Invest in a call blocker and do not pick up on numbers you do not recognize.  Report them, see my previous  entry.  Being in ordinary civil debt is not a crime and you cannot be arrested for it.  THis is a total scam.

Total scam.  If there was a pending civil law case against you, you'd have heard about it by letter from the attorney for the other party.  There'd be a paper trail.  You would NOT have heard about this from some scammery-scummery debt collector who cold calls you and threatens you and starts demanding money.  Being in ordinary civil debt is not a crime and you cannot be arrested for it.

Also, check fraud is a crime, if you were suspected of such a crime you'd have already been interviewed on a face-to-face basis by members of law enforcement.  No debt collector has anything to do with check fraud or law enforcement.

This is a debt collection scam.  Do not pay them anything.  Ignore and block the calls.

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

    1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
    2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
    3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a clear violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.  Tell 'em  no scammy debt collector is going to push you around.

You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking).   the only thing they understand.

A real job would be too hard for them. Continuing down the path you took is an invitation for the same results. Engaging in conversation with these people is asking for aggressive stupidity if they know you're not buying their pitch. No answer means no business for them.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

    Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
    (202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

Two days in a row at the same time I received this call with the same message as everyone else.  If you owe someone money you would have received notices.  Not some threatening litigation voicemail.  I blocked the calls. It's ridiculous. Total scam

I work for a law firm and NEVER call to warn someone that I am going to file a lawsuit against them or that there's a pending case.  You do not waive any rights by NOT talking to these [***].  This is a collector who is trying to scare folks (which is against the law) into paying old debts.  I answered the call and the debt was from 2011.  Uh...good luck with collecting that.  If they had called within the statute of limitations, I may have settled.  Don't give these folks a minute of your time.   They are vultures.
