- Chris replies to Online Bill PayerThis is a relief. I was told by a toyota finance rep that they were unaware from whom they were receiving my monthly payment besides a references to Chase. This did not make sense. Now it does. It's still creepy.
- ADT replies to beari got the exact same check today in the mail. Mine was for $300 but had Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati as the bank it was drawn on.
what is super creepy about this...ithas my parent's name and address at the top of the check and the check was made out to me.....weird because we live in 2 different states.
i thinhk it is a total fraud. Did the police ever give you information on the check you submitted? - GEONAVY| 2 repliesAll, with the number of check frauds going on it great to see that everyone is dilligent and you should be. As for the Online Bill Payment Center, I received a check and felt it was a fraud because I forgot that a friend was sending me a check for something I picked up for him. He told me the check was in the mail without informing me that he was using an online Bill Payment Service. I almost shredded the check before I realized it was from him. Stay on your toes to keep from getting ripped off.
- Terrell replies to Stephanie| 3 repliesI have been receiving a $50 check every 2 weeks from this "Payment Processing Center" for about 4 months now. My brother is using them to pay off a loan from me. He has it set up to where the $50 is withdrawn from his paycheck. Neither one of us has had any problems. Sounds like someone is using them or just their information to pull off some sort of scam.
In most cases these checks are good and not a scam. (How can it be a scam if you are getting money?) In most cases, the REAL sender's name is on the left side of the check and reason for the check will be below their name.
I myself don't feel safe using this method to pay my own bills. But if someone else uses them to pay YOU, then you're safe. You can (and should) always ask your bank if the check(s) you receive are good before trying to cash them.
If someone is sending you these checks and then want you to forward the money onward to someone else, or perhaps back to them, then it is a scam. But if you receive them with no explanation, then most likely they are good. - In Utah replies to Sam| 1 replyI Was trying to make an online payment to my electric company for 37.31
I was on the actual website and started to put my info in... then another page came up with all this that looked funny. I got a strange hunch and decided to close the page and pay through my bank account with free bill pay. Then, I received a fake check about 4 Days later for the same amount I was about to pay. Them dumb put pay to the order of to my power company instead of my name; and put my address. And the bulk mail bar code is below that. I'm going to make some calls and change all my quick. - Scambuster| 1 replyI received a check processed by the Online Bill Payment Processing Center with a notation on the check stating “remittance void if not cashed within 90 days.” The check was dated January 21, 2009, and was cashed 85 days later on April 16, 2009. It was returned to my bank for a “stop payment” and processed by my bank on April 21, 2009, 90 days after the date on the check.
I contacted the Online Bill Payment Processing Center at 877-246-7923, and spoke with a woman who said that the 90-day period starts with the date the check is requested by their customer, not the date of the check. Since I was aware that this was not in accordance with normal banking practices, I asked to speak with her supervisor. A person who indicated that she was the supervisor said that the 90-day period begins when the check is mailed, and claimed that it was mailed on January 15, 2009, but post-dated January 21, 2009. I received the check on January 23, 2009. I told her that the date on the check determines the beginning of the 90-day period. She then offered to “educate” me on how the banking system works. At that point, I asked for her supervisor or someone in management. She told me that there is no one above her level; and said that if I have a complaint, I should write to Presidential Inquiries, Post Office Box 2168, Columbus, Ohio 43216.
Either this operation is grossly incompetent or there is some type of fraud being perpetrated. - Caffeinated24x7 replies to GEONAVY| 1 replyJust as an FYI for everyone, I sent myself a check from my Online BillPay account at Bank of America to see what type of check others are getting. To my surprise, this was from Payment Processing Center, P.O. Box 2994, Phoenix, AZ 85062-2994 with the Fifth Third Bank, Cincinnate, OH 45263 and a phone number 877-246-7923. So keep it in mind, you might be receiving a check from a friend who is paying you back for something or someone you do business with that uses Online BillPay.
