- Anonymous| 3 repliesI received a mail from PO Box 297812 Ft Lauderdale Florida 33329-7812 with the exactly the same information. The letter was printed on an American Express looking letter head. It looked very official. It showed the last 4 digit of my credit card, a valid looking transaction and an obvious looking fake transaction. It then tells me to call 18008249289 or collect 336-393-1111 to confirm the charges. The letter is signed by R. Bauer, American Express Worldwide Fraud Prevention.
I called the 1-800-824-9289 at 5:45 pacific. I got an automated receptionist telling me to punch a number to have a "good time"! I hanged up. I thought I dialed the number wrong so I tried again. I got the same machine message. I hanged up again.
I went to my Amex online account to confirm the quoted charge in the letter. The charges were not there.
I googled the number and saw this page and others indicating that this number is fraudulent (perpetrates fraudulent scheme). I agree this number and the letter I received was fraudulent.
I also agree with the other posters from other sites. Don't call this number. If you want to call Amex, call the number on the back of your card.
If you are paranoid, cancel the card or get a new card.
I also noticed, from other sites discussing this number, there are posters that claim to be with Amex and states the number is a valid Amex fraud verification line. I suspect these are the same people who are perpetrating the fraud. - MA replies to D| 7 repliesWhy google when you can just look it up on AmEx? Nice that people called it a fraud without doing a simple 30 second check.
http://search.americanexpress.com/amex/?q=fraud%20verification - HarrieI recvd a call ( 2 different times ) from this phone number...stating they
are the Amer Exp Security Group, etc... call and enter your 15 digit card number...or call the number on the back of your card..
This cannot be safe, nor on the up and up,,,I think they are randomly calling homes and leaving the same messages. I do not have an American Express Card, and I never had one..so,,,why the 2 phone calls, if they are legit?? - rich| 3 repliesI got a couple phone calls from 18009923404 and 18008249289. Both numbers are valid for the American Express Security Group because I called back to AMEX using the credit card number and they verified the numbers and the fraud charges on my account.

- Arthur replies to rich| 2 repliesI got a message from American Express tonight saying to call this number due to a fraudulent charge. I called and they had all my information (previous charges, name, address, etc.). They said they were canceling my card and are sending a new one. Then I started to worry that maybe this was some elaborate scheme and that maybe they weren't American Express. So I got the fraud number off the AMEX website and called them too. They confirmed that I was indeed talking to American Express and that a replacement card was on its way. I think this 1-800-824-9289 is a valid AMEX fraud line number.
- joe replies to ArthurThis number is to the american express account security group they are the dept that handles fraud attempt and decline verification on your acct in other words when you are sitting at a register and your amex gets declined and or a please call message is sent to the merchant you are shopping at because of this group you receive a call usually with in a day or so to verify that it was you or if your card was stolen. if you have never had a card you may want to check your credit report or if you had a card then maybe someone is trying to use an old card of yours but it is a legit number.
- PZI just called this number and it is Amex. They had charges that i tried to charge and were declined earlier today based upon fraud speculation. They knew the place i used it and told me the reason fraud filters declined my card. If this was a scam, then they also know your account history and when you used your card and that is above and beyond elaborate.
They also said in the Voice mail they left me to dial either this number on the number on the back of my card.- Caller: American Express Fraud Services
- borisI called the number on the back of my card and I was asked about the same transaction as in the email. Also the email says "You may also call the number on the back of your card and when prompted by our system, please enter your 15 digit American Express Card number. This will automatically transfer you to our Account Security Group." I don't know of any phishermen that would write that in an email.
- Alice replies to TonyThe 800 number they ask you to call is also published on the American Express website. I called and in fact it really was American Express, checking a possible fraudulent charge. It's too bad their recording sounds so phishy! I was ignoring it for weeks before I finally sat down and investigated, only to find out it was legit!
- KrisI received this call this morning, and I called the number on the back of my card instead of the number in the message. There was no fraud on my account, however, AmEx said it was a legitimite number. I have only had my home telephone number for about a year, and I still get calls all of the time for the previous owners of the number, so most likely the call I got was really intended for someone else. Other people might be getting the call in error for a similar reason -- some people are really lazy about updating the information when they move or get a new telephone number. Credit card companies will track you down and update your address when you move if you fail to do it, but your telephone number rarely gets updated automatically.

