This is absolutely a SCAM.  USCIS does not, ever, make calls like this.  If there is a problem in your case, they do things by MAIL.  Certainly, anything that is serious enough to enter a deportation order against you would ONLY be done through formal filing and you would receive a letter advising you to appear at a USCIS office for any type of proceeding.   Also as another poster mentioned, the 800 # (USCIS Customer Service Center) is an intake facility only and they NEVER make outgoing calls.

Its a scam, call the numbers on the back of your card(s)  do not accept cold calls like this! They should be able to tell you the numbers on your card if its legitimate! If they can't, its a scam!

Any extortion calls made claiming to be a visa or passport etc is also a scam! And I'm seeing listing for collection calls on this numbers also!

    (2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;

    A Collection Agent May Not…

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

    Misrepresent Him or Herself

A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

    Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

    Use Abusive or Threatening Language

A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

    Publish a Bad Debt List

Publishing the consumer’s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

    Contact By Embarrassing Media

A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector’s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

    Contact a Consumer at Work

A collection agent may not communicate with consumers at their place of employment after being told this is unacceptable or prohibited by the employer.

    Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

A debt collector may not demand any amounts not permitted under an applicable contract or as provided under law.

Contact a Consumer Represented by an Attorney

A collection agent may not contact a consumer after it learns the consumer is represented by a lawyer.

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

If a consumer sends a written §1692g response within 30 days, the collection agent may not communicate with the consumer until it mails the consumer the requested verification of original creditor's name and address.

    Communicate With Third Parties

A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer’s debts with third parties other than the consumer’s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

    Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.

Thanks for posts on this forum, would like to post my scenario for benefit of future readers.

NOTE THAT THESE CALLS THOUGH APPEAR TO BE ORIGINATED FROM 800-375-5283 IN THE CALLER ID WHICH IS GENUINE USCIS CUSTOMER CARE NUMBER, THESE ARE SCAM CALLS!!!

Got call from a USCIS agent named 'Sean' and 'John Spencer' this morning from number 800-375-5283, stating I did not update the USCIS Alien number in i94 form at the Port of Entry when I entered US first time. He was saying, American high commission in India sent several letters to my Indian address and filed a Criminal complaint against me stating I didn't update the Alien number in i-94 form.

The fact is Alien number column is on back side of the I-94 form which says, this page for govt use only.

Further, he was asking me to have my parents in India and pay the penalty $789.00 in American High Commission in New Delhi,India to Anan Kishore within 12 hours. He said cops will come in next 2 hours to deport me back to India.

I asked, give me an option to pay in US. He first refused the option and later he asked me to pay using WESTERN UNION MONEY TRANSFER in next 1 hr to settle and clear the issue.

I got doubt here when he gave WESTERN UNION option. I believe USCIS won't ask anyone to pay the penalty if any using WESTERN UNION. Also he was asking me to settle everything within next hours and also he did not allow me to call anyone and asked me not to mute the phone call as it is a call from USCIS (Government call) and it is getting recorded.

I asked him to provide some time, but asked me to settle within 2 hours. Initially their language was ok, but later it was rude. They threatened me to pay or going to ask cops to deport me soon.

During the conversation he told my DOB and few my Personal details and asked me to share Visa details and Passport details for validation.
Though I did not make any payment, I'm a bit concerned of an identity theft with these details.

    DO  NOT SHARE ANY DETAILS!!!

Well today I also got a call from that number. A guy with heavy Indian accent was asking me in a very rude way as to why my A no was missing. He disconnected the call when I asked about what exactly he was looking for and I said that I was unaware of any such number. I gave a call back to USCIS to check what had happened and the first thing that they told me was that they cannot make any calls. It is only through appointment. If you schedule an appointment with USCIS then only they will call you and would never happen out of the blue.

Be aware people, and do not give out any information. If you are here legally then no one can do anything against you.

I received a call from 800-375-5283 and they cross verified my passport details ....
And asked me about my alien number and then later asked that i have to pay a fee $741 as a penalty .
I fell for the trap but got a suggestion not to pay for it.
I am worried about that they have my Details and what should I do about it?
If you got any suggestions please update about what should I do

Exact same thing what "Dubbu" mentioned happened with me.The amount asked was $741 and was asked to pay it being on call (they were on hold for more than an hour and a half)

Although luckily i ended up not paying with some excuse as they mentioned Western Union which got me suspicious, as something similar happened with me in UK.
So, with some Drama and show-off they offered to call me back on Monday morning to make the payments.

