I have been paying Portfolio for three months now. every two weeks (my pay schedule). Because I don't trust them as far as I can throw them, I didn't give them my bank info, I send an anonymous check with my name and account number on it. Well, they call me constantly, and their excuse is that since I won't give them my bank info, their computer still sees this as an unpaid debt so if I want it to stop I'd better give them said info. I DON'T THINK SO! As I said, these people started trying to contact me by calling my sister and threatening her that they were going to take her house away if I didn't pay them. HELLO?! It took me nearly an hour (my sister is very naive) to convince her that that wasn't possible, legally or otherwise. One day, I received a message from them so I called them back within minutes and talked to someone. Well, that dimwit didn't enter any info regarding the call so I got a call back the next day with a message. I asked them why the heck they were calling me again today since they called yesterday and she said "oh, she didn't enter any notes" I said, "okay, but leaving two messages in two days is harrassment" and she had the AUDACITY to tell me that this wasn't harrassment because they didn't talk to anyone. Under MASS state law, a voice message is considered CONTACT, she kept saying I was wrong. Whatever! Anway, after I talked to her, the original caller called me not 10 minutes later. I freaked out and asked him "WHAT THE EFF IS YOU PEOPLE'S PROBLEMS?" Felt good to do that. He started in on his spiel of how he could save me interest if I'd only give him the bank info. IDK, sounds a little off to me that they are trying so diligently to get my bank info...

    Send them a letter.
Notify them in writing not to contact you by phone.
They may only contact you by mail.
If you are in a debt program, they should not be contacting you at all.
Explain to the company, IN WRITING, if they contact you again, you will instigate suit for harassment.

    Hope this helps

they called again tonight (friday) asking for mohammed.  they called last monday asking for pete za.  they called twice since then also leaving no message.  they have been told repeatedly to stop calling my business.  i will continue to record and *57 them.  hopefully someone will step in and make these people quit harassing me before i snap and commit some violence against them.  215 calls in the last 15 months, i will make then stop one way or another, if our government can't do something to stop these scumbags, i will take it into my own hands.  this is a business phone number i have had for seventeen years now.  i have no idea why these idiots insist on linking it to these people they are looking for, other than that they are simply harassing me for the hell of it.  keep pushing me scumbags, i'm about ready to push back real freaking hard...........

It is a call from Portfolio Recovery Associates based in Norfolk, VA.  PRA is a collection agency dealing in junk debt.  First thing you should do is send them a "Do not Call" letter and follow it up with a debt verification letter.  They have 30 days to respond with proof you owe the debt.  Chances are, you'll never hear from them again.

By the way, PRA uses many phone numbers, your best chance to get them to stop calling is to send them a "do not call" letter.  send the letter, certified, return receipt.

These people are low life scum bags. I've never had a past due debt but these POS have called me over 100 times. I've reported them to my state prosecutor and to the feds several times, but as usual, government employees are unresponsive, useless. I've never answered a single call and never will. I'm not going to send them a letter.

I got a call from them today.  I have to tell you all, the FTC, is kinda worthless.  I've filed complaints with them, but they told me that they don't inform the companies of the complaints.  They just take them.  Another waste of a government job to me!! Where do I sign up???  Seriously, they are scum bags and should be demolished!  Thanks to all of you for posting their numbers and addresses!!! I'm gonna be a busy girl tonight!!!

Do you kno what should that "do not call" letter state? I have been getting these calls as well because of a identity fraud issue back from 2005-2006, from what I understood all of those accounts should fall off of my credit after 7 years but if they keep selling to "junk collectors" will that re-open those accounts?

Very old debts are time-barred, anyway. This means the statute of limitations has run out and they cannot recover anything from you, even if they sue you. These people know that most people do not know their rights, and expect to intimidate you into paying them something.  But, be careful that you do not ever respond by admitting that the debt is yours, not even on the phone. This is because the time limit starts all over again from the date you tell them the debt was incurred by you. The number of years varies from state to state, and I understand that for each debt, it is determined by the state of the CREDITOR, not the debtor. Some states have statutes as long as 6 and 7 years, and most of the bank cards have their addresses in one of those states. Check this website for more info: http://www.creditcards.com/credit-card-news/c ... ations-1282.php

Note: To the person who insulted everyone by typing "only reasons there callin cause ur a dirtbag who couldnt pay UR bill". No, we are not dirtbags. Some people are victims of identity theft, some of catastrophic illnesses, and others, like myself, victims of catastrophic events that caused us financial ruin, destroyed the property which the debt had actually financed, and were never compensated by those responsible. If you think this cannot happen to you, I feel sorry for you.
