    Same story as most indicate below ... Interesting that this is the first time someone somewhere out there has linked current number with old old maiden name. Only the US Dept of Edu has this info... Hhmm?
    Definitely scam that needs to be reported. See NY Times Magazine Aug 17, 2014 issue for more on the LUCRATIVE business of debt collection. Most funds paid never reach the actual debtee. Collection is perpetual regardless of payment and this industry is run by thieves and Wall Street. Do not act on the fear they perpetuate!

    Just got the same exact message and am so grateful for these posts.  I know logically that this is not the way a legal process works and that it is most likely a scam, but it is hard not getting a little rattled anyway.  Looks like a new scam that popped up this August... they are busy bees this month finding people to rob.  I hope that they are stopped before older people or gullible people get swindled.  Pretty smart using different numbers to call from... harder to look up the scam that way.

    I received a call on a shared home phone.  I do not give out the home phone number as a contact number, I give my cell number.  The person said I had a complaint filed against me, left a complaint # and 888-283-5647 to return the call.  I called the number and after several rings, got a voice message stating to leave my name, number and case number.  I will report this number to the CO Attorney General's office.

    The call came to me at the following number : 1-602-455-1101. It made reference to 1-888-283-5647 just as other folks here have stated. I received the same messages as other folks as well, including the statement that my name and social security number is in their possession. Considering the fact that some of the folks who have posted their complaints here on this caller and said that they spoke to the people over the phone and that they DID provide valid ss numbers for those folks, that would have me a bit worried. Absolutely no one should have those numbers. I don't provide my number except for legit stuff that I make certain is not a scam.

    I keep getting calls from them as well. In my case, they didn't even get my name right! Clearly it's a hoax. I really wish there was something that could be done about them. It's a fairly regular thing for them to call me about once a month.

    One more thing too: I should say the 888 number is what they left for me to call. The call actually came from a different number: 310-579-6796. California based.

    Got a call from 1-888-283-5647. They left a message on my machine saying call back hit #8 and provide a complaint # they provided.  When I called back after 4pm a machine came on saying "you have called after hours". They never provided the name of business.  A few days passed and I was able to get a live person.  They answered the phone saying "please provide your complaint #". They never identified the business, nature of call.  I gave the complaint #. She said I owed 1700.00 and needed to pay the amount.  I asked her who the business was I owed.  She got really rude with me, started yelling at me.  I tried to ask her a question and she cut me off and said if I didn't respect her she would disconnect the call.  I explained to her I had been scammed in the past and wanted further information before I paid this amount.  She said "save your song and dance for court, I will draw the papers up and you will be served today" and she hung up on me.  I waited several hours and called back.  A different person answered asking me to provide my complaint #.  I said I just had a few questions and wanted to know the name of the business and the nature of the call.  She put me on hold, came back and said the business was Standard Mediation and they were collecting for Bank One.  I asked her what their business done.  She said they mediate between the business and person who owes the money to resolve the matter out of court.  She said I recognize your phone # as ***********. and I have your ss# as ************* and you have owed this amount since 1994.  I asked her the amount I owed and she said 670.58. I asked her to send me proof of the amount I owe. She said she did not have that information.  I explained to her I called earlier and the lady said I owed 1700.00 and refused to give me information I had the right to know.  I said I wanted enough information so I could check out the matter.  She said she was reporting me for refusal to pay and I would be receiving court papers.  I said I would wait for the court papers and explained I worked through the court system and this would benefit me having proper paperwork.  She instantly hung up on me.  At no time when they answered the phone did they say "This is an attempt to collect a debt, any information provided will be used to collect a debt, this call may be monitored for security purposes" When a debt is being collected this is what they are to say when they answer or you answer the phone.

    Like the rest of you I received a message on my phone about complaint documentation with my ssn on it with a complaint number of 1090739.  I pushed 8 to respond as directed and got no response.  I then called the 888 number and let it ring for 10 times and again got no response.  I then called the originating phone number, 206-212-0457.  Once again I let the phone ring 10 times and still got no response.   So, I did a reverse phone look up on my computer and discovered the  206 area code number originated from two places....Seattle WA, and Des Moines, IA.  (Not sure how they do this, probably some kind of overlay system).  Anyway, after all this I simply typed "Find 888-283-5647" into my search screen, hit enter, and Bingo!!  Here I am with a whole group of new acquaintances from across the country with one commonality;  that 888 number...Boy, do I love the internet, LOL.  I do wish I could have talked to a human though, because I have had neither a Bank 1 account of any kind or description, nor a maiden name.

    i got the same call from 1-286-213-8620, with the typical automated message stating they had a complaint against me, with my name and ss# attached to it, and wanted me to call 888-283-5647 with a case # they gave me. i called it back, they gave me a address that was in my area but in no way ever related to me.  they also said the dept was from the late 90's and went to collections in 2004.  i asked them to send me some proof of the dept with my signature attached.  they said i would be getting papers served, i told them i would be contacting the attorney generals office with this information.  i got hung up on!  we will see what happens.  (never give or confirm personal information over the phone, i think this is a scam!)

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    •Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
