05/16/11 - I got a letter today, in Reno,NV, elgibility number starting with a T. Never believed it for a moment, but was curious to what was "out there" about it. First thing I did was Google, and came here. So sorry to everyone that got touched a bit on this. My mortgage is very secure and we're no where near troubled waters financially. That was the tipoff for me. Good luck everyone.

Scam...scammmmm!!!!

I just talked to them & I am likely to get almost $5,000 back from an old mortgage that was messed up.  This money could really help my family.

I also received a letter in the mail from ACT saying they could get money back for me. I called the phone number they listed  1-866-259-0031. Spoke to a young lady that wanted to help me! She told me that there were red flags and that ment I had been overcharged! But if I paid the $149.00 that they would get the money back for me. But if they found nothing wrong then they would refund the $149.00 back to me. I told her I had to talk to my husband first. She gave me her direct phone number and ext.  (877) 576-5561 ext. 5252 and told me to call her the next day and she would help me get started. I knew something was wrong and wanted to let others Be-Where !

Not so fast, everyone.  If you got a letter, chances are you are owed a refund but there is a way to get it yourself.  I saw Suze Orman on a show and she talked about missingmoney.com (or .org) and said there are billions of dollars being held.  I went it and sure enough I am owed money from a mortgage we took out several years ago.  I believe this company, ACT, probably charges you money to do something you can do for yourself.  So, if you got a letter, check out the website I mentioned.

"am likely to get" and "could really help my family" are vague, feel-good, weasel phrases typically used by shills. Are you sure there aren't any statute of limitations that would hinder your refund "from an old mortgage that was messed up?" How much will an attorney cost to pursue this case? More or less than $5,000? I hope you're not a shill but somehow I think you are.

"if they found nothing wrong then they would refund the $149.00 back to me" makes no sense, does it? Why don't they simply charge you only *AFTER* they find something wrong? Wouldn't that be a whole lot simpler instead of constantly charging and refunding $149?

What Suze O. was talking about is unclaimed property that all companies are required to turn in to state govs for safe-keeping when their real owners cannot be found. Unclaimed property include interest payments on savings accounts, contents of forgotten deposit boxes, etc. This $149 mortgage audit for "errors" is *not* unclaimed property and will never be included on state unclaimed-property lists. Also, if your mortgage company wants to refund money to you, don't you think they'll be able to find you through the address of the property on the mortgage papers?
Beware of fake scamming unclaimed-property search websites like this one https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-866-228-4562
The best free search for unclaimed property is the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) website http://www.unclaimed.org/  Searches are free and will simply direct you to each state's gov unclaimed-property webpage but beware some states use some really weird domain names. For example, New Mexico's webpage is on tax.newmexico.gov so you know for sure it's a legit site but Kansas uses kansascash.com and you have to root around a little to make sure it really belongs to the Kansas state gov (it does).
missingmoney.com is registered to "ACS Unclaimed Property Clearinghouse" in Boston, MA and the website says "Officially endorsed by NAUPA and the participating states and provinces." Given a choice between missingmoney.com and unclaimed.org, I'd use unclaimed.org.

I'm a Realtor in Dallas and recd ltr from ACT about refund. Checked em out and they're out of Utah. 3 partners involved in this and a loan servicing co and a financial co. Typical process for lead generation for their companies. Sneaking in the back door tactics. Shame on them

Do not waste time or money responding to this advertisement. It is a mortgage default SCAM. They have purchsed your address from a third party and know that you are either delinquent or at risk of becoming delinquent on your home loan. So they play this game called "Forensic Audit". They will tell you that x% of people have been overcharged by their mortgage company in the form of fees and or finance calculations and for a small fee they will do an audit for you. IF they find anything, then you will be entitlted to "thousands" of dollars in refunds.  SCAM, SCAM - don't fall for it. Report it!!

I agree with you Brian. I called the number and a woman who gave me her first and last name said she would email to me information about the company. I won't be so quick to give them $149 but also not so quick to dismiss the claim that I am owed money. Bankers are not reprehensible, so who  knows, I may be owed money. I will wait and get more info on ACT and make a decision.
