- Lauretta| 12 repliesIt was Wells Fargo-Auto. They didn't call me, I received a letter with that number and called them...while I was waiting on hold, I googled the number to see if it was legitimate. They asked a couple of "identifying questions" which I was very vague about, but I think it really was them. I'm going to follow up at my local branch just to be safe.
- Tygerkat replies to LaurettaWhat were the contents of the letter? Why did they want you to call them?
- Tammy replies to LaurettaI recieved a letter as well with this number did did out anything about it?
- Dammitall| 8 repliesA friend recvd a letter from Wells Fargo Auto, saying she overpaid on a deferment she requested so they sent her a cashier's ck.for under $20. The pH.# at the top was 480-394-3122 but at the bottom of the letter was 866-295-7056. She pH the local Wells Fargo and was advised it's a scam. If you get a ck.from them, DO NOT CASH IT! Call WF In your own town and let them know. It's a SCAM and probably designed to get into your bank account about the time of the stimulus checks come out.

- Hellno| 10 repliesThe Wells Fargo check is a scam. Genuine cashier's checks have the name of the issueing bank, etc.The pH.# on the bottom of the letter takes you right to the scammer's own ph. so of course it's going to tell you its a good check. They are trying to get in your bank account once you cash the ck. It's a fraud. Don't be dumb enough to think it's legit. They are trying to get access to your tax refunds and stimulus checks. Be smart!

- KB| 3 repliesI got one of these refund checks and the check is legitimate. I went thru my local WF and then 1-800 WF. They transferred me to where the check was confirmed. 800 WF transferred me to 866-295-7056. It is from a fee 17 years ago. Folks saying it's a scam and making you lose money.
- Caller: Wells Fargo
- Call type: Valid
- Kat* replies to KBShill alert! You state you were transferred to this number so clearly you already knew to whom it belongs but came to a phone number look-up site anyway. Why?
- chughes| 6 repliesThis number was listed on a letter that included a refund check from Wells Fargo Auto finance. It stated it was a refund of late fees that were assessed incorrectly. I called Wells Fargo Auto directly, not using the number on the check, and they verified that 480-394-3122 and 866-295-7056 were their numbers and that yes, they did send the refund check for an auto loan that I had YEARS ago.
- Caller: Wells Fargo
- chughes replies to Hellno| 9 repliesIt is not a scam. I called Wells Fargo directly and they confirmed they did send the refund check and that it was from an auto loan I had YEARS ago. This is legit, 100%
- Kat* replies to chughesWow, 2 shills in as many days. Why should we believe YOUR call to WF instead of the poster who said THEIR call to WF revealed the #s DON'T belong to them?
- Robert GoodellI got the same check in the mail. I too was very suspicious of this as I haven't had a loan from Wells Fargo in a long time (about 6-8 years). I looked up the number on the internet and called. They said the check is legit. It's because of changes they are making. I'm pretty sure this has to do with the mismanagement of funds at WF. They got caught scamming customers.
- Caller: Letter in the mail
- Angela| 1 replyI, too, received a check that is supposed to be a refund of late charges that were assessed at an incorrect amount. If the check is legitimate, why is it dated June 16, 2020, but signed by Richard Levy, the Chief Accounting Officer who retired on March 31, 2020, instead of Muneera S. Carr, the current Chief Accounting Officer, who took his place? It is definitely a scam. If you cashed one of these checks, you better pay close attention to your bank account for many years.

- Phaedra Lawson replies to Dammitall| 1 replyI just got the same check and figured it was something weird about it as my account was closed over 14 years ago. I will take it to them tomorrow
- Ked72 replies to chughes| 3 repliesSo was it legit after all? I just got this letter in the mail today.
- B-Edwards replies to Ked72| 2 repliesYou need to be careful about this - 'chughes' just might be a shill. It seems the scam might be one where you are issued a refund, and then later a claim is made that you were overpaid and now have to return some or all of the money.
There are other scams possible, of course. You might check the links in post above from Angela.
If you have a Wells Fargo branch near you, you might ask them if the check is good or not. - CelticDragon replies to B-Edwards| 1 replyJust a thought, instead of WF, take it to YOUR bank. I, for one, do not trust WF
- B-Edwards replies to CelticDragonYes, WF has some problems and a person's own bank should be able to spot a bogus check.
- Viviana replies to Lauretta| 1 replyIt's definitely a scam. I received a check for $21.90 that says it was for incorrect late charges. The dialogue doesn't seem like it's from Wells Fargo. I'm taking it to my branch. Don't cash it. They will steal your signature.
I don't have a Wells Fargo Auto Loan, so I knew it was a scam. Don't trust texts either. Thieves out there. - Viviana replies to LaurettaYes, that's how I figured it out. I Googled the phone number on the check. I called it and they picked up right away, so I hung up. Clearly this is a scam.
- Kat* replies to VivianaWhy would they want to "steal your signature"?
