I, too, just received a call from a Mrs. So and So..... I called them back, then asked them if they could hold a minute. I went about my daily routine, vacuuming, dusting, feeding the cats. Go figure, an hour later they were gone. Hmmmm, couldn't have been all that important.

They keep calling me, leaving messages on my cell phone asking for a lady who I've never even heard of. I find it odd if they're a legitimate debt collection agency, that they would be leaving messages on my phone with some pretty revelaing information in it about this woman. It's certainly not for me though. I'm 18, my credit score is a whopping "N/A"!

Had this message on my answering machine today:

"This is a message for Tracy D Lester.  If you are not Tracy D Lester please hang up or disconnect.  If you are Tracy D Lester please continue to listen to this message.  There will now be a three second pause in this message...  By continuing to listen to this message you acknowledge that you are Tracy D Lester.  You should not listen to this message so that other people cab hear it as it contains personal and private information.  There will now be a three second pause in this message to allow you to listen to this message in private...  This is Stacy from merchants Credit Guide.  This communication is from the Debt Collector.  This is an attempt to collect a debt and any information obtained will be used for that purpose.  Please contact us about an important business matter at 888-249-4134.  Once again that number is 888-249-4134.  Thank you."

    1.  The statement that staying on the line after a three second pause acknowledges that you are the person they name is a bunch of s**t...  how, as in my case, is a machine supposed to know to disconnect?

    2.  Allowing three seconds to allow the person to listen in private is funny...  If I picked up the phone, would not the message be private anyway since the phone would be to my ear?

    3.  I have had this # for over four years now.  I receive calls several times a month from "financial" institutions looking for Tracy Lester.  No matter how many times I tell the callers that I do not know the person and ask that my number be disassociated with Ms. Lester, the calls continue.

Well "Steve", I just have to ask what type of debt collection you are doing. You must be one of those slimy agencies that call people for debts that do not even exist.

This place called my grandparents over a "debt" that wasn't even an actual debt. They have no debt. They've paid everything off- the only outstanding charges they owe are for recent hospital stays (that occurred in the last month) and for their credit card (which they pay off each month). Any debts they have, they pay off in a matter of months.

This agency also tried to target ME as well, and I *KNOW* that I didn't have anything that had gone to a debt collection agency. My proof, you ask? Well, I had just purchased a new car and before that I had signed up for one of those credit programs that give you your current score as well as show all of the loans, cards and whatnot that have been taken out in your name. The only things that showed were the ones that I was currently paying and staying up to date on. There was nothing outstanding- these people were lying in the hopes of getting my personal information.

You "sir", are either a complete fool that assumes that everyone who calls claiming to be a collection agency is legit or you are someone who works for this company, hoping to scam a few people into paying for bills that they never charged.

I've received these calls addressed to me, my sisters, my grandparents as well as for people that don't even live at the house- people we've never even heard of. As they get your name (I told them my name out of stupidity, trying to get them to stop calling for the wrong people- as did my sisters), they start calling & trying to claim that you owe something.

I do not owe any outstanding charges. I have a credit report to back me up on this. Neither does my grandparents or anyone else in my family. (Anyone who might have, has paid those outstanding debts off, so these people are trying to get you to pay the same bill twice!) These people will try to scam you into paying money that you do not owe! Even for the very few people here who have posted, saying that it was for a debt in their past, the debts must be from so long ago that the original debt owners have given up on it.

Once I tried going along with it to see what they were trying to get at, only to have them try to collect my information from the companies I currently have loans with for my car & credit card! Since I *know* I don't owe anything outstanding on those loans, having paid them up to the current bill, there's no reason for them to ask for that info... unless they're trying to trick me into giving the information so they can switch me over to a higher loan without my consent!! (They tried telling me that I "had" to do this, assuming that I'm a sheeple who didn't know any better. Just in case, I called my credit company & informed them of these people & said that they should look into them & that if they call trying to pretend that I gave them permission that I most certainly didn't.)

Even if you try to block these numbers from your phone, they'll call back under new numbers. There needs to be new laws about schmucks like these- this is complete & total harassment!

And the worst part? I've never even done anything to warrant getting these calls, neither has anyone else in my family!!!

I've been getting calls from this outfit for months. They generally leave a message in a very lethargic voice, repeating the name of the person they are trying to contact (not me). I just keep deleting the messages but they don't give up. I'd love to tell them off but that would just encourage them.

It is too bad that Comcast won't allow me to simply block this number (and any other obnoxious calls). The technology is there, they just don't provide access. I suppose this is an example of telemarketers sticking together, as Comcast is a pretty rabid telemarketer too (although they stopped calling me when I told them too -- a couple of times).

I am surprised at the conviction expressed numerous times here that people with debt deserve this treatment.

The laws of this country have become horribly skewed against the poor and middle class.  Corporations and wealthy individuals frequently declare bankruptcy and just keep on livin' large--

But ordinary folks can NEVER get away from student loans and most credit-card debt under current law.  Google "bankruptcy student loan Brunner Test" if you want the technical details--

Yet Trillions upon Trillions are lavished on the banks and military and fascist regimes, as they cut unemployment and social security and mandate worthless exploitative "health insurance."

    Can't you see?

We turn against each other as the screw tightens, and they keep walking away with our money and lives and souls.

    Good luck, all.

15 USC 1692d Sec. 806. states “A debt collector may not engage in any conduct the natural consequence of which is to harass, oppress, or abuse any person in connection with the collection of a debt. Without limiting the general application of the foregoing, the following conduct is a violation of this section:"
Specifically, "(5)  Causing a telephone to ring or engaging any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with intent to annoy, abuse, or harass any person at the called number.”

Report them to the Federal Trade Commission either online of at 1-877-FTC-HELP.  Let's see what happens.  I've already reported one company on 6/25/10 and am in the process of updating my report again today for harassing phone calls.

So sick of calls on debts not mine. I find you debt collectors funny Steve, you are no different then the jerk that calls at 6 in the evening trying to sell garbage bags or cemetery lots. Your minimum wage job really impresses me.  You probably have more debt than anyone in these logs you find so humorous. Hopefully I get a call from you some day, I have a wonderful air horn right by the phone for jerks like you :)

I will repost this becasue it is true. Hey Steve! Are you the golden boy? You must have done reall well for yourself to end up in debt collection.

Did you ever think that people dispute the charge for one reason or another and the company refuses to do anything about it or you paid it and have the proof but no matter what you do to show the proof it does not help? How about someone who becomes ill and cannot work because of it and cannot pay it because of that. I guess you never had any of these problems. Sometimes it has nothing to do with not wanting to pay your bills sometimes there are circumstances that prevent you from paying on time or what have you. Yes a debt is owed but foul language and people being rude is not right. You need to take those rose colored glasses off and look at the world.

The recording says they are calling for a member of our family that has not lived at this number for almost 20 years; at the end it gives this phone # to call if you want to report a wrong # and be removed from their list; but when we try to call the 888# we get a recording that says our call can not be completed as dialed.
