Ask the caller for his or her name, company, street address, telephone number, and professional license number. Many states require debt collectors to be licensed. Check the information the caller provides you with your state officials, or the state in which the debt collector holds a license. If the caller refuses or is unable to provide you with information about his company, or if you can’t verify the information he provides, do not give money to the caller or company.

Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." This notice must include:
    The amount of the debt
The name of the creditor you owe
A description of certain rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, consider requesting this information in writing or seeking assistance before paying the debt to make sure the debt, and the company, are valid.

Tip: You can consider sending the collector a letter requesting the information by using one of the CFPB's sample letters. You can also submit a complaint to the CFPB or you can contact your state Attorney General’s office.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Tip: You can use this sample letter to write a letter demanding the debt collector stop contacting you. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Tip: If you're having trouble with debt collection, you can submit a complaint with the CFPB online or by calling (855) 411-CFPB (2372).

    Name was close...
My work line had a voicemail with an automated woman's voice looking for <first name> <last name>.  The last name is mine but the first name wasn't.  Something about exciting new technology blah blah.  I can call back at an 866 # or visit their website, etc.

They called and didn't leave a voice mail so I called them back, only to be asked for my son and when I refused they hung up on me. They would not tell the nature of the call either. I called back only to have a different woman ask me the same thing and I told them I would not give any information until I knew why they called.i told her I refused to give her any information until I knew what the matter was about, then she got very mad and hung up on me. I plan to call back again and speak with a supervisor.

Just like everybody else, they call and call and call and CALL. At least once a day for 2/3 months now. Never picked up. never left a voicemail. Until one day, they called my work company. Asked for my ssn off the bat, and I wouldn't give it to them. I constantly asked what they wanted and they wouldn't give me a clear answer, only to continue to harass me about my ssn. I hung up right after. I have no clue how they got my company's number. Very creepy and annoying.

I think performance sounds about right regarding co name. No other info from them but they wanted to verify who I was and then I hung up. I blocked said number. I've gotten so many of these.

Annoying caller... repeat calls.  I have no debt, and have never had any debt!  They have no legitimate reason to be calling me!  So they are obviously just dialing for dollars!   Given they want info like SSN, etc... they could even be a phishing scammer posing as a debt collector.

This number has called me daily for the past month and never left a message. I finally called back (as I have family with CA phone numbers) and they told me my name and then asked for the last four digits of my SSN "to verify my identity". I told them that I would NOT give them that information until they told me 1) who exactly they were 2) why a company would need my SSN and 3) what exactly the company did. The man on the other line became very agitated, refused to give me any information. When I told him I was going to hang up, he SHOUTED at me: "Well! We're just going to keep calling you until you give us your information!!!"

    Yeah.. Block!
This is obviously a scam. DO NOT CALL BACK! BLOCK IMMEDIATELY.

So EVERYONE knows this number belongs to FEDLOAN-federal student loan debt collectors. They will NOT tell you any info until  you give SS number. They are not allowed to give any info unless supplied with SS number. They suck. They are relentless. And they will call until their fingers fall off from dialing. How do I know....because I have been dealing with them for 2 years. They do not give up under any circumstances. And if you owe the federal govt student loan money they will never, ever stop calling. If you do not owe then send a certified letter, return receipt required telling them to stop calling immediately. Only then can you go after them for the repeated calls.

They are now calling an IRS office number.  We collect money too!  We have enough scammers to deal with on a daily basis, we don't need anymore.
