- SnaprfoThis is actually from Penelec, a First Energy Company with questions about your billing. A valid call not a scam...
- Caller: Penelec
- Call type: Debt collector
- Troy GIt is from Jersey Central Power & Light telling you your bill is past due. I got my call 1 day after the due date even though I had a payment set up for 3 days later based on my payroll. Rather odd since I do this every month and never had a call.
- Caller: JCPL
- Call type: Event reminder
- cindy| 1 replythis is truly legit. got a call from first energy saying what i owe, they said i could pay with card for a fee or go on line and pay with no fee. did just that!
- Caller: first energy
- DM1 replies to cindyNice try, shill. We don't believe you!
- KwanSeveral days after my bill had been paid electronically, I got a call from this number saying my payment was overdue. I was offered the opportunity to pay it by credit card for a $3.95 charge. I ignored the call.
- Caller: Potomac Edison
- carrie2860It really is a scam because I just changed my phone number a week ago and hardly no one has it yet, plus it is my husband's name on the account, not mine.
- AnonymPhone call to my cell phone when I put star 67 in my company phone and called back it sayed they needed to check my balance please put in the phone number we called you at followed by the pound sign I9 did not call from my cell I called from company phone entered number for the scammers they said my bill was past due and pay them now hell they are scam artist not the power company
- Caller: DID NOT SAY
- csevans90This is really Penelec (or other FirstEnergy-affiliated electric company). I personally called Penelec at the number listed on their website and the customer service rep verified this. I'm not saying every person they call is a Penelec customer, but for some reason your number is linked with one of their accounts. If this is in error, simply call them back and tell them that. Stop being so paranoid!
- Caller: Penelec / FirstEnergy
- Libra womanThis call was to my husbands trac phone. No one has his number but me! Or elcetric bill is always paid way before it's due!! This number 888-208-5272 must be a scammer!!!!
- MartyFrom time to time when money is tight I let my Penelec bill got to shut off notice and never when they have called me about it used that number. I say scam...
- Caller: UBC
- OlderGuy.........warning.......yes this is a SCAM.
The # DOES NOT belong to 1st Energy.
The folks that post saying it’s a SCAM are correct.
The people posting that say it is legitimate are the
scammers themselves posting.
Call your utility, they will tell you the same thing.
(PS: the post above by DM1 is correct)- Caller: ........SCAM........
- ibtiggers replies to Classic LadySame at our shop, it's a scam!
- No really, scam replies to Chrisactually, it's a scam . . . that is NOT the correct website for 1st energy.
- msbThis time it said they were from riteaid about a refill which I didn't have
- HerbThis number is the actual number that First Energy uses to notify people that they are delinquent on their bills.
THAT SAID. There is no reason to pay your bill to an INCOMING CALLER.
Why might you get the call if you DON'T have a delinquent bill or account with them?
- If you have recently got your number, you may have got the number of someone with a delinquent bill.
- Someone may have used your number to open their account
- The caller may in fact BE a scammer and be using caller ID spoofing to scam people for money
Because of the last possibility, even if you DO owe money on your bill, I would advise to ALWAYS call in, log in, or pay your bill in person and never pay any bill of any type as the result of an INCOMING call, no matter how many pieces of information the caller may use to verify their or your identity.
For the same reason, never click a link in an email without verifying the address that you end up at in the browser, and for things like banks, popular shopping sites, PayPal, eBay etc, always type it in or use favorites to avoid getting "Phished" by sites that look like the login page.
For example, PayPal and many banks and financial institutions avoid sending links in their emails for this reason. They don't want you in the habit of feeling safe clicking on links in any email that looks like it came from them.
Similarly, you shouldn't feel comfortable giving personal information to people that call you.
To be safe, you should always be the one initiating the transaction on your terms.
Again, the number is legitimate, but there's no reason you can't say thank you, I'll pay online, goodbye.- Caller: First Energy
- Call type: Debt collector
- will replies to Jennifer| 1 replyit is real,it is not a scam.ive paid my bill threw this phone call and exact number several times.and its a service that does the work for several utilities, not just one specific. So all of those so sure and posting its a scam,IT IS NOT A SCAM.
- CindyThey call but never leave a message. So I appreciate all of the responses...at least I have an idea of who's calling.
- Caller: UCB
- DawnI received a call from this number today.
- Ummm...When I call this number back it asks for your to enter the number they originally called you from. I entered a bunch of bogus numbers and each time it stated that I had an overdue balance. I think the lesson here, if you get a call from this number, don't do anything over the phone. Call your electric company if you think your bill could be over due and deal with them. Then you know for a fact your hard earned money is going to the right place.
- And I guess replies to willYou work for these scammers, don't you? People are getting calls and they are not past due, overdue. IT IS A SCAM!
