Actually they will, if enough people complain.  Meantime invest in a call blocker and DO NOT pick up on numbers you do not recognize.  You might want to block the 844 area code; it is often used by scammers.

The infamous  “Coastal” or CFS scam.  No idea where they are located.  Call from a variety of numbers for several years now. Ignore and block any calls received from this “Coastal” group. Sometimes uses the CID of “Coastal Litigation” or Coastal Pre-litigations.

Mark Wallace is a current debt scamming persona for this “CFS”.

    Report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.) As is endless harassing calls.

Also contact your local attorney general

Note that no debt collector has ANYTHING to do with any public prosecutor or any "public authorities".    Being in ordinary civil debt is NOT a crime and you cannot be prosecuted for it.  We do NOT have debtors prisons in the USA.

    In any event,

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

    1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
    2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
    3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)  The same goes for endless telephone harassment

Note that the US Supreme Court in the Case of HENSON ET AL. v. SANTANDER CONSUMER USA INC., has recently ruled that the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act do not apply if the creditor owns the debt in question.  As a practical matter this probably won't effect the kinds of scam debt collectors who often show up on 800notes.  The scam collectors don't give you any information about themselves so it is impossible to know whether or not they in fact "own" the debt in question.  Most do not send debt validation letters and many often say they are collecting for someone else.  So, make the complaint anyway if they are bothering you.  Let the FTC sort it out.

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.
You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking).   the only thing they understand.

Keeps calling for the passed year looking for a Chris Barns. Told them don't know a C. B. but they still calling after they said they'd remove my number from their list. Damn funny cause that was last year and the [***] heads still calling even after blocking their number. Maybe a law suit for harassment calls from them might stop them?

I love calling these idiots back over and over and over again like they do to us. I use an app called Extreme Call Blocker Pro for Android cause it has a call and text bomb feature. I literally set it to dial their number a thousand times and hang up on the person automatically after the call connects.

Mark Wallace called me, then my brother (!!!) looking for my where abouts.  I called back and I got "Connie" from Recovery Services.  Apparently I took out a loan for $350 and defaulted on it and the company "Archery Support" was seeking legal action.  When I asked her, "I don't understand why my name is still on your scam list.  You called me last year and I didn't fall for it.  Do you know your actions are criminal?"  She got flustered and said, "Well I can't help if you think it's a scam.  The company will be taking you to court."  I said "BRING IT!  I'll be waiting for the court documents."  She hung up on me.

Just tried to call back from a spoofed number and F with them.

Sadly, they've already closed up operations on this particular number. Voice recording advises you to enter the party's extension you wish to speak with or else press zero to be connected to the next available "associate". Seconds later, it tells you the party at extension 871 is not available. "Please leave your message after the tone." "Sorery (Canadian sounding), but that mailbox is no longer accepting any messages. "An error has occurred, Please try again." Then it disconnects.
