This is Ohio Edison for me.  They call once a month to let me know that the meter guy will be out the next day so that I can have my dog contained.  This is not a scam number.

The number is for all these power companies.  If type into Google First Energy Power Outage and look in the left top of the screen, it shows the companies they represent.  They at minimum Ohio, Pa. and Jersey.  I got a call from this number this morning.  In Ohio we had over 100,000 people without power yesterday.  They are either notifying you that your power is back on because you reported it out,

It's an automated call from JCP&L to remind you of an upcoming meter reading and to make sure the dogs are inside and/or restrained. Not spam.

Receive this call every month from Ohio Edison. They say I asked them to call me when they are coming to read the meter. They claim I have a dog and want me to make sure the dog is put up when the meter reader comes. I don't remember calling them and I don't have a dog.

It's some automated system calling for my power company. Saying this is West Penn power. You have a meter reading scheduled for the next business day. You either asked us to provide this information or have a dog at your location... blah blah blah. I have no pet and did not ask for courtesy calls.  The caller id says Illuminating Co. I didn't answer it not knowing what it was. Really weird. I actually haven't had any kind of pet in years lol.

If this is a legitimate call, then they need to leave a message and not just hang up.  Because they did not leave a message, they are now blocked on my phone.

no power company workers ever have to enter a home for meter reading purposes like this caller is saying they need to

In my area, washington pa 15301, it's to report a power outage to west penn power. By the way, West Penn power has the most frustrating, disorganized voice mail menu that I have ever encountered and that is saying a LOT. They are disorganized on the internet too.
All I wanted to do was call and talk to an actual person to tell them about my Tree ready to fall on a high tension (pole to Pole at the top) power line. West Penn's tree service contractor was working almost next door; he said to call someone or other but didn't have the phone number, and maybe they would tell them (the contractor) to spend an extra 20 minutes and slice off the branch ready to destroy the line. But no phone number on the net. All I could do was email them.

TIP for entrepeneurs: If a company these days really wants to be successful they should spend a few bucks and get a real person that knows how to direct a call to answer the phone!

There was no power outage -- YET -- but that was the closest number I could find to solve my problem. Well, I've done the best I could.

This is not a scam.  I got two calls from this number and in both cases voice mail messages were left.  In this particular case, it was Penelec calling to notify me of a two-hour planned power outage to do overall power grid upgrades in my area in the coming week.

    First Energy Customer
This is legit. I called First Energy Customer Service and because the all the lines were busy they said they would call back within 3-6 minutes. In 3 minutes they called from this number. I agree that they should change the caller ID to First Energy.

So, did your power company actually do the upgrade? Lots of people saying that's why they called but that doesn't mean it really happened. Would be helpful to know. Thanks!

First Energy or one of its several subsidiaries has some sort of event you need to be alerted about.  Usually its either there's power outage in your area or they're coming to read your meter the next day, put you dog away.  You can opt out of most of these calls by calling them back or going to their website.
