Some facilities allow 24/7 access to the phone with calling cards. Some inmates have family and friends who work different shifts. It's up to the policy of each individual institution. Some facilities that do not offer 24/7 service have been sued saying it's an infringement of their rights.

You have to block the number yourself.  Realize you are blocking a lot of institutions that use this calling card service. It's not just a few places.

There is plenty of time to say a first and last name when inmates call. Unfortunately I've had experience with 3 different card companies (same inmate different facilities) and have usually had a first and last name caller. Had one caller who called with a first name, but next call was from Mr "last name". Just to let us know who the caller was since we didn't accept. Just common sense if it's the real thing! Also inmates can call random numbers on these cards where there's the recording this inmate is out of calling time....please enter your credit card number to add time to this caller's account. It's not illegal to call and ask for money, it's your choice to add money. Nothing illegal about that, unfortunately.  Inmates aren't always the most honest people. Some are, but most are legitimate on purpose crimes. Unfortunately.

Some inmates do use random numbers to try and get people to add money to their phone card by credit card. It's unfortunate,  but some people will thinking it's someone they know.  Not illegal for them to ask! You should call the facility to see what company they go through. They will tell you want your caller ID should say from the company they use. Most will verify if your loved one is there. Better safe than sorry!!

Not from the inmate themselves. Inmates are allowed one call using a regular phone when arrested. After that, it's a calling card. Not all facilities use the same calling card services. The free message is probably giving you an option to pay for the call or instructions using your credit card to setup an account with them, or add money to the inmate's card.

I got two calls from 1-877-710-3334 (w/ per-recorded message), 3:02 AM and 3:05 AM.  The first  call claims to be from Polk County Sheriff office, asking me to accept this call by pressing #1.  The second call from Sheriff office asking me to accept this call up to 15 minutes, by accepting a charge to by debit or credit card of $14.99, please press #1.  If I like to set up or add funds to a prepaid advance connect account for future calls press #2.  This is a scan, since I do not live in Polk County or ever visited.  Please Polk county is on the other side of the United States from me.

It's a jail inmate calling and the system is asking you to pay $14.99 to accept their call.

Thats BS people get free phone calls not 20 seconds

I received a call and it's totally legit.  My BF is in jail and tried calling me from the 877 number so I looked it up.  Found it is a company I had been looking into for accepting phone calls from inmates, called Securus.  So instead of accepting the 15 minute call for $14.99, I went online and used the live chat feature to set up an account.  The cost now is $30/mth.  It's a $1 connection fee when the inmate calls (as opposed to $4.00 or more typically) and is $0.20/min thereafter.  The money is deducted from the monthly $30 fee but then if you go over that, you will be billed and can pay that at a later due date.
When I answered the call, it stated to press 1 to hear the message, which is free.  The message is that this is an inmate calling and I was able to hear my BF announce his name through their recording.  I can accept and pay the $14.99 or hang up.  I hung up so that I could go online and set up a cheaper account.  If you now someone in jail, this is a great option.
I've been paying a fortune accepting phone calls from jail.  And yes, this service is for jails all over the U.S.

I keep getting robocalls from this number 6 so far today and 3 in the last 15 minutes.  how do I block them and who is the criminal generating them.

If you know someone in a correctional facility you're going to get raked over the coals if you want to talk to them. That's how it is. There are a few companies contracted to handle phone calls to and from jails & prison facilities. They're a racket. A monopoly in every sense of the word & they will be going under the microscope when more people become aware of the activity. As yet the states & municipalities are getting their cut. Some cases have already been exposed showing blatant flaws in systems. More will follow.
The whole incarceration system in this country is going to be gutted soon. First, we'll have to figure out why people named "Hillary" or "The Donald" should even be rationally considered to be contenders for the presidency.....

Someone calling from a jail (no jail name mentioned) for talk for (?) free seconds at no cost to me. A Shawndra was calling. A new scam I see. Once you accept the call you probably get charged a fortune. I've had this number for over 10 years and started getting quite a few scams recently so this is yet another one. I know what a call from jail sounds like and this ain't one of them!

yes it is a scam and a racket for all involved in the correctional system nationwide.
I get calls from van buren county in Michigan up to 10 times a day with various people saying "eh baby answer the phone", come on bro just answer, and on and on....
I used the option to block my number nationwide yet the calls keep coming.
Don't know anyone in jail and the one that is aloud to call me baby is right here with me.
Called the jail been told that's a new system to present collect calls. Stupid

Received such a call last night at 10:07 p.m. on 7/9/15. It went to vmail. This IS NOT the service the jails use!  They left a clear message using a local county, not mine, Jail... "Davis County Jail". I phoned them, and every local jail this a.m. in addition to looking at up to date inmate rosters available by most on line. No one I know. And verbally informed, no imate with names that might be at that jail.  If you receive this call DO NOT agree. Hang up and call your local or referenced jail and see if your loved one is there. Save yourself the headache. To represent a government agency should be a felony and in most places is. You should call your local jail if you are putting money on anyones books for "calls" as this message indicated I could beyond this initial incoming call for proper procedures.

Just received a call from this number at 10:55am MST.  I didn't answer it.  A voicemail was left.  It was an automated recording from the Apache County Sheriff's office asking me to press '1' to accept a free call.

Yes is a call from Securus (Inmate or someone is in jail :(....uff was my ex-boyfriend bad for him :(

It is someone calling you from jail. You have to pay the 9.99 to speak to the caller.
