I got a call from a person who said he is with "A Company".  He asked for me by name and said that (a woman's name)  ( my husband's ex-wife) had filled out some paperwork with them that referenced me (her ex-husbands current wife) as one of her relatives.  They wanted to verify our kinship with me.  I told him I was not her relative, I asked him if she had me down as a relative and he said, "yes".  I asked him for his name he told me,  I then asked for the company's  phone number, he said, " 1-877-291-8405."  That is the same number I am seeing on this site. The number that registered on our caller ID was was a different number.   I then told him no I was not her relative and hung up.  I called the company back on the first number just to verify that is was "A Company,"  as he had explained before.  I got confirmation of that.  Then I called the other number that was listed on our caller ID and got the same guy that called me the first time.   I don't know about the rest of the incidents, but this one seems like a random fishing trip.   This was the first time they had called maybe, maybe they won't call back again.

I recieved a call from FMS yesterday on my house number and today at my work. I am aware of student loans that I have but was under the impression that they were in deferment. Joseph Abraham was the man I talked to at the agency. He basically told me that I owed 18,000 dollars in student loans and the government was going to start garnishing my wages if I didn't pay it all at once. I am a single mother on one income with no child support, this is an absured amount of money to pay all at once. After the man talked to me for a good 20 min I told him that I would  have to call him back because I didn't keep any of the information that he needed with me at work. After getting of the phone I called the place where I have this loan and according to them this is a legit company. I am still very leary about paying them anything because of all the negative stuff on here. Has anyone else followed up with their student loan company to find that this is a legit company?

If yuo're leary of this company, call the people you have your student loan with and make arrangements to make payments to THEM and no one else. Make sure they send you an official letter saying this and the minimum amount you have to pay each month.

Make a few copies of it, sign one along with a note saying you agree to these terms and send it back via certified mail (that way you know when they've gotten it and you have proof).

When you get any further calls from companies trying to collect, tell them you are dealing with the company you owe the debt to and no one else, that you have an official letter saying the company has agreed to this and that if they wish to continue to contact you it has to be via mail only. That way you can send a copy of the letter to them.

I just received a call at work from 877-291-8405 ext. 8624 Shantell Brown.  She claimed she needed to speak to me.  She began by stating she knew she was calling me at work and needed to verify my SSN to speak to me further, I explained to her that I could not discuss these things at work and she was welcome to call me after 5pm cst.  She stated she understood and asked to speak to someone in HR to verify my employment and set up garnishment.  I told her I was the office manager and everything went through me.  She stated that I should just give her a call back when I got the chance to discuss matters with her and tried again to verify my SSN and DOB.  I told her I would not verify this over the phone.  She then tried to verify my address and stated something was mailed to me but never specified what it was pertaining to.  I still don't know what the call was about.  She never stated she was calling to attempt to collect a debt or anything.  She stated she was calling from FMS but I don't know what that is either.  After reading on here, I am unsure what the call was about but am willing to find out just to make sure they don't have any of my information out there for "other" purposes.

ignorance is truly a disease, 1.  if its a student loan @ d federal level and obviously in default there is no statue of limitations on govt debt its not goin anywher until u pay it the govt will take it out of taxes your wages ur s.s or disabilty 20 yrs 30yrs or until u die . instead of all these assumptions look it up online www.ed.gov or paymybill.com or look up the name of d agency online also if its a federal student loan trust me the govt did not sell ur debt they have contracts with different agencies 2 collect their debt it still belongs 2 the govt and mailing ur paymnts in these day and age is counterproductive and  . especially on a defaulted student loan wth accruing interst daily if ur paymnt is late or lost due 2 the mail then what? penalties and default fees wud be added .u  cancelled ur paymnts the part we dont hear or nver hear is when ur wages are being garnished or ss or disabilty is being garnished .....u owe the govt pay so that other folks can go 2 school....i learned the hard way read up on it all the info u need is online ..govt debts are different from private loans

This number is calling people out of the blue, I dont owe them anything.
They say they are looking for me and calling friends, we have not lived at same place for 10 years.
They wont give reason for call, and use auto messaging. I dont know how to make them stop, its not legit debt and they are beating up on innocent third parties.

    All About FMS: An Overview
The Financial Management Service (FMS), a bureau of the United States Department of the Treasury, provides central payment services to Federal Program Agencies, operates the federal government's collections and deposit systems, overseeing a daily cash flow of $94 billion. FMS provides government-wide accounting and reporting services, and manages the collection of delinquent debt owed to the government. FMS also supports federal agencies' financial management improvement efforts in the areas of education, consulting, and accounting operations.

FMS has about 1,800 employees, one-third of whom are located in three Regional Financial Centers (RFCs)—Kansas City, MO; Philadelphia, PA; and San Francisco, CA; and two Debt Collection Centers. The RFCs issue payments by electronic funds transfer (EFT) and paper check, and the Debt Collection Centers collect debts older than 180 days on behalf of federal agencies. All FMS employees, including the Commissioner, are career civil servants.

all you have to do is ask them to remove you from the calling list and they WILL! They did it for me nd they were calling for someone in my family that i admitted to knowing and being in contact with. But they respected my request and removed from the calling list.

Hey, just to help with this, I work for dept of ed at fms, and they have everything linked to SSN. So that means that if they verified that your moms ssn and the one on their account are the same, she DID sign that loan. And the only way to get them to stop is sending a copy of the certificate, or the person who she signed the loan for will be pursued next. It's legit and it's required. Look it up at ED.GOV, and you will see this. And the loan was not signed in the year that she had passed, it takes a LONG time to get to default so it's a much older loan.

No they DO NOT write off. If you were educated you would know that. They DO NOT DISCHARGE unless for disability 100 percent. Do your homework, ED.GOV.  Ask a lawyer, whatever. THE GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS FMS, so if you think the government is a scam lets see how far that gets you.

If it's honesty not her debt, she can just confirm that that is not the last 4 of her SSN, and date of birth, and she will be left alone. If however those types of info match, she will have to have disputed that with the federal government when she first became aware of the debt. If you are positive that it's not hers request a cease and desist, and they will stop calling. But if it's her debt and you request a CD, it will only make them offset her SSI or litigate against her, so please be careful and make sure she didn't co sign for someone.
