- LookBeforeYouLeapThis number phoned me today, its one of several now that have phoned me only to be a dead line when I answer, and then the call is disconnected.
I phoned it back only to get an answering machine featuring a female voice with a foreign (possibly british) accent. When it came to the message stating the name of the business that called me the words were garbled by a combination of the accent and some mumbling, so that all I could be absolutely sure of is that they said they phone people in some regard to Fortune 500 companies.
During my inquiries I was directed to the Canadian Marketing Association to apply to have my number added to their national Do Not Call list.
This is where my nickname comes into play.
Before adding my number to the list, i asked who has access to the CMA do not call list. I learned that not only do canadian member businesses have access to it, but US member businnesses do as well.
This sent up a red flag and my next queston was very specific.
'Are there any legal grounds preventing US members of your association
from using the Do Not Call list maintained by your association as a list
of confirmed numbers for either calling or resale to other non-member
companies who are not based out of canada.'
After several minutes on hold while they consulted with someone (perhaps thelegal department) I was informed that outside of the CMA's internal code of ethics and policy, there is currently no active law preventing IS based members of the association from using the list as a call list, or reselling the information to other companies.
However, according to the CMA come september 2008 a new federal law in the USA takes effect that will indeed make these actions illegal.
My suggestion to those here (who are living in canada) who wish to never be called by a US or Canadian based telemarketing or teleresearch firm is to wait untill at least October 2008 and contact the Canadian Marketing Association via their website at http://www.the-cma.org/ or by telelphone at 1-416-391-2362 (long distance charges may apply and the call will be answered by an automated switchboard which may take a few minutes to navigate through in order to register your number or speak with a real person).
On average it takes 6 to 8 weeks for the Do Not Call service to come into effect once you have added your phone number to it. Once this waiting period has passed, you will have 3 years (under canadian law at least) in which it is unlawfull for any Canadian based telemarketing or teleresearch firm to call the number you registered. The same MAY apply to US based businesse DEPENDING on the nature of the applicable US Federal Laws. - RedangelI got a call from 1-866-629-7707 today and on march 4 and on march 3rd i also revived a call from 1-000-000-0000( no said anything). todays call someone was talking but i really couldnt hear them cuz it was fuzzy and i could hear noise in the background.
- TI have received at least 50 calls from this number but I have never picked up. They call at any time of the day, once at 6:30am on my day off which really pissed me off. I can't stand 1-800 numbers especially if the person is very aggressive and won't take no as an answer. So for these people I have this little game I play where I'll respond to their survey if they do my survey first. If they agree I start asking random personal questions like what there name is, age, if they are married, their address and so on until they decide to hang up. They usually end the conversation saying they can't give that kind of information so I say then what makes you expect me to. So now that I know what this number is I can't wait till they call back.
- ScottishJust got a call from said number (1-866-629-7707). Saturday at supper.
The heavily accented man said he was from MBNA Canada with a deal on an MBNA Platinum Mastercard with a 9.9% interest rate, and that I had already been approved for this card.
He began reviewing some of my information...address and the like. Most of this information he already had, so I didn't worry about this.
Then came my birthdate which I gave, although I was beginning to get more than a little worried over a possible scam.
Next, he asked for a "secret codeword" in case the bank needed to talk to me via internet or phone. At this point I knew I wasn't going to give anymore information over the phone and asked a few questions of him.
When that happened, he oblidged...although it was in a fashion where he spoke very rapidly making my concern grow.
He offered to give me some information to write down, but by then I was too paranoid to continue. After some slight urging by him I told him "1 second" (I was getting pen & paper...supposedly...)Then I just hung up.
I believe I have gotten this number on my call display many times before.
After going and seeing where this call originated (Transworks, Inc. in NJ) I found that it did seem legitimate, and reading the previous call details of this number I believe I can now breathe a sigh of relief.
But I truly think that in a day where scams are so abundant, they could find a less frightening way to drum up new business.- Caller: MBNA Mastercard (via Transworks Inc.)

- ticked off| 1 replyI am fed up with these people. I now call their number and leave a message for them - I put the phone to a speaker and play music. I plan on doing this many times a day. The cost may not be much to them, but they will pay some money to call me continually. I do not plan on leaving my number on their answering system - how many more companies will they sell my number to?
- ticked off too replies to ticked offOh yea, and I would hope more people will start doing the same. Give them back their own due.
- AdaviesThis company has called me 6 times today alone - each time I have answered, but no-one is on the other end of the line - i just hear a clicking sound and then the call disconnects - I so cannot wait for one of the [***] to be on the other end of the line!!!

I HATE THEM! - Turnabout is fair playI've been getting these calls for many months, I have never answered. The frequency has dropped but they still phone several times a week (down from several a day).
Here's what I'm going to do: Every time I pass a pay phone I'm going to call. Won't cost me anything but time, which I'm already wasting checking my Call ID and deleting their number. "They" on the other hand will have to pay for it and listen to the blank messages.- Caller: Unknown
- Cin replies to Lynn BI've been receiving calls from this number for the past week and a half now and all they do is hang up never leave a messege. I don't answer the phone to a number I don't know. So I have no idea who this is but it's getting really annoying and they'll call maybe 3 or 4 times a day I just want it to stop.
- Cincaller calls several times a day never leaves a messege and I'm tired of it. I wish them to stop. All they do is annoy people.
- bett| 1 replyThey call at least 3 times a day. It drives me crazy.
- B replies to bettI have an MBNA card so I've never been surpirsed when these numbers show up, but they drive me crazy. They will call until 8:55 in the evenings (I think they're not allowed to call after 9), but I never pick up. Sometimes they call 5 times a day, most days out of the week. This has been going on for months. Wish this would stop and this is the most successful way of stopping me from ever opting into another service from them.