I almost threw out the check because I couldn't figure out who it was from too! From now on, I'm adding a memo on everything! - AO replies to vanessaHere's how this works. Many banks offer online bill pay to their account holders. They tell you that you can pay anyone through online bill pay, even if they don't accept ACH payments. This is how these merchants get paid. When you set up the bill in online bill pay, you should enter the merchant's name and address, not your address, and your account number. Then this Payment Processing Center will attempt to pay the merchant through ACH (electronic payment like direct deposit). If the merchant isn't able to accept ACH payment, the Payment Processing Center writes a check to your merchant out of their bank account. Then, on the day the payment is scheduled to be withdrawn from your checking account, the Payment Processing Center withdraws the funds from your account.

- Paul replies to TerrellUm....
A legitmate check yes..
But with this chk comes automatic subscriptions and a right to autodraft.
Only a fool would cash these checks.
These kind of check are how they will steal your money and do it some what legally because you authorized them by cashing the check.
Cashing these is the #1 way to get into peoples accts.
Your brother or yourself is getting ripped off...
Its a scam even if you are getting $$, it wont be long before they start takig it.
Similar reports to this are where after a few weeks of giving you they then take everything you have ...
In my moms case that would easily be a lot of $.
But in the case of 'online bill payment processing... it is so generic that its obviously not a legitiamte usuable chk. - PaulPeople, if you use online billpay or quicken or similar.... it wont go thru this sortg of setup.
In my own case, any billpay or quciken will have a 'bankofamerica' all over it...there will be no generic details like these are.
this is generic in that the only true detail is the jpmorgan info.
They rest is debatable.
' - Paul| 1 replyAlso, btw, if this was a truely normal ach or other paper trail..it not only would be more obvious, but not be soley a check.
No biz will send a chk out that has no documentation to explain (such as a letter saying this is your refund or similar. - note again replies to Paulagain note, that if this was legit you would have additional information telling you were its from & why.
Its fake in that if you cash it you are subscribing or putting yourself on some sort of purchase process...
They will end up getting your $$ - Bnail60 replies to StephanieHi Amy,
I also just received a check for 8,102.00. It has my name address, my business and my daughters name on it as the account.
It looks very real.
I know it's a scam but do not know how they do it. If they got to the elderly it would be awful. - Smart| 1 replyThis is a check through a check payment service. Go to a site like routingnumbers.org and enter the second set of numbers on the bottom of the check. Then simply take it to that bank and cash it.
- Russ CagleThis was a check with the 877 246 7923 number on it. the check was for an amount of 16.98 with a Online Bill Payment Processing Center, P.O. Box 2994, Phoenix, AZ 85062-2994. There is a bank mentioned JPMORGAN CHASE BANK, N.A. 1072. Delaware, Ohio 43015. 56-1551/441. I have no idea who this is from.
- SorcePeople, disregard the posters who are claiming these checks are legit. They aren't. I received the same one and they are indeed fraudulent. If you receive one, simply take it you your bank and tell them you suspect it may be fraudulent and they will investigate for you. It can't hurt, right? But please don't just absentmindedly cash these checks. You are going to be taken and I believe some of these posters on here telling you otherwise are part of the scam so don't be fooled. Better safe than sorry, right?
- New Job| 3 repliesI recently started a new job with this company. I am working from home as a consultant. Now. I received a check from the company that was sent to me via online bill pay. I am not sure if it is fraudulent or not. I do know that they paid for my train ride to come visit them ($130 ticket), they paid for my dinner, and they even called my references to check out my previous employers.
Am I to assume that a company would go through such lengths only to con me? I took the check to my bank on Friday. They were all worried about it and questioned who my employer was and didn't know exactly what to do. I Bank with First National Bank.
So what they did was call the number on the check and they talked to someone there. The person on the other end okayed it. Since it was a $350 check, they cleared it and made my funds available. It is still pending I believe. It had a water mark on it.
I will let you all know what happens to the check come Monday. I have been working with the company for a week now and it all seems legit so far? Is there a chance that the company is being scammed? Or just me? - NPD| 1 replyI received one of these today and thought it was fraudulent until I read this thread. There probably are some scammers somewhere using this check stock, but I bet in many cases, (like me) people are receiving checks drawn on their own accounts (or legitimately owed to them) and paid through a bill-pay service. The service provides few details on the check origin which (rightly) sets off alarm bells in our heads. Do your due diligence, but I'd hate to think the scam fear-mongering on this board caused someone to discard a valid check that they were entitled to.
- Christina M. replies to Terrell| 1 replyWe got one, too, and it was legitimate.
