Microsoft: There is something wrong with your computer...
- MrOzBarry| 329 repliesAbout once a week I get a phone call from a person claiming to be working for Microsoft, and apparently they are receiving reports that there is something wrong with my computer. Their phone number is blocked, but I believe they are calling out of either Toronto or Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
The person (I get the same guy every time) is very pushy, and frequently notes that he doesn't want me to buy anything. I haven't let the conversation get very far, but I believe he wants me to download software off the internet to fix my computer problems - I'm assuming this is not Microsoft software, but may be a key-logger or another form of malware.
I have asked him to remove my phone number from their "list" but this person refuses every time. The real problem is that I am a linux user, so I know, this not Microsoft (what company would call users on an individual basis for reported problems?). Also, they refuse to tell me how they got my phone number (I only activate windows, I never register it [thus never send my phone number out to Microsoft], nor do I give away my phone number easily via the internet).
If they call again, I'll try and get their phone number by asking, so I can post it here.
Anyone else been getting these calls (I don't know if it's local to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, or if it's something bigger)?
Take care,

The users say the callers have Indian accent. Did your caller have an accent? Might be the same outfit or something else entirely. - Vivien| 2 repliesJust had the same call, man with foreign accent said how important it is for me to hear his message re problems with my computer. Assumed it was a scam and put the phone down on him.
- JoI just had the same call. From a lady with an Indian accent. I said it was okay 'My husband is in IT...' and then she immediately hung up. Def a scam
- Mick| 10 repliesThe scammers may be at ztechsolutions.com.tl. They want to sell you their "protection" package to protect their income stream. Possibly based in NY state along the Hudson R. They all speak with heavy E. Indian accents and often use 1-000-000-0000.
- Mick replies to Mick| 7 repliesThey claim to be "affiliated" w/ Microsoft.
- TheToxicAvenger| 25 repliesTo any of the previous posters, "Before you started receiving these phone calls regarding a computer malfunction/virus from a man with an Indian accent, did you call a support line for your ISP?" That is when I started getting these calls and I am thinking THAT is how these scumbags got my phone number in the first place.
- Azza| 17 repliesI am in sydney australia. I am getting the same calls first a female with indian accent telling me my pc was infected..I laughed and told her i was an IT tech and hang up the calls then kept coming so i got pisssst and started fighting with them then a guy with indian accent started calling 10 times a day saying he will fuk my mother ect now knowing he is stired up i am having fun with him stiring him up more..of course it is a scam but it worries me about the people that don't know much about pc's and could be fooled by it... My number is listed so i guess thats how they got it. But all should beware I have read other forums and it appears they trick people into giving them remote access, then implant a trojan with a keystroke recorder and then steal your bank details and fleece your money...hehehe i am going to continue to have fun with this joker...:~P
- Tired of scams| 12 repliesJust recieved a phone call from 409/356-7996 claiming to be "Global Tech something or other" regarding my Microsoft Computer. At the end of each of his sentences he asked "ok?" This man was very hard to understand with his broken English. (He sounded Asian) He told me that Microsoft contacted his company about a virus on my computer. Please go to my computer now and get online and he will "send" some software to me. I said "no, I don't think so...this sounds like a scam to me" and hung up.
He immedietly called back and asked, in pretty good English this time, why I hung up on him. When I said, "I told you, this sounds like a scam to me", he asked why.
I first asked how he got my phone number...he said from Microsoft when I registered my computer. (his broken English was back now) I know this is wrong, because I never give my home phone number out. He then said something about my version of windows being XP or 7. Ah Ha!! I told him I didn't have XP or 7.....he asked me why I didn't and which one I had. Ah Ha again!! "You should know what I have if Microsoft gave you my information." I said my "goodbyes" and hung up.
I really believe that there is a 99% chance this was a scam .....which leaves 1% that it is not. If this was that 1%, I will take my chances with a virus..... I'll bet a lot of people fall for this 1. because the word "virus" scares them and 2. the man is hard to understand. - DaFox| 2 repliesKeep in mind, they only way someone could legitimately get your person phone number by "detecting your computer IP has a virus" would be via a court order submitted to your ISP..... which means all these cold calls are 100% scam, they are phishing you not even know if you have a computer to begin with.
- trude| 1 replyBeen receiving the calls all day about 'malware' on my computer. All callers have an East Indian accent.
When I received the second call I decided to ask pointed questions. The clerk answered "mam" "mam" "mam" to the basic direct questions instead of giving a straight answer.
He handed the call over to a 'manager'.
I asked who they were representing. The manager said "affiliated" will Microsoft and Dell.
Phone numbers and websites I was given include:
204 272 8888
teche4pc.com
www.ammyy.com
All tried and failed to get me to go to my computer to give them information. - GimmeabreakgoatblowerAsk them for their HST number... If they lie, the caller changes from a pest to a tax fraud... then call it in to RevCanada and the RCMP... being a federal crime, they'll look into it between donuts...
- AnneThere's a "Microsoft Thread" at 800Notes- 206-445-6568, they just called. SCAM.
- Robert replies to MrOzBarry| 1 replyI got the same phone call about a week ago. It's a scam to get you to buy a second layer security software program that you really don't need.
The call came from 1-777-988-0996.
An East Indian girl called first, then put me onto her ``supervisor``, also an East Indian man.
He was very pushy and insisted he was calling from Microsoft because they were getting too many error reports from my computer.
I eventually had to hang up on him, as he would not release the call when asked to do so. - Glenn| 9 repliesMy parents received a call from "Sylvester" at "The Repair Zone"
Said their computer was sending error reports and that it was in serious trouble.
My father said he'd look into it and call him back
Sylvester gave 403-456-3965 as the number to reach him.
Dad then called me and I did a bit of quick research - That number has been reported before. It's a scam.
I tried calling the number and got no answer - but when my father tried calling
he got someone there.
