- EmilyTake their information, their company, their name, a phone number and address, the company they are calling about, and their phone and address. Turn this information over to the FDCPA. If they have been informed of a dispute (your identity being stolen is you disputing the debt) they are by law required to cease and desist contact until it is determined that it is your debt. YOu can contact an FDCPA lawyer who in most cases does it for free. You can then sue everyone involved. If you would like to go the nicer route, ask them for information to send your proof (police report etc) and they again have to cease and desist until it is proven to be a valid debt. Don't let them bully you, NEVER admit it's your debt, or pay them a dime. If you do then they have grounds to make you pay. YES making a payment on a stolen account makes you liable for it!!!!!
- WhyMebe warned if your ID is stolen and you are in Public Housing. I ended up being given a double whammy; I owed over $2,500.00 in rent to Public Housing & have had to give Public Housing copies of every single bit of documentation I had in relation to trying to prove I was not working in another state. The person who steals & sells your SS # is long gone by the time you file a report.

- WalkerMy Yahoo! ID has been stolen by someone who has used it within the last 24 hours to send an "Urgent Message" about a cousin in Italy needing money for cancer treatment/bone marrow transplant. The e-mail went to a cousin of mine, and he wrote back to the person using my ID! He actually got an answer!
So, as advised I am reporting this to the local police and to the FTC. I have reason to believe that the person involved is an attorney who actually bills himself as someone who handles identity theft! - Abby JonesI recently experienced having my identity stolen and it was a nightmare to clean up. All of our info unfortunately is out there in this day and age. I started using passcode.info to monitor my background, credit, etc because I certainly don't want to go through all that again!

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/facing-debt-collection-know-your-rights - AlexA stolen identity is absolutely nothing to shake a stick at! If you have ever been a victim, you know exactly what I'm talking about here. Don't think for a minute that there is a high rate of prosecution here either. In fact most identity thieves hardly ever have consequences to pay for stealing and spending someone else's money!! Fun stuff here, right? Let's think for a minute about the victims of identity theft that never make a financial recovery. Hopefully, after my comment get's graded for spelling, it will sink in and get people thinking about the serious nature of this pathetic crime.
