- Maggie Bostick replies to DebbieI am a tax Preparer and my customer get the letters all the time. I usually do a conference call and call in with my customers. It is not fraud and it doesn't mean you need to just send them money right away. You need to find out why they are saying you owe whatever you owe. It may be something that was done incorrectly on your account. if you want to check you can start with the basic IRS number and they will escalate you up to the department that handles whatever issue you have. Have the letter in front of you because they will ask you for the notice #. 1.800.829.1040.
- Maggie Bostick replies to Mr LauThat's weird.... because I am a tax preparer and I call that number with my tax customers all the time to help them understand what happened with their account that caused them to owe. A lot of time I just have to do an amended return and it sorts out the problem.. but sometimes they may actually owe especially if they forgot to tell me about a w2 form some job they worked. The Department is called Under Reporter...that is for CP2000 notices. Could be a different Department if you have a different notice number...Hope This helps.
- Omar karshe replies to KeithThis is the only IRS contact number when it comes to owe money 800-829-1040
Any other number is a scam. My brother in law recieved the same letter and the funny part is his social security number on it is correct. So, I tried to call the number they have listed 800-829-8310 and its voice mail goes like this is the IRS, call us during business hours Monday through Friday. It sounds legit but when you call the number and an Indian guy answer it on Monday, you know what time it is. lol . The reason I'm sure it is a scam, the money he owed is outrageous amount which is impossible. - Melonie replies to PaulaHi Paula
My husband and I received a letter today the same as you did back in 2018. Is this a scam? - Hate scammers replies to MichelleExactly! I just got my federal return less than a month ago which was $7,000 and today I received a letter with the same phone number saying that I owed $3000! If I owed that right now, why didn't they take their $3000 and give me a $4000 return? Duh, a scam for sure!
- ILINE RICHARDS| 1 replyI received a letter from IRS and a phone call saying legal action is going to be taken against me regarding my 2018 tax return. The letter was signed by Glen Kilkenny. Does Glen Kilkenny work with IRS? Should this letter have a Govt. seal on it? is this a scam/
- Caller: robo
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- BigA replies to ILINE RICHARDSI bet I know who could answer that for you. The actual IRS. Why I bet you could even go to their website and look up their known, published phone number and call them.
- pakI got letter from them with this number 800 829-8310 twice saying that I owe taxes for 2018

- Dumb BlondeYes, I received a letter in the mail for a proposed refund & I wanted to make sure they send it to me not my deceased husband. I called and they had all the info. Then I got nervous because when I got the call back number it had SPAM? IRS & didn't think twice about it not just having SPAM? but why did it have IRS name appearing too. Well, she had all info including social security & address but I wouldn't give her mine because I said I am lerry now about the call. She had all info date mailed & amount but still felt off. Oh well, I will see if I am really a dumb blonde by calling 1-800-829-8310 & having someone call me back on my phone. Now what do I have to do to correct this mistake?

- Shanna Valigura| 1 replyThis letter states my husband and I owe 3,999 back from 2019 on vehicles that repossessed 5 to 7 years ago. Looked up this number it's not legit.
- Caller: It was a letter staed they were the IRS
- LWWe received a certified letter with this phone number as the contact. It is, in fact, a legitimate IRS phone number, though they have not called us -- only sent notices thru the USPS. However, I would respond in any way (ie press "1" or "hold to speak to someone") calling from this number because scammers can change the caller ID to read anything they want it to read. Wait for a letter from the IRS. They will never call you unless they've already tried to reach you by mail and have sent a certified letter. Always call them directly by dialing the number listed on your notice yourself.
- BigA replies to Shanna ValiguraI'm not sure how you would owe taxes on repo'd vehicles in the first place. Possibly they sold them for less than the loan balance, but then they would have had to send you a 1099-C which you would have had to report on your 1040 for that year.
- AdriannaI received a letter in may 2021 stating that i owed taxes for the year 2019. I knew that wasn’t possible.. i mailed back in some of my w2s to prove to them i didn’t owe nothing, then i received a second letter in august. basically just said that i owed money & never addressed the information i sent in, they still wanted their money. said i could mail a check or call the 800-829-8310 number. i logged into my actual IRS account on the irs.gov site and it said i didn’t owe them anything at all. so i 100% believe this is definitely a scam. glad i didn’t send any money or any further information.

- SameLetter| 1 replyI received the same letter from the IRS, I just created my account with the IRS to see my past tax document, due balances, which were all zero owed to the IRS. Very Upsetting that they had my social security. I would put a credit freeze with all three credit bureau if you received this fraud letter.
- BigA replies to SameLetterYou are upset because the IRS has your SS#? I'm a little confused about that. Did you think that they don't know your SS#? Yes, if you set up an account then the IRS will send you a letter. It will come in an official IRS envelope and on an official IRS letterhead. But hey, don't believe me if you don't want to. Simply call the IRS up at their known, published phone number from their official published website and ask them.
- KATHERINE M TEICHI received a letter CP2000 telling me that I owe money for the year 2021
