Try blocking the number, or turning off your ringer. Another thing that helps is shutting down your answering machine and ignoring unknown numbers.

Re: "Have no clue who they are..."

Sure, they try to hide their identity by spoofing a phone number from another state. But their Achilles' heel is that they have to give their name at some point if they are going to make money from this scheme. This has allowed other users to identify them as First National Collection. You can see their name on the first page of this thread, which I suspect you did not notice when you posted your comment.

Now that you have their name, type "first national collection phone scams" into a search engine like Bing or Google. Soon you will have their address (610 Waltham Way, McCarran, NV 89434-6695), real phone number (775-322-0444 or 800-824-6191), owner's name (Bradley Jardon), and more. You can even find the owner's home address and his DUI arrest if you want to keep looking.

But most importantly you will find a pattern of complaints that tell you how this "business" operates, and you will see that you have nothing to fear from them. Unless, of course, you are foolish enough to agree to a "payment plan" to "settle" a "debt" that you "owe".

Armed with this knowledge, you can simply call them back at one of their real phone numbers and address the problem. (Sending a certified letter is another option, but it is a shame to waste $6 in postage on these pests.) Tell them that the hang-up calls have been a whole lot of fun for you and your family, but you know how their game works and that you will not pay them anything. Tell them you are recording their calls and will be forwarding the evidence to the police and to your attorney if they contact you again.

Follow through on the threat if necessary, but it probably won't be. They are intending to call people who are senile or stupid, and everyone else is just a risk of a lawsuit that will cut into their profit. Convince them that you are not about to be fooled, and they will go away.

I sent a cease and desist to Portfolio Recovery on a 13 year old debt from a defective product bought from Sams. Now I'm getting calls from these scum, National collection agency, just a few days later. They just keep passing the papers around and keep screwing your credit even six years after the statute of limitations. I just keep calling them back and letting them waste their time with dead air when they finally get a live operator on. Just like they do. At least it waste their time and a phone line also.

They called my spouse's personal cell and when I called back they said they would be mailing court date papers as if they were a government agency.  Besides the fact that papers are either mailed without a call or they are served by a constable they are surely delusional. XD

They can call any number....it is a bottom feeder bill collector aka scavenger collectors calling to TRY to collect on OLD bills that are NO LONGER relevant.  The bills are NO LONGER on your credit report.  DO NOT give them ANY information, PERIOD and by NO MEANS give them any money.  They called me on a bill from my ex....we broke up 15 years ago which tells you how old the bill is.  In Texas the statute of limitations for bill collection is 4 years.  Tell them that if they continue to call you will file a report with the attorney general for harassment.  Tell them if they must contact you it is to be done via the US post office.  Then hang up and be done with them.

FYI, they can't screw you over on your credit on defunct collections as long as it has been 7 years since the account became delinquent.  These people are bottom feeders who try to collect on dead bills.  With that said, never ever give these morons any information.  If they try to verify your social security number, do not do it.  I just tell them off and I tell them that I will file against them with the attorney general if they don't stop with the harassment...that usually stops them dead in their tracks.  Also, go to the FTC website and make a complaint against them and if you are on the DNC list go to their site and file a complaint there too.  One more thing you can do is to ask them to send you a written copy of the bill for verification, it is required by the FTC for them to do so.

If you are served with court papers and do not show up to court the judge will issue a default judgment and you will be liable for it.  Just show up to court and tell the judge that it is a time barred debt, as long as it is outside of the statute of limitations it is considered a time barred debt.  The judge will dismiss the case.  These collection agencies that do file with the court are hoping you don't show up.  Don't let them get their wish.

No, they aren't identity thieves.  They are debt collectors trying to collect on bills that are out of the statute of limitations....they are bottom feeding to try to scam you into paying a long since dead bill.