- Ashley| 3 repliesI received a voice mail from this number telling me to call the American Express Account Service Group about possible fraud activity on my account. I had cancelled this Am Ex cards a year or more ago. I was curious, so I called the number and the rep asked me for my card number. I said I didn't have it (which was true) and she asked if I felt comfortable giving my full SS number. I said no, so she just took my name instead. She said she saw where my account had previously been cancelled but that someone had used my account number on a dating site. The payment did not go through (since the card is cancelled). I asked how this person could have gotten my accoutn number and she said the person likely entered in random numbers. It was interesting to know they still report fraud activity to people of cards that have been cancelled.

- santa jaws replies to D| 3 repliesYou don't know what you are talking about. This is a legit number for the Am Ex Fraud Alert Center. I had my account compromised and because I read your misinformation I almost didn't check that there was a problem with the account. Before you post make sure you have all of the facts!!!
- ok replies to BThat is bs. Whatever you do people, call the number on the back of your credit card -- you know that is a legit # and then American Express can tell you if they had contacted you or not.
- Rob replies to Ashley| 2 repliesAlmost certainly a fake number. I'm guessing they will ask you for your account information when you call. Then, that information will be on the street and being used to buy stuff before you start your next sentence.
Always call the number on the back of your card, or go directly to www.americanexpress.com
I noticed that there are some posts on here saying "100% legit number". Those are nearly certainly from the "ring" who is responsible for the attempted fraud. - Bob replies to Rob| 1 replyI got this call three times in a row on my work number. It has to be a fake number, I don't even have an AMEX card!! Come on, wake up people, how many legit credit card companies would ask you to call a number back and punch in your card numbers? Might as well give them all your banking numbers, and send your birth certificates and passports as well..
- bkDespite the people implying otherwise, it is legit. The same number was displayed on my account web page. But I do suggest calling back the number on back of card either way.
- AdieuI've had a prepaid phone for all of 48 hours when these weirdos called me. No number disclosure anywhere online and maybe 4-5 friends had this number, with none of them working for telemarketing or posting it anywhere.
Anyway, I get a call from them on the FOURTH OF JULY, AT SIX IN THE MORNING. And then they have the courtesy to not say anything into the phone, either.
What gives? - Orange800 824-9289 is not a fraud. that is Amex number of their fraud department. i receieved a call from that number saying that i have a suspicious activity and they asked to call back. i called back the number on the back of my card and confirmed with Amex that 800 824-9289 is not a fraud.

- TrentGot a call on my cell phone from the number- ignored it as I didn't recognize the number. Got the automated message in a voicemail regarding a fraud alert. I called the number on the BACK OF THE CARD and they did verify that it WAS American Express that had called originally regarding a questionable charge (which I DID in fact make). So, YES THIS NUMBER AND MESSAGE ARE LEGITIMATE. However, I still recommend always calling the number on the back of whatever credit card is in question, not some ambiguous 800 number that you don't know.

- LisaGot an email from AMEX when I started my new job a few weeks ago and disregarded it until now... My caller ID at work showed up as a 612 area code(this is a common area code for my location in the Twin Cities). This number called 4 times at my WORK phone and left repeated automated voicemails asking to call back an 800# to verify recent charges on my account. I don't own an AMEX card, let alone a credit card of any kind. I called back the 800 number and the lady said I probably received the message incorrectly and that it was meant for a different employee, but the message was probably sent to a general mailbox which somehow ended up at mine? Does not sound legit to me, they asked for my CC# a few times before I even talked to someone. Press # to talk to op right away.
