They actually called again, today, in the morning. Mom took the call, it was a Spanish speaker. Recited an incorrect and unknown address, wanted my mom's s.s#, phone number confirmation, etc.

Mom tore her a new a**hole. Asked her for a callback number that she for some reason couldn't come up with... you're the Census Bureau, what do you mean you have no call back number for your agency besides the bogus 520 on the call ID?

The moment mom went into telling her they were scam artists, that she had family in law enforcement, that I also had friends who work within federal law enforcement agencies and that we were going to have them look into the matter of these phonecalls, and that I was getting ready to write a letter of inquiry to the Census Bureau, she told my mom it wasn't necessary for us to inquire or have anyone do anything, that they would never bother her again LOL!

No calls tonight, we'll see about tomorrow and thereafter.

This call is from the Census Bureau and it is for a survey called the "American Community Survey". You should have recieved forms in the mail.....28 pages worth of questions, very personal questions including what time you leave for work in the morning. It says your address was "picked at random". Do research on this survery, there is a lot of information on the internet. The phone calls are the 2nd phase of contact....the next phase includes showing up at your home.  Flashes of Big Brother and 1984! It says you are mandated by law to answer the questions but fear should not be the a motivator for giving up your privacy!!

I did some research and found that this is a legitimate number, however it took a while to get to the root of the call.  Found out the number came from the Tucson,AZ office.  They called us at 10pm central time.  I started with the US Census KC regional office and they were very helpful.  The Jeffersonville, IN office, not so much.

Call is legitimate and from the Census Bureau.  You can verify via this web page: http://www.census.gov/npc/contactus.html

You can also see a general description of the purpose for these calls at: http://www.census.gov/epct/mso/household_surveys/004005.html

In my case they had me at my previous address (my phone number had not changed).  Upon learning that, they did not proceed with their survey.

    Skeptical
Received 2-3 calls every day for almost a month from 520-798-4152 with caller ID "Census Bureau".  I went to my local Federal Govt Building which has a Census Bureau Office, and they informed me this was not a legitimate US Census Bureau activity.  Smells suspicious to me!!

Legit over the phone is [***]
same thing...they call every day 5 x a day.  I told them to mail me stuff to fill out and they won't.  They want to ask questions about very personal information over the phone.  We've all trained ourselves not to do that.  We hear and read warnings about these types of scams from the Gov't.  Preach this!

Have received 2 calls/messages that it is the census bureau and to call them back.  I do not trust people calling on the phone for my personal info.  I sent in my written questionnaire and feel that is enough.  Too many scammers are so expert at scamming us, that I will not call it back.  I have enough problems-as we all do-to give more personal info to strangers on the phone.  If they are on the level, let them tell us in detail and openly on TV about it.

My Monther-in-Law received a phone call from (520) 798-4152; she is 84, living alone and about to have a heart attack with this people, calling and threating her!  While FTC establishes a "No Calls" number, this Census people are free to do so.  There must be a way to make them stop.

BTW, according to the Constitution, no matter what they tell you, all you have to provide is the number of people living in your home. I told them to go F themselves. Another attempt by the Obama administration to get personal data that the government ALREADY has such as income(IRS), health(we're in the 'system'), etc. etc. Ask yourselves WHY do they want this information? To build a profile on YOU and anyone else living in your home for their socialist agenda. Most likely, ACORN has their hands in this also. Oh yeah, Judge Napolitano who is on Fox quite often said he tells everyone who asks him that all they are required to give by law is the NUMBER of people in the house-period! Anything else is UNCONSTITUTIONAL under section I Article 2 of the Constitution. Go check him out at his web page.
One last thing, why WOULD the number turn up UNKNOWN if it is really from the federal government and HOW did they get my number since it is supposed to be UNPUBLISHED!

Keep getting calls from that number and two other numbers claiming to be from the US Census Bureau.  The CallerID shows up as Unknown, which is suspicious in itself.  It is to a cell phone at all times of the day and even on Saturday and Sunday.  Checked the US Census Bureau website, including the American Community Survey site and none of those telephone numbers are associated with the US Census Bureau or any of the US Census Bureau Call Centers.

I have been involved with the Census Bureau for almost 8 month now and have alway gotten a call from the same lady who came to my house twice. This is the first day anyone has called me from this number. I have not answered them or called them back. This number is not even from my state. Will call my census taker on Monday to find out if this number is a a scam. Will let you know what I find out

I just called the Census Bureau call center in Hagerstown, Maryland
1-800-392-6975 to find out if these are legitimate calls.  The supervisor explained that they are legitimate and even repeated one of the phone numbers left on the voicemail, 1-888-817-2153.  She was very helpful and transferred me to a case worker who verified that the address they are trying to reach with the phone number was in fact not my address and has removed my phone number that they are calling from the call list.
The census bureau even had a complete list of the number of times they have called my cell phone.

The Census Bureau call center phone numbers are:
    Hagerstown, MD:    1-800-392-6975
    Jeffersonville, IN:     1-800-523-3205
    Tucson, AZ:            1-800-642-0469

The American Community Survey is a lawful survey but they go by addresses, not phone numbers, so they can get an idea of the demographics in certain areas.

I suggest anyone with concerns call one of those call center numbers to get things straightened out.  I too was concerned about getting unsolicited calls on my cell phone and finding out that someone wanted to conduct a "survey" on a cell phone which would eat up the minutes.

they could have gotten your number because they are the federal gov't. it wouldn't be that hard. and any joe schmoe could do the same thing, all they would have to know is your name. and pay the $20 or whatever it is to get that information.

I'm not saying its right by any means. I'm saying its alot easier than most people think that it is.

I got a call as well.  I had to listen to the message 4 times and STILL couldn't understand through the heavy accent who was calling.  I figured that if it was the real "United States....anything" I should be able to understand their English. I will not return the call. My gut is telling me to stay away.

I polielt answered the phone 3 times over the course of 2 months - told the people I would not answer any questions and asked to have my number removed. Person said that they could only do it after the third call. I figured I had it made. One week later calls started again and after several voice mails I picked up the next attempt and figured I was polite enough and it was my turn for fun.

(Please do not take offense at this, anyone)- but I made believe that I was just discharged from a mental hospital after 15 years. I answered the questions like a looney---they asked how many bathrooms and I told them I had two in my car- front seat and back seat. Questions went like that and they finally hung up. Hopefully forever.
