Had a call this morning.  16 bucks in illegitimate charges last night.  I called back at this number and went through the whole spiel.  They had the wrong security code and I had to give the last 4 of my social to change it.  Then I talked to another woman who handled sending me my new card.

After this exchange I was a little leery so I called the number on the back of the card to confirm there was a fraudulent charge and it was confirmed.  I know I'm another scammer or something according to the people in this thread.  Anyway, I would just ALWAYS calls the number on your card.  It will get you to the same place eventually and is more safe.

Recieved call from this number, they claimed they were call from AMEX fraud about someone trying to make a purchase on my card. Was not to sure about this since I had not use card in a year, so I called the number on the back on my card and got thru to customer service and they confirmed that it was an actual call from AMEX. So I fell better after I call them myself. They have sent me a new card via UPS that I had to sign for.

It is a good number. I missed two calls from this number on my cell phone, and no message was left.  So I checked here to see what you folks said.

Learning it may be AMEX (and as I've using it a lot these past couple of weeks), I logged on to the AMEX site and right there on the main screen next to my card information, was an alert that the Fraud Department needed to be called at this 800 number. I called the number (as I just mentioned, after checking the AMEX website) and cleared up the issue (which, by the way was't fraud, but I am happy they are checking these things out for me).

I received a call from this number and they went through the security screening and issued a new card. I was a little nervous so I looked it up here, then read some of the posts and was really uncomfortable. Call AE customer service and yes it their Faud Alert, they verified everything that transpired in the conversation with this number.

You don't have an AMEX card that you know of.  These folks are in the fraud prevention department.  If someone were to obtain your personal information and open a card in your name without your knowledge, these are the people who would call to ask you about it.

1-800-824-9289 is a legit AMEX Fraud prevention #. Some redneck charged over $1,000 at WALMART.COM. I don't shop there and never will. Bunch of dang union busters.

I just got a call from this number but was busy so couldn't answer. No message was left on my machine. When I redialed I got an automated voice telling me that it was American Express account security group and asking me to say or put in my 15 digit account number.  I, of course, did not key or speak anything, and promptly hung up. I have an American Express card and have been contacted several times before to check on possible fraudulent charges and it was always either a person or a recorded message on my machine saying that it was AMEX and that they were checking card activity etc. and leaving a number for me to call. Why not this time? And I really don't feel that any company's account security group should be asking me to key in my entire card number. If this was American Express I am not too thrilled with this last contact experience.

I take back my former comment. I got called again today, but this time a message was left and I called the number on the back of my card. My card was hit on line to the tune of $2,500.  Mea Culpa American Express- you're the best.

I called the number on the back of my AMEX card and sure enough they had a couple of charges made in another country that they needed to verify.  This was legit.

It is American Express calling to verify a suspect charge.  Unfortunately, they said that the recorded messaging system they use does not always leave a message before it hangs up.  Hence the repeated calls from 800-824-9389 with no way to identify the caller other than the caller ID.  And if you are like me you don't call suspect numbers to find out what they want.

I to was concerned when I checked this site for the number that called me.  I called AMEX phone number listed on the back of my card.  YES, there were several attempts to use my AMEX card. One was turned down and the other one had made it to my account.  After answering a couple questions to verify my ID, my card was canceled and a new card will arrive on the 19th.  The charge on the account was reversed.  I was VERY grateful that the security department at AMEX caught this and had contacted me.
