How to report annoying Telemarketing calls.

What if it is just a robo-call and when you call the number back to see who it is, the message is that it is an "unregistered number?"    I have been on the do not call list since 2003 and just re-registered my number but recently have been getting 20 or more calls a day.   Sometimes there is a person on the line "replying to my request for information on health care" and sometimes it is a recording that goes nowhere or sometimes there is no one there.  the calls are from a lot of different numbers with different locations listed, but they are all "unregistered" numbers.

Talk to them, play the victim...be nice as can be....and ask them to provide a call back number. The call back number they give will be their real working number. It can sometimes be traced to the actual owner. Post the number here under the proper listing. That way we can find out who's behind your unwelcome calls.

This is great information and I applaud you for posting!   But how do we go about doing the same in Canada?  Quite often we in Canada who have taken steps to reduce telemarketing calls (we are on the do not call list in Canada, we have unlisted numbers here in Canada, privacy/blocking features on our phones etc...) - but someone in Canada sells their contact list to someone in the U.S.A. and we end up getting telemarketing calls from the U.S.A.  Although we are unlisted here in Canada, our unlisted system does not work in the USA, nor does our do not call list.  For example I am getting calls from an area code 647 which I believe to be a U.S.A area code.  How can we get the calls stopped from up here in Canada?  Any advice would be appreciated!

Since most of these criminals use caller ID spoofing to make calls, even though 647 is a US area code, the call could be coming from anywhere in the world, even from your next door neighbor.  Also they don't need a list, they just have a computer dial every number in your area code. Work to get your government to take action and force the phone companies to do something about it.  Use call blockers or call blocking phones, or download a free call blocking app.

Navient bank keeps calling despite requests to stop. I'm currently repaying a student loan via The U.S. dept of education and Navient expects me to pay them and the U. S. Dept of education. I have asked them to stop calling since I'm taking care of this, but they continue to call. Sometimes they  call 4, 5 times a day or more!!

You need to send them a certified, return receipt letter telling them to cease and desist calling you and send them the information on your loan.  You should also hire a consumer lawyer to sue them under the FDCPA since they are trying to collect an amount not due.

Ah the coward has reared its ugly head again.  And when are you going to stop lying?  I would ask if your mother taught you not to lie, but you either did not know her or she was on the street corner selling herself 24 hours a day to feed her drug habit while she was pregnant which resulted in you.

    John replies to Well,
I tried this a few times.  Failed everytime.  The number they give is always fake because they know people will just report it.  Sometimes it can even be a number of another home that is unaware of what is even going on.  This is why they ask "When I call you back?" if you pretend to be interested and want to talk to them again.  I have call screening setup, so any number that calls without a caller ID will be redirected to my voicemail.

I guess I don't see the point of reporting calls that are clearly from India.  It's not like US law enforcement can do anything about it.

Of course enforcers can't do anything .... if you never alert them to a fraud problem. Let's briefly take one category of telefraud, the fake tech support thugs, a largely South Asian breed.

Enforcement actions don't happen in a vacuum. As the Consumer Sentinel Network compiles consumer complaints, regulators get a better idea of what problems to resolve and who should get sued first.

I nearly forgot to add that Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit joined the fight a year ago this week, painting other targets where the Feds left off.

While unrelated to illegal sales calls, I would add that my largest payback in a civil suit stemmed from "calls that [were] clearly from India". If you do nothing, you get nothing, and forfeit the right to complain.
