- BigA replies to PedroSo, what happens when a scammer spoofs that number? Is it still "legit" then? Also, if you knew all about this number why would you take the time to look it up?
- unknownSounds like a heavy accent woman, asks about my address, and my number, and says they are from the census bureau. The Census Bureau is located in Suitland, Maryland, but this number is from Tuscan TX. This is the third time they have called me, once in Feb, once in March, and once just now April 26th.
- Caller: census bureau
- AnnVery thick hispanic accent. I couldn't understand her. I don't trust these types of phone calls.

- Mama April replies to JeanThey have "spoofed" the number. They are not with U.S. Census bureau. Asked for wrong person. Asian accent. Wanted to verify address associated with my phone. I asked if she was with census bureau and she said no, and I asked why she said she WAS at the beginning of the call. Told me I would go to jail if I did not cooperate.
I told I would never give her any personal info and to take me off the list. - Not stupid replies to Me| 7 repliesAre you for real or are you part of the scam?
- B-Edwards replies to Not stupid| 6 repliesProbably a shill. But from 2008, who knows? There are plenty of more current shills in this thread to review.
- Tygerkat replies to B-Edwards| 5 repliesIsn't the census a 10-year thing? So aren't they off by 2 years? And I thought they conducted the census by mail, not phone?
- Mike-in-MD replies to Tygerkat| 1 replyThe regular Census is done during the decadal years but the more extensive Community Survey iis done annually with a small sample of the population. See the info on it here:
https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/about.html - B-Edwards replies to Tygerkat| 2 repliesIt is more complex than that. You can go right to the US Census web site for additional confusion.
https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/are-you-in-a-survey.html
It seems there are some census questionnaires and even phone interviews in some cases that take place pretty much every year. I recall getting a questionnaire as a business owner once or twice.
There are on-going household surveys as well:
https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/are-y ... urvey-list.html
There is a link to help people know if they are being contacted by a real census rep in person or on the phone.

Since there is confusion regarding the census, scammers like to take advantage of that. As do the shills. It pays to be skeptical and careful. - Tygerkat replies to Mike-in-MDYou learn something new every day. Thanks.
- Tygerkat replies to B-EdwardsWow, you're right. Definitely confusing.
- RedFred| 1 replyI received a call earlier today and called the number back... the operator that left the voice message had no accent, however the operator that I spoke with about the "Voluntary" survey had a terribly thick Russian or Eastern European accent... so if it is truly the Census Bureau they can send me a paper survey to fill out...
- Caller: US Census Burean
- Call type: Survey
- Can't fool me replies to Me| 1 replyIt's not. Point 1, the census bureau would not be calling cell phones. Point 2, the consumer price index has nothing to do with census. Add on the fact that they all have heavy accents
- NormReceived a message stating they were from the US Census Bureau and requested I contact them. When I called they tried to save me money.
