- bob replies to Helio| 1 replyIf you are worried because some of the fraudsters who call you can recite part of your social security number, address or other personal information correctly then do what I did & put a FREEZE on all 3 of your credit reports. Just go to transunion.com, experian.com, & equifax.com. Look for "how to place a credit freeze" or similar phrase, click on it, & follow the instructions. It takes about 10 minutes per website. Two of the 3 sites allowed me to place a freeze FREE OF CHARGE & the one that did charge only cost a few dollars. It only takes a few minutes to suspend your credit freeze when you need to apply for credit (or you need to give someone access to your credit report, like a potential employer) & you can set the freeze to resume on the date of your choice (or not at all). While your credit freeze is active, your current creditors will be able to report your payments as usual but NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO (1) ACCESS YOUR REPORT OR (2) OPEN NEW CREDIT ACCOUNTS IN YOUR NAME if a credit check is required to open the new account. Your credit score won’t be effected. This is what credit ”locking” agencies that you see advertised on TV (the one that comes to mind has the initials LL) do for you but they charge you monthly. Why pay them to do what you can easily do for yourself? Just remember 2 things: (1) You want to place a credit FREEZE & NOT a fraud alert, & (2) Keep the password each credit agency gives you (or the ones you choose) when you place the freeze in a safe place because you will need them when you want to suspend this service. If you apply for credit really frequently, then a credit freeze may not be for you. But, if you are like me & only apply for credit occasionally, then a credit freeze can help prevent your identity from being stolen & used to open credit accounts in your name even if they have your complete social security number. I put a freeze on my children’s & grandparent’s credit reports to protect them.
- Sonia replies to rosequeenrosequeen -- When you stated, "They are most likely foreighners trying to get you to wire them money...." it brought to mind a call that one my roommates received early in the morning a few years back at 6 am about ME. I was in bed asleep. The caller (with an accent) said "Sonia has been kidnapped, her purse and all her belongings were taken in London, and she asked me to call you so you can send her some much needed money so she can come back home." My roommate, came to my room, woke me up and she asked the caller to repeat the message so that "money could be sent to me, etc. (just to make the caller repeat the message). I got on the phone and said, "[***], you are a liar because I am NOT in London nor anywhere else!! I have just been woken up with you on the phone trying to scam my friends." The jerk hung up. A LOT of my friends received the same scam call about me. Since they know me well, they KNEW it was a lie. But, they all called me to tell me what happened. Yes, there are scammers EVERYWHERE, even at the companies YOU CALL. I called my phone carrier the other day about a so-called Locker which was going to be discontinued on a certain date. Nothing they asked me to do worked. But, what was really weird was when I was asked for my ID and Password. Since I HAD CALLED THE COMPANY, I thought nothing of it and I had already been 1-1/2 hours on the phone with the "Tech Dept." trying to access the blasted "Locker." so I gave them my PW. NOTHING was accomplished on my end. That is when I KNEW I had messed up, so I will have to change my PW.
Everyone BEWARE of scams even from companies you do business with and which YOU call about a problem. You CAN be scammed by them too!! - DCM5 replies to PaybackActually, its foreign scammers that are the worst. They try to be anything , including debt collectors for the government . And since there is too much IP spoofing, its one reason why the only number I give out is my google voice number. And if I don't think I either know the person, or they should not have the number, they will find their calls left unanswered. Deliberately and on purpose. When used properly, GV makes for a d*mn good bullsh!t filter.. And, collectors whom cant contact you and wont send data to your mail address to validate the debt are more than likely just scammers. Sometimes, scammers will go out of their way to use an intermediary to convince their mark that they are legit.. The intermediary may not know them as well as they think they do, always request documentation from collectors to validate their debt, or purchase of a debt. In some states, if the debt is not too old, you can even demand to deal with the original creditor [if its valid] and if its not, disposition them however you please within the boundaries of the law. Also, give them as little data as possible, if they are scammers, some may have a side rackett of ID theft going on as well.
- Dalenomad replies to teachr14206First thing obviously is to change your phone number and make the number unlisted..
Second, go to the County Sheriff office where woman lives, Bring her with to fill out a police report. If the "niece" got the lady's money thru fraud, neice will owe woman and spend time, hopefully.
Get to the Sheriff. Document everything too. Date and time and event descriptions - Pigman replies to 800AdminI also got this and know that I need to reload the page. What is a "contlet token"?
- SICK of itI have a tenacious hacker, whom I know, who has hacked all my email accounts and 7 phones. 5 of the phones he did remotely. My thing is that he insists on doing things in my name using my information. I have traced some websites he is involved in and when you click on contact it goes directly into my you tube account or in my Facebook page. He records everything, takes pictures/videos, and backs up just about every key I touch. It's like we are joined at the hip 24-7. I've only hesitated going to the police because some of which he has taped is of a sensitive nature and am afraid of repercussions. This is still identity theft right?
- appleseatingblapples replies to Amber Ann PahlPlus various assaults not listed!!!!! Who deserves all of that? Obviously the police were lied to and records were tampered with and altered.
- yoda replies to Ali have noticed that too on these job search sights that you need to click and agree to calls from telemarketers. i refuse to agree to accepting emails, texts or cell phone calls.
- LuckydogI had my identity stolen, but my credit was so bad the thief begged me to take it back. Bada Bing! No, seriously, my wife had her debit card information skimmed at a Kroger gas pump. They cloned a new card, but didn't use it until she got her retirement check, then they bought a plane ticket from Little Rock to L.A. Since the bank was that one in the southeast with the sickening pea green logo, they would not give us a provisional credit like most other banks do. She had to wait until their investigation was complete to get the money back. Bank of America gives you a provisional credit, then investigates to see if it was fraud.
