Yes, call an attorney.  It is illegal for them to threaten you.  If they are going to sue you that can tell you that but then they have to follow through or they are breaking the law.  Also, debt collection companies will usually negotiate down the fee owed not inflate it.  I would call an attorney ASAP.  Just google an attorney who handles this type of work and you may get your money back plus some.
I sued a collection agency once and won $2,500.00 Dollars.

These people calling from 205-267-6747 called upsetting my in-laws saying they were private investigators looking for my husband.
