Called number just after no one responded to, "Hello". The person that answered said they are with some bill collector and gave a name for someone (probably fictitious) they were trying to contact. The person said they would remove my number from their list. We'll see.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

They called, they left a silent messsage

These  people continue to call my house asking to speak with the previous homeowner. I tell them the individual passed away approximately eight years ago. (I know because he was my brother-in-law.) When I tell them he has passed on, they don't believe me. They start questioning me and turn into complete smart alecks on the phone making comments like "Ooooh reeaaaly?",  long and exaggerated as if I'm making up some story! I would like to just reach through the phone and choke the crap out of whoever it is on the other end  when they pull that kind of BS over a situation like this! And they continue to call me, and I  continue to tell them he's no longer living. I'm pretty damn certain that somebody who's been gone for that long has not accumulated some sudden outstanding debt!  And if these jerks really wanted their money, why won't they do their due diligence? Why don't they go to the public records and find the shite out for themselves if they don't believe me!  *#!@#?!@

It is too expensive to do "due diligence" for a debt that has no legal validity. But harassing you over the phone is cheap, especially when they have a computer that can dial hundreds of numbers a minute and connect only the most promising targets to one of their 3 or 4 agents.

If they are taking the time to talk to you and make fun of your relative's death, they must think you are a likely victim. You can easily convince them otherwise: Follow the advice of BigA and others on this thread, and report them (or sue them!) for violating the FDCPA. You're dealing with people who have no morals and no respect for the law, and you should treat them accordingly.

I just received a call from number 512-539-0062. I answered knowing it is a Austin Tx. I said hello no one answered just silence they hung up. I called back they answered First Financial so I in return didn't say anything and they hung up on me. What goes around comes around these people will get what is coming to them. They want to play games with me I will play games back. May the best man win.

If they won't use a valid caller id, they must be scum. Just block the number and refuse to fall for their harassment.

I answered and there was nothing but silence on the other end. I used caller ID to call them back and someone answered with the greeting, First National.

Called this morning - thought I heard someone breathing - never would say a word.
Time Waster!

Called twice left no message.

Calls, never leaves message.  ID says "Phone Call."  I did research and found it is a spoofed number.

Called them back and told them they're calling the wrong person (which is true).
They said it would take 48 hours we'll see.
I don't appreciate dead air calls especially since they are illegal.
If you don't like them calling...let them know about it.

Once you inform them to cease and desist with all attempts of contact they have to comply. Doesn't matter if the debt is within statue or not.  Just mail them a certified letter.  Junk debt collectors rarely sue.

I've received several calls, there's silence on the other end. I am on the do not call list.
