Microsoft: There is something wrong with your computer...

Got a call from this number a couple of months ago, in the evening.  I answered because I had never seen all zeros before, and thought perhaps the caller ID wasn't working.  Upon answering, a man with an Indian accent told me he was calling about my "Windows computer".  I told him I thought he must have the wrong number, as we don't have anything with Windows even on it - only Linux and then two Macs.  He proceeded to totally creep me out after that, begging me to please not tell him it was the wrong number, asking why do I own a Mac, that I was breaking his heart, asking my age, and that if I were his age he would make me his girlfriend.  Hung up, and was so creeped out I considered calling the police.  Didn't do so, haven't heard from this number since, and hope to never hear from them again.  It's bad enough to try to scam people, but to do something so creepy... Ugh!

What phone number did he call you from? I just got a call from 1-760-705-8888 said he worked for NKSoft.com but that site is fake. Even the address given on the site is fake, it belongs to a McBain Systems out of Dallas.

I got a call from them today. At the beginning i was told by the man [who had a heavy Indian accent] that it was a technician or someone from Windows and that my computer was downloading and sending out malicious software. I told him several times that it was not downloading nor sending out anything recently. He asked if my computer was on [which i had a hard time understanding him throughout the call] and i said it was on but later i hanged up [and i am glad that i did indeed]. I later Googled this issue and found this thread on this website [i use this website very often to discuss calls from various numbers and to see what others are saying.

Got a similar call, I ended up playing along to see what they got in store. They said that they were from something along the lines of microsoft located in San Francisco, which is very suspicious considering that the phone call doesn't seem professional at all however it was not that weird hearing the caller with a foreign accent since companies outsource customer service, call centers. They said that my computer was sending them error messages, something about the i.p address and they want me to follow their directions. The phone call was completely a joke, I hung up and they called again within a minute with a different phone number. I asked for the manager and they said they they were going to transfer me, one second later it was the same guy, thinking that I can't tell difference saying that he's the manager. Ended up yelling at him for his foolishness of calling back and thinking that I would believe him. I googled what he said before he called the second time and found this post, made me even sure that it that was a scam so I told him straight up that I won't believe him and this phone call is a scam. He got me so mad to the point where I used one profane word and he told me to shut up and swore in return. I'm pretty sure microsoft wouldn't swear at their customers right? By the way, the phone numbers are 360-633-9006 and 253-236-2020, both appeared as washington on my caller id.

India will not do anything to crack down on these crimes but they gladly take millions of dollars in foreign aid money from the United States every year.  Our government will never suspend that aid because they do not want to offend our "very good friends".  Would not surprise me if some of this money helps to build out even more of these criminal call centers that prey on people all over the world.

I live in Alberta and I have been getting these calls since hackers got into playstation---told the people I don't have a computor but they insist I do because they are getting error messages--my brother works for Telus and I called him on my cell and asked if he could trace this call that was on my land-line--when he started to get rude with me Telus broken into the conversation and reported that the trace is now activated--he hung up real quick--I figure a scam for a scam-- took a week but now they are calling again on an unavailable line and I figure I will come up with a new scam to get them but this is sad---when the phone is for my convienence not theirs and they think because I have a phone they can call anytime and it is their right.

I received the same call this week. These guys are secure in saying they are working with Microsoft and their website even has the Microsoft logo. My question is... just by going on their website without doing anything can they access my computer? What they really want is for you to give them money for them to fix your computer that no another virus protection can pick up. Their number is
858-102-3252. After multiple phone calls I told them to take me off their list and I knew they were a scam. The guy insisted it was not a scam.

I got a call today telling me my computer is infected and I asked for his number so I could call back.  He said he was calling from Toronto.  I checked the number ....253 220 7222 which I checked and found it to be in Washington state.  My son called the guy back and questioned him about his location and then the guy [Indian] said it was the satellite phone system!!  I didn't take the offer of $173 to fix my computer.  The guy said the Windows XP had expired and I told him to call back in 2 hours.  Meanwhile I called Microsoft [located in India] and he said I do indeed have infections.  He would fix my computer for $99.  He said Windows XP does not expire.  Now I am reluctant to have anything done at all.  Any advise?

Advice? Yes-Disregard the call. It is a scam. XP does not expire, but has been updated numerous times. The updates can be accomplished from Microsoft's website. Microsoft, as far as I know, is no longer supporting XP as it has been superseded by various later operating systems. Perhaps a visit to this page will help: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vi ... er-from-viruses

Good luck and fret not. Those scammers prey on fear, so keep doing what you're doing and gain knowledge.

Try this for a response:  I use a Mac.  Or...I use Linux.

Of course, the sad thing is that some of these scammers do not seem to understand that there might be other operating systems in the world besides Windows.

So the best response in my opinion is:  What computer?  I can't afford a computer!

Yes, I get them for the last month. Real nasty pains in the ass. They use Dell and Microsoft's name. Last call today they said if the calls will not stop unless I sent some money. What can we do to get these guys?

Unless you clicked on a hacked e-mail link, got a virus through instant messaging, visited a hacked website or webpage, downloaded/installed a software with virus in it, there's no way your computer would be infected.
