- guy| 1 replyI never pick up numbers I don't know, and this number just rang in. They did leave a voicemail, and listening to that, it was Citi for a card I have, and I had just made a large purchase - it was the fraud department checking on it.
So, yes, always a good idea to not answer random numbers, but listen to voicemails. This one was legit - scams generally won't leave a message, and if they do, go around it by calling the appropriate number directly (# on the back of the card, etc).- Caller: Citibank
- Call type: Valid
- Actually.. replies to guy...scammers are known to spoof legitimate numbers, so it's always best to contact your financial institution directly or call the number on the back of your card.

Be Safe, Not Sorry
Rather than believe the posts in this thread, or the words of an anonymous caller,
if you are notified of a problem with your card,
CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD
Even though the number in this thread might belong to your card issuer, the scammers can easily spoof what appears on your CallerID, and attempt to get your precious ID and card data!

- Guest-Citi CardCall for my CitiBank Card. Called the main CitiBank Fraud line off Citi.com; they confirmed it was a legit call to confirm that the card was opened by me and wasn't fraudulent. The Reference number given in the voicemail was asked for by the Citi representative when they were verifying my identity. Legitimate call, but I recommend calling Citi directly to speak with their fraud department.
- Caller: Alerting me of potential Fraud
- Call type: Valid
- CFEA gentleman called stating that Citicard had detected possible fraudulent activity on my account. That turned out to be a misunderstanding and the charges were indeed OK. I called the Citicard Customer Service and verified that the call was legitimate, but I immediately changed the password on the account anyway. Be aware, though, that it would appear that scammers may be spoofing this caller ID and number for their own nefarious purposes.
- Caller: Citigroup Fraud Dept

- Jane DoeGot a voice mail about a fraud alert on my Home Depot Citibank card with a 1-866 call back number. I do not have a Home Depot card. Looked up the official phone number and called. Turns out someone did try to open a card with my name and social and it was a legit fraud warning.
- Call type: Valid
- LizGot call about suspicious activity on Exxon Mobil card from this number. Have 4 digit code and number to call back but also said to call number on back of card. Had just asked for another authorized user card for daughter so they were checking it. So it was a legitimate call

- FranciscoA guy named Diante called with 'the Home Depot Consumer Protection' and left a voicemail message that sounded suspicious and unprofessional in regards to my 'Home Depot account'. He mispronounced my name. He left me an 866-242-0838 telephone number and a reference number asking me to call them back. I called Home Depot, which is managed by CitiBank, and they had no information about the call. If you get a call from this number, do not give them your info. I don't even have a Home Depot credit card account.

- AnthonyAsk yourself how this could be legit when it's for Macy's, Shell, Home Depot, Citi Bank, etc, etc especially when some of the people don't even have the account they are calling fraudulent activity for. I never applied to Home Depot, application is still sitting in the original unopened envelope. Fraud department calls about an opened account from FL? Hell nah I don't live anywhere remotely near that. Also, ask yourself why the number they are calling from is different than the number you are told to call. Like, not even a little different, like different department different, but absolutely different from somewhere else.
