My caller ID showed 480-690-7042 out of Phoenix AZ, and the message was the same as everyones on this thread. They called asking for my mom, to call in regards to a "pending civil action", and to give them a call back at 844-485-2550  with reference number 747236

Also, they said they were from Barnes and Associates.

Call stating I owe mid America bank it was a debt 2006 or 2007 for a 1000 dollars and that a civil sue was going to be filed against me . I have never gotten any money from this place.

Called my wife and me with the story that a civil action was going to take place against me.  My wife called, and they claimed I owed over $2900 for a cable bill from August, 2000.  Said they would settle for $1500.  My wife told them they were crazy.

The fake process server/location finder extortion SCAM usually consists of the following:

They mention that they have received a Fax document or some sort of complaint and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency.  They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  They threaten to serve you at home or at work.  They tell you that if they serve you at work then they will need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work.  They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID.  None of which is true.  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.  They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”.  Court documents are time sensitive and must be served within a certain amount of time.  Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there really is a lawsuit that has been filed against you.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.  

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.  If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

Same they called my family members stating same story as the others

Received a voice mail from a women stating I was being sued and to call 844-485-2550 and she left a reference number. I called, they transferred me to a male who couldn't give me any details about my "claim" or why I was being sued. All he could tell me was it was an expired Aspire Visa that I owed to. I've never in my life had an Aspire Visa!! I asked him what address did he have for me so he could send me proper documentation and he wouldn't answer my question. Just kept saying I'll receive a letter in the mail and I'll have to show up to court and prove it wasn't my credit card. Total scam!! I don't know how these scumbags sleep at night.

They called me stating that I owed 7,000 dollars on a debt back on 2012 I found out that these people are a scam.

I received a call from Barnes and Associates yesterday from a number different than any mentioned above. My phone silences unknown callers but they are able to leave a voicemail. Since I didn’t answer they called 2 of my children and asked them to forward the message with a reference number. I called them within minutes of receiving the message at which time they told me there is a civil suit against me for a 17 year old debt! They said it could be settled out of court for roughly $5k but if not it would be over $18k plus all of the court costs. Also tried telling me that they have sent 2 judgment letters to which I decided not to respond to (never got them). I did not give them any personal info, they had it! I said to the man So this is the part where you ask me for money right? He said “No, we’re just the mediator”. So what’s the end game here? Also, pretended to be 2 different people when they said they were forwarding me to my “case manager”. It is illegal for them to threaten you with legal action for a debt that is no longer collectible by law. I’m sure there will be another call though to actually try to collect money. They must purchase old debt records in hopes of being able to scare someone into paying, and I’m sure they succeed from time to time. I’m sure the original creditor never sees a dime of that money since it has long been written off. The # was 855-906-6427. Then you call back and they tell you that person, Isabel Dunkin isn’t actually there.

I received a message from this person as well, but from a completely different number than the one being mentioned. But when you do call, they say that person isn’t actually there.

I got a call from someone claiming to be from Barnes and associate. Said I had a pending action against me and I needed to call them asap. They also called my daughter . They gave a  ref number and phone number 855 757 0519. They called from an 803 number to start with. I told the lady I was going to speak to my attorney and she hung up

I just got the same thing! It scared me to death! Thank God I did some research and stumbled upon these comments. Thank you!

They called me from 904-312-5073 and a lady told me she was trying to reach as I have a legal issue in my county and was looking at being sued. She went on to tell me to call this number 855-757-0519 where some guy answered and asked for the reference #. Then went on to say I owed a business loan from back in 2007 and from a bank I've never done business with. He went on to say they would sue me for DOUBLE the amount owed and they had some special clause that would over ride the statutes of limitations. When I said I've never had a loan with that bank he said to look for a notice of law suit in the mail. He even knew the last 4 of my social! I told him "Good Luck" and hung up.

They left a threatening message for my husband on my phone. Saying action would be taken and said they sent him notices in Cobb County ( SCAM) I reported them to BBB

So you reported them to the most useless, worthless, toothless agency on the planet instead of the actual Federal and State Agencies that really do have law enforcement powers?  Why?
