- BARB| 1 reply800-829-8310 is a real IRS number. I called 800-829-1040 and waited for 2 hours on the phone to get help, re:CP2000, THAT I thought might be a scam. The letter was from IRS, but they made a mistake and I do have to send in data to verify that I did pay taxes as claimed. Address in Austin TX is also verified. If you want to be sure call the IRS number from their website 800-829-1040, but be prepared to wait until you can get service. Don't ignore the letter.
- Jess| 1 replyI received a cp2000 letter from the IRS. At first I thought it was fake. I Googled the this number and nothing came up. So I called the actual number on the IRS.gov website and this number and letter is legit. Unfortunately, I owe 2000 unless I can prove I went to school. It was based on my school credit I had filed. Some information was missing. I won't have to pay as long as I can prove I paid a certain amount. Hope this helps anyone. Call the IRS number if you are unsure. Just make sure you have 2 hrs to wait on hold 😐 I was on hold for 1.5 hrs.

If u don't believe it check the link below, it is from the IRS Website. It is the manual for audit underpayment resolution. The number is listed very low in the content between 55 or 65%of the content.
https://www.irs.gov/irm/part21/irm_21-003-001r-cont01.html. - CWG40 replies to S| 2 repliesIt is a scam. You just listed an internal number which, in case you didn't know it, is easily capable of being spoofed.
- S replies to andjaIt is the underwriting department from IRS
Check the manual for audit underpayment resolution from the IRS website. The link is below:

Outgoing vs. incoming calls. So the number xxx-xxx-xxxx could be made to show 800-829-8310 on your caller ID display for an incoming call.
- John DoeIt is a scam!!! I called the IRS today because I received a similar letter with the same number on it and they said it is a scam to report it to 18003664484
- Ruiz replies to CWG40| 1 replyI just got this letter saying I owe 2000 dollars for not filling in 2015. Which is stupid because I have my tax folder from hnr block. Is this really a scam?
- Pixie Rosile replies to RuizI got the same letter too saying that I owed $2,000 from 2015. Why did it take them this long to notify me. Plus I couldn't owe this, I don't work!
- MarciaLetter from Glen Kilkenny, operations manager of IRS. I could call that number as I might owe addl tax. Already paid tax amt sent by IRS.
- Mike WiltonJust curious whose phone number this is
- Leslie| 1 replyI got mail from IRS, it's a noticed from my 2015 tax, i received it in the mailbox july 3 2017, saying i owe $12,444 . It was sent from 5045 e butler ave fresno ca 93888-0021 tried to call them with the number written on the letter, i was expecting to talk to a representative regarding this BS tax. Didn't talked to anyone, so i googled IRS number cause i really wanted to complain why the H i owe them. But the number written on the letter was different from the contact number of IRS and something came up that this is some kind of fraud/scams. No way i can owe that kind of money! Over my dead body! They're using 18008298310 different from what i googled!
- CWG40 replies to LeslieTake the letter to the local IRS office. Let them take a look at it. It is almost certainly a fraud. If it is a fraud, take a copy of the letter down to your local post office so that the postal inspectors can take a look at it.
- Matt AI just received a CP2000 for 2015 with this information as well. Called the official IRS number from their site and spoke to a person that said it was real even though he never actually confirmed any of my personal information. I checked the IRS Online Account page and while it shows my current owings for 2016, it currently says I owe nothing for 2015. I asked the person about this on the phone and he said CP2000 owings would not show on the website. From everything i have looked up online, this letter seems to be legit, but im super concerned.
