- BigA replies to Renee| 2 repliesThey must abide by the FDCPA when collecting debt. I guess the bigger question is why are you here? You obviously know who they are and why they are calling. Therefore you know everything there is to know about the number that called you. So why did you decide to look this number up? Were you expecting to learn something new?
- Chaz| 1 replyThey are calling about outstanding student loans. I have about $50K in loans from Great Lakes. They are REAL. They are a legit company.
- Caller: Great Lakes
- Call type: Debt collector
- Kat replies to ChazJust because you have loans from Great Lakes doesn't mean THIS CALLER is legitimate. And by the way, why are you here? You know who called you.
- Tygerkat replies to ReneeSo who are they if I don't have a loan with them?
- JRIt is a legit number for Great Lakes, however the caller is not legit. The Great Lakes number is being used to mask the call of a scammer. They use lots of local numbers too. If you want/need to speak with them, call them yourself, do not answer the call.
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- refeycul666This number recently called me, but didn’t leave a message. Joke’s on them because unless I know who’s calling I don’t pick up, and i’m certainly not returning any calls from someone who doesn’t leave a message. I’m far too busy to deal with someone who’s most likely just a scam artist.
- Concerned| 3 repliesI just got a voice mail from this number saying they had some important information about my student loan. 1) I've never had a student loan 2) No one's ever listed me on their student loan 3) they called my brand new cell phone number, a number I haven't given anyone yet. Seems pretty suspicious to me.
- Mary replies to ConcernedThey are Great Lakes and they are attempting to collect student loans.
- BigA replies to Concerned| 2 repliesNew Number
All phone numbers are recycled. No one gets rid of a number without a good reason since it a pain in the butt to notify everyone. So now you know why the former owners got rid of that number.
Great Lakes address can easily be found on the internet for you to send them a certified, return receipt "not me" letter. After receipt of that letter if they call you again, you can sue them. - georgeD584| 1 replyStudent loan services. They’re legit, but the automated machine doesn’t leave any type of message.
- Caller: Great Lakes Higher Education
- Call type: Debt collector
- Kat replies to georgeD584So why are you here? People come to this site when they DON'T KNOW WHO CALLED. You obviously do.
- Jim laomThey are fron great lakes co. And they handle college loans
- Caller: 800 236 4300
- DoNotCallRegistryIsUseless| 1 replyMeh, these people are not legit. I do not have student loans.
- Call type: Telemarketer
- Arrow replies to DoNotCallRegistryIsUselessYour username is incorrect, The Do Not call registry isn't useless. It also doesn't apply to debt collectors, legitimate or not. It's only for telemarketers.
- LA replies to Not born yesterday, MinnesotaThey just called my house and it's a Sunday, and it was 12:30pm. So that doesn't match their hours.
- laSaid they were calling from AT&T about my service and unauthorized access. I didn't answer. I also used to work for ATT so I know this is not there number. ATT if they do call you will provide you with a direct call back number to a fraud office. Only an automated service telling me to press one. Not a valid call.
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- la replies to BigA| 1 replyThis number is a scam. It appears according to other responder's this outfit is obtaining public accessible information about people and attempting to use this as a scare tactic. Not cool.
- BigA replies to laSo what does that have to do with my post?
- BigAUsing the information that CWG40 has posted on page 18:
You need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation (by law they have to go back to the original creditor to prove you owe the debt), cease and desist calling, or "not me" letter (this will be the best money that you have ever invested). Also send it first class mail in case no one will sign for it. Make a notation of that fact at the bottom of the letter. You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to. Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment. If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it. Use these web sites to find an attorney in your state that will probably take the case on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket up front): http://www.consumeradvocates.org/

Because:
It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it. You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

I have my student loans through them. They are completely legit, and I've never experienced any hostility whatsoever.