I am worried about the identity theft.
They have my details and that's what is making me worried.

Can someone help in terms of where to complain or whom to report the issue.
Should I be calling up any number or govt agency to register the complaint and avoid any identity theft issue?

I would call USCIS and tell them what happened.  They will be able to give you advice on what to do.  You may also want to call your bank and tell them to put fraud alerts on all your accounts.

    Thank you Elspeth,
I did that already and asked them to block my card. So just in case if they have my other details too, they wont be able to use my money.
What I am worried with the whole incident is "Identity Theft ".

Called up 911 as its federal crime to claim to be a govt official when you are not.
Thus an office just dropped down and took the details and asked me to file a complaint with ":Attorney General office" and /or Immigration Office on Monday morning

This whole thing has shaken me and made me worried about -
    1. How did they have all my passport details.?
    2. US and Home country address?

Thank you in advance guys for all your help,

I should have added yesterday that if you already have a SSN, you should contact at least one of the credit agencies - you can do it online - Experian, Equifax, TransUnion - and ask them to put fraud alerts on your files also.

I received a call from a number (1911). The person who called knew my name and also the company where i work. First he told me that he was calling from State of Authority and asked me to check the number being displayed. I said its 1911. Then he asked me if I knew the importance of this number. I said yes this is an emergency contact number for US. He then asked me where I was currently. I said I am in my office. Then he told me that there was some problem with my immigration documents because of which a legal notice has been issued under my name. I started to panic since this was my first encounter. He said that don’t panic we will help you out. He asked me to step out of the office without telling anyone as I would be fired from my job if my employers came to know about this legal notice. I was literally scared and disconnected the call. Then I spoke to my team before going out and they figured it out as a fake call. In the meantime that person kept calling me and I disconnected it again and again. Then again that person called me from another number (18003755283) and one of my colleagues picked up the call. He narrated the same incident to my colleague. Then my colleague asked him to email the legal notice and on listening this that person simply disconnected the call and never called back again.

DO NOT PROVIDE DOB, passport number, address on job portals. I realized that I created a profile on Naukari.com an indian website for job hunting and next day I got this call.

The same crap story I was driving he told me in fake accent I caught that its a desi guy telling me to pull my car from highway and talk to him. I realized that nobody from USIC will ask to pull down car then i got call after coming back home and realized that this guy is fake.

I went to naukari.com and realized there are few fake employers who are stealing our personal details.

    I got a call from the same number (800 -375-5283 ) today - sep 2-, 2013.

I was driving to work when he called - said he was from USCIS and there was a legal complaint against me from the Indian High Comission since I did not write down my Alien number on the bottom half of the 1-94 card that we hand over to the officer at port of entry. He gave me a good spiel about how they want to make sure they have all the information to make sure where I am, what I am doing since I am not a US citizen.
I asked for his name - gave it as Alex Cooper.
I called back the number just to make sure it is not fake - I was shocked to hear a legitimate robot voice saying I had called USCIS - press 1 for english and 2 for spanish.

A couple of things threw me a red flag so I didn't respond with personal information -
    1. He asked me where my documents where - I said they were at home - he asked me how far away from home are you ? ( I have never had officials ask me those kind of questions ) he went on "okay how far away are you from work ? " get to the point - what do you want me to do next ?
    2. He asked me if I have access to internet right now ?  I said no - (by now I needed more time to make sure I have more time to check out this number ). He asked me when I can I have access to internet - I said in one hour's time - I 'll be at work. He said okay I'll call you back in an hour.

I googled his number and found this thread - its a sigh of relief. I didn't pick up his call again.

I need to know how to check with uscis that everything is okay on my file.

Hi-  I got the similar call from 800-375-5283 from a guy called Steve Marsh. He told me all his same old story and later on transferred the call to a guy called John Spencer. Both useless and rude guys and after 1 hour of wasting my time, they asked me about the money. I told them not sure if I have it. This is when they disconnected the call. I already contacted my attorney who verified that every thing is ok with my records. I am very certain that they hacked naukri.com account because they told me some incorrect information which is only available over there.
These people are shame to the community and I hope that that they will be behind bars one day.
