My elderly mom got two calls from this number today and has no account with Citibank.  It's a scam.  So why are so many people on this site saying it isn't?  No doubt because they are the phishers themselves.  Great advice: If you get any kind of call from someone claiming to be your bank, hang up and call the phone number on the back of your actual credit card or on your statement.  That's the best way to be sure you're not being scammed.

It's legit. I had made an on-line purchase which admittedly looked odd, and the seller told me it was rejected. Then Citibank called from that number about the possible fraud and I assured them it was ok. Seller re-submitted and it went through.

    ADVISORY

    Readers:
    Be Safe, Not Sorry
Rather than believe the posts in this thread, or the words of an anonymous caller,
if you are notified of a problem with your card,

CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD

Even though the number in this thread might belong to your card issuer, the scammers can easily spoof what appears on your CallerID, and attempt to get your precious ID and card data!

Read the above again, for understanding!

    Be Safe, Not Sorry!

CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD

It's Citibank. Automatic fraud detection kicked in today when I tried purchase a $700 dollars phone.
I ended up getting an email, text, and phone message from THIS NUMBER.

The message even mentioned the last four digits of my card and provided me with a case number.

Got a call from this number on my cell phone. I have a Citibank account, but the problem is they don't have my current cell number, only my home and work numbers. Called the number on the back of my card, and, after waiting on hold, trying to have a conversation with someone who didn't speak understandable English, waiting on hold some more, and finally getting someone in the U.S., found out that there was no problem with my card at all. And I confirmed that, no, they didn't have my current cell number.

So thanks, scammers, for getting me all worried and wasting 45 minutes of my time!

So Slim is right, JUST CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD!

I received a call from this number, and I'm still not 100% sure whether it was legit. I do have a Citi card, and I did make an overseas purchase that triggered their fraud system. I also received an email and called them directly to verify this.

HOWEVER, when I received the call from this number, they wanted to verify my account using the *bank account number I have linked to my Citi card*, and did not provide any other alternatives to verify, which I thought was very fishy. So I hung up and called Citi directly. They provided other verification methods that I was more comfortable with, cleared the charge, and all is well.

If it IS a scammer, they somehow knew to call me when I actually did have a fraud alert on my card, which would be kind of scary.

This is NOT a legitimate working phone number for Citibank. Two customer care representatives (1 a customer care rep, 1 a customer care specialist) and a Fraud Department representative all verified for me that the number is NOT LEGIT.  It used to be, but they stopped using the number a while back.
Like Slim mentioned above, CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD (or go online and do a live chat with a customer care rep).

IT IS LEGIT. I received a text from 956-86 stating someone attempted to charge my citi card at The Barretstown in the amount of $1.14. I was hesitant to call back the 8003866624 number provided but since I have not used the Citi for several months already, and had no way to check it online,  I called the number. It is an 800 number so you dont get charged calling them. I did not enter the case number provided in the text so the automated answering machine located my account by using the phone number of the phone I am using to call them, then I was directed to a customer care person. It was true, someone in Ireland tried to use my citi. They cancelled my citi and promised to send a new card. Note: If you are wary it could be a scam, then use the phone you provided them when you applied for the card. Despite not giving any info, the automated answering machine of citi will be able to locate your account. It will tell you the details and you will know it is legit.

How, in what world, is this on the up and up?  I don't even HAVE a credit card.  Not one.  Any post on this number saying it's "legit" is completely full of crap.  It's obviously a continued pursuit by the scam artists attached with this phone number to make people without common sense to fall into the trap.  The gentlemen and ladies who say to call the number on the back of your card, if you even HAVE a card, are correct.  Do that, please.  Do not call this number back and give them your information.  EVER!  One of my side hobbies is to screw with these scam artists and I'd really actually like to thank you horrible, horrible scamming idiots for calling me and now bringing this number to my attention.  I'm sure one of you idiots will read this and understand that much like the great "Macho Man" Randy Savage I will drop the proverbial big elbow on you morons.  One more thing, scamming idiots, YOU have to be very careful who you try to scam because sometimes...just sometimes...you call someone who is bigger, badder and has a LOT OF TIME on their hands.  You'll be hearing from me.  Have a good day.  MWAH!  Love ya!

This is legitimately Citibank Card's Fraud Early Warning Department.
They left voicemail informing me my card had a fraudulent charge. They gave my full name and the last 4 digits of my card. I was still leary. I called the number on the back of my card instead of the number on the voicemail after seeing this thread. They confirmed there was a fraudulent charge on my card. My card was deactivated and I received my replacement card 2 days later.
Citibank should use a Caller ID that's shows Citibank and not 800 Service.

Totally legitimate phone call from CitiBank's fraud/security department.  I had used a convenience check in a large amount, and they were merely calling to confirm the transaction.

Keep in mind, just because the number is legit, doesn't mean the caller is!

Scammers spoof legitimate numbers to trick people into a false sense of security to answer their calls and attempt to get money or personal information from you.
This is why no one will encourage others to report of legitimate numbers, as they only confuse people into believing it is a legit call when a scammer has called them and they come here to find out about the call.

If it is a legitimate call, then anyone receiving a call would know WHY they got a call from this number, right?
So what would be a reason to come and post about it to a site designed to share information about UNKNOWN callers, such as Telemarketers, Scammers and Debt Collectors?

If your call was legit,  telling about it won't  be any comfort to those who may get a spoofed call from some scammer!

Scott, I don't know your elderly Mother's situation, but I got a call from this number myself 10 minutes ago, and it WAS TOTALLY LEGITIMATE!  But yes, I agree with your advise, when in doubt, call the number on the back of your credit card.  Thank you.

So knowing there are scammers spoofing these numbers and there are 36 pages about both, why would you decide it was a good idea to add to the confusion of legitimacy by posting again about your legit call that is of no comfort to those who receive scam calls?
