If you're not going to call and ask like CelticDragon told you, then be afraid. Know how simple it is? One, look at the back of your JC Penny's card-there should be a PHONE NUMBER. Call that.

It seems to me that debt collectors are notorious for calling outdated numbers.

People keep saying this is JC Penney's debt collections department. It may be or may not be. They are owned by Synchrony Bank, which also owns Walmart credit cards, Car Care One, and a host of other entities.

Started receiving these calls every day on my cell phone making it sound like they are calling on behalf of J.C. Penney and there is an issue.  Ignore the calls or if you talk to them, don't give any personal information but feel free to mess with them.  As another person stated, it pisses them off. :)

Synchrony Bank is now the provider for a large number of store branded credit cards and is very aggressive about late payments. If you have one of their cards, you should have received a letter from your store card alerting you that Synchrony was taking over the management of your card. If you receive a call from them and you are suspicious, it would be a good idea to either log on to your account to check it's status or call the number on the back of your card with your questions about this caller.

I have a JCP account. But:  A) I have not used it, and not had a balance since my last payment in early 2015. I just confirmed this via the JCP credit website; B) I only provided my landline number (I keep one specifically for  use on things like this where I don't want calls on my cell) yet they are calling my cell. Put that together, and it reads SCAM! Even if it is JCP calling, that means they somehow acquired my cell number, and and can only be calling to try and sell me something.

I didn't receive a call, but an email telling me to call this number for synchrony bank for my JC Penney card, telling me to update my address and pay my past due balance.   I don't have a past due balance. My address has not changed, and I havE never given JCP OR Synchrony Bank my email address.  Also, the phone number is not the one o my card.  Huge scam.  I have recently receive a lot of scams regarding my credit even though I have a block on my credit report for past fraudulent activity.

I have received several calls from this number daily. I haven't had a JC PENNEY CARD since the mid 70'S and the last several times that I have shopped there, they always ask if I would like to apply for a card, my reply would always be if I had to charge it I don't need the product.

They've called me many many times over the course of a few days. At least 20 a day from an unknown number. My coworker answered and they left a number to call back. 1-800-527-5180. I called and everything seemed suspicious. I think they are put to scam people.

Received a call on November 12 which Caller ID showed was coming from a 937 area prefix, which is the prefix for our county, but the name of the caller was listed as "unavailable." I don't normally answer calls that are not identified by at least a number or a name, but my wife was waiting for a local doctor's referral and was taking a nap, so I decided to chance it since the area prefix was 937. A woman possibly of Pakistani descent asked to speak with my wife. When I told her that she was taking a nap, she advised me that we owed JCPenny $58 dollars, and asked how we intended to pay for it. Since my wife pays the bills I was totally clueless as to whether or not this was a legitimate call. I kept hearing this occasional beep and recognized that as an indication that our conversation was being recorded, although I was not made aware of it at the time. The woman was very friendly, and since my wife was not available, asked for her call 1-800-527-3369 to settle this matter. I was very suspicious of this woman, and was cautious to keep the conversation as short and unusable as possible. When my wife awoke later on, I asked her about the $58 dollars and she said that was the amount she had failed to pay JCPenny. I told her not to call the 1-800 number, for I was certain this was a scam. But it does give cause to wonder where the bogus callers are getting such accurate information in the first place, unless there is a ring of people working inside JCPenny accounting that are either making the calls themselves, or are handing the information over to others

This is a scam and not JC Penney.  I thought maybe I forgot a payment but I logged on the official page and I am up to date.  I blocked my number and called the 800# they left on voice mail.  The automated recording said my account number matches the number I am calling from (funny I blocked my number) and to enter the last 4 digits of my SS number.  Nice try THIEVES!  Watch out folks if there is an issue with any credit card account you have,  wait for something to come to you through the US MAIL where if  these scammers try and commit fraud it's a federal offense.   This is why they do it from other countries on the telephone.   SCAM SCAM SCAM... I repeat SCAM this is NOT JC PENNEY
