so a default judgment can be obtained. Be attentive for any notices of suit and respond. You will win. A default judgment puts the debt back into the current arena for collections, levies and garnishments. DO NOT think PR will stop calling if you answer the phone and curse them out telling them you are broke. It may make you feel good for telling them off, but, It won't work! They will sometime re-age an old account with a current date and report it to the credit bureau if you currently have good credit. DO NOT pay any settlement offers! If the account is beyond FCRA statutes, it can't be reported past 7 years. If you pay on a settlement offer, the account will be reported as SETTLED for a lesser amount and the years of being past due will be reported on your credit report. DO NOT pay a dime! DO NOT respond! Hang up and block their numbers. Many newer cordless phone sytems allow 20 or more numbers to be blocked. Also, your social security number, address and name is flagged with the bureaus by these old debt buyers so when your life improves and you apply for any type of credit, utilities, or financed purchases, they have the latest information on you and will make contact sooner or later. Let them spend their money on postage and "account reps". Simply ignore them. Don't let it get personal with these scum or they will win if you speak to them. I was badly injured 15 years ago through my own mistake and was unable to pay anybody. I went from GREAT credit to bad credit with all negatives on my credit report. After 9 years, I got a job and my credit report cleaned itself up after 7 years and I now have good credit. No, I won't pay my old bills because they were written off for tax breaks by the original credit card comapnies and I refuse to pay blood suckers.- Caller: Portfolio Recovery

- mc3trubleWe have been getting calls from Portfoliorecov 510.355.1780 for a few months now, my husband finally called them back and asked them to stop calling us; they claimed we had an outstanding amount on a CitiBank account, we have no such account! My husband asked the guy what Soc. Sec. number they had, it was not the right number. The person on the phone tried to argue that he had the right guy, my husband asked for the supervisor. Finally after 10 minutes the guy claimed they would take us off their call list.
I am reporting them to the Federal Trade Commission - Anyone receiving harassing debt collection calls - EVEN IF YOU OWE THEM - needs to know this information, they are not allowed to harass you, your family members, or your employers - please file a complaint! The law firm of Turner Law Offices, LLC has filed a Class Action lawsuit against Defendant Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc. ("PRA") in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia on behalf of all persons in the State of Georgia who, since October 28, 2010, received a non-emergency telephone call from PRA to a cellular telephone through the use of an automatic telephone dialing system or an artificial or prerecorded voice and who did not provide prior express consent for such calls during the transaction that resulted in the debt owed.- Caller: PRA
- law offices replies to bnb1031The account is dormant that was sold off to another shark. After 4 years the statute is expired. They can still send you mail or call to intimidate you into paying. If you meake 1 payment, you will be reopening the claim. Don't do it.
- jonathonThere is a statue of limitations which has run out. This debt collection agency lets you know they cannot come after you by state law if this debt is old. They have their recording machine on and if you ask them questions, these callers remain and will not admit if the debt is too old. This is harrassment if they keep calling you.

- dinibobini replies to loanwolfThey don't just give leads, other companies buy the accounts and restart all the info like it's new debt and not 15 years old. I heard it coined as "zombie debt" I think or something similar.
- anonymous alwaysThese guys are like the terminator...they just don't know when to quit. Just last week, they sent me a letter about a proposed "settlement" of an old debt. They had various options to pay off the 11 year old debt and highlighted the savings I would get. It wasn't that much savings. They buy these things for penny's on the dollar. Then they make a killing if some one pays them. What I want to know is...after they get paid on these old debts after harassing someone to death...do they pay any money to the original creditor?

about the company that is helping you settle your accounts. they say they never receive it and then i sent another one and they still dont stop calling and harrass me . - Pete replies to bnb1031| 3 repliesAll states have statute of limitations for debts. Just ignore the calls or change your number. It is a scam company that buys old debts for pennies on the dollar and then they try to scare people into paying them when they really are not owed anything. Do not admit the debt. NEVER send a payment. Ignore them!
